College Football, Top 25 Review
Guys like Terry Bradshaw were getting like $100k/year from the NFLPA for video game proceeds or whatever, while guys like Sam Huff (also a HOF, by the way) and Herb Adderley (another HOF), got little to nothing. The NFLPA is reaping in MILLIONS of dollars using these guys likeness, but they are not seeing squat when compared to some other players. There are some retired players, who are not complaining, getting a lot of money from the NFLPA while there are others getting nothing. Couple that with what other sports do for their older, retired players and you'll see why many are bitter.
These guys aren't just bringing it up because Upshaw passed. The articles of the law suits have been everywhere for a long time, and the NFLPA still has done nothing in an era where they are bringing in more and more money. Guys are making millions EACH YEAR personally, and the NFLPA is making MILLIONS EACH YEAR too. Help the guys that helped make the league what it is today.
If he's untouchable, then send Bay to someone else. But the Pirates, after trading Nady, should be much more stingy with Bay.
You want him? Pay the piper.
The game has evolved, through the help of the umpires, into one where batters can crowd the plate and if a pitcher hits them both benches clear! The inside of the plate is still a strike. When batters know it won't be called a strike...they begin diving into pitches because they don't have to worry about the inside. By establishing that you'll go inside (i.e. Pedro in his prime), you anger the batters!
As I stated, I love the fact Joba is coming in on these guys. I don't love that he is going at their heads (if it was an accident UP, okay...but if the head was the target he should be fined and/or suspended). Problem is no one knows what he is thinking...and that is bad for batters too :)
As I've posted on previous boards, Marte brings up an interesting situation. You can say he isn't worth much, but in reality he is worth 2 possible 1st round picks! If the Pirates decline his option, he becomes a free agent. If he is signed (which he will be), the Pirates will get AT LEAST a sandwich pick. And depending on how high he is rated, he could be worth the other team's 1st AND a sandwich pick.
The fact that Bay and Nady don't NEED to be traded also raises their value. In previous years, the Pirates let themselves get to the point where they WON'T (not to be confused with can't - again we need to talk to ownership) resign them and their hand is forced. Huntington is doing his job - looking to obtain proper value for his players in the CURRENT market.
Bay is finally healthy. As stated above, he had a bad knee last season and played through it. He wasn't great, but was far better than anyone else the Pirates could have run out there.
Nady is actually healthy right now too! His value is as high as it has ever been, and as such parlay him into a prospect or two to build the farm system.
Marte - before you clowns blow up on me, hear this one out. If we do not trade him, we can either pick-up or opt-out of his final year. That would make him a free agent. He is a premier LH reliever. If we lose him in free agency, we get a sandwich pick (either end of the 1st, or end of the 3rd round). Now, that fact coupled with the fact his option is not very expensive for another year makes him quite the bit more valuable on the market. If you can't get a great trade for him, just keep him and pull in a draft pick!
MLB needs to 1.) supply reasons for all suspensions, with their reasoning documented. 2.) Disclose all fines to players and managers 3.) Disclose all reasons for reducing suspensions or fines.
I don't think it is right that they can do whatever they want without having to justify their actions. Baseball just hides behind a veil of secrecy. Owners don't have to disclose their profits, etc. We need the Freedom of Information Act to apply to baseball :D
Even better: let's ask management why the basically threatened the GM's job if he didn't move Ramirez (due to some tax that may have been put into place...that never was!). That just doesn't make it to the headlines!
I hope the Buccos move players BEFORE they are up against a deadline...and can get something for them!
Definately a good pick from the 2005 draft for the Steelers! Now they just need to use him more!
I guess this shows how much more the players care about themselves than thier teams.
Wouldn't it be interesting if this kid didn't sign...and the Pirates pull not only the #1 pick next year but also the #2a pick. They could re-pick the kid and have him be a SR in college, thus limited in his clout. Then they could select another stud at 2a!
GET RID OF MLB CONTRACTS TO AMATEURS! AND PUT ALL INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS INTO ANOTHER DRAFT! Yeah baby, rock out!
Great defense on the part of Detroit. If you had told me the Pens would have been shut out for the first 2 games of the finals...I would have not believed it. The young Pens appear to be outclassed on the ice right now. Unless they make some BIG adjustments on both ends of the ice they will be schooled for 2 more games.
I don't think you tell players that they cannot step out of the box more than once or that they cannot re-apply pine tar. Playing the game is what they do. What if a player stepped out once, looked for a sign and didn't get it, went to re-apply pine tar to ask the on-deck player or bench what he missed? It happens! What if you have the case with all those may flies or whatever...pitchers must work even faster? This game, unlike (apparently) Bud Selig's, requires concentration for periods of time. That is how they make their living.
All that will happen is the people that complain about ticket prices will complain even more ("I PAID THAT MUCH MONEY TO WATCH AN HOUR-AND-A-HALF GAME?!?!)
You play this game in front of millions of fans. If you stink, those fans will let you know. That is how it has been for years. Perhaps Soriano's ego is very fragile and the Cubs want to protect it. Whatever the case, he must reap what he sows.
The umpires have made three mistakes this week on home run balls. Perhaps they're angling on needing another few umpires (i.e. playoff/world series staffing) at the games, but the truth is they're screwing up calls. Baseball games take long enough as it is...if they are going to implement replay, they had better find the most efficient way to do so. I believe MLB needs to step in and ask the Umpires Association to see what the heck is going on. With 4 at each game, "We just screwed up" isn't a good enough answer.
