Posted Tuesday September 23, 2008, About: Gasol deal gets even better for Lakers
Really the only thing that can hold these Lakers back as they gain experience is if/when Bryant tries to turn the team into the Kobe Show. Right now they have all the pieces in place to win as a team, with Kobe as the focus, but not the only option. Will he be able to accept that? That's the key question.
Posted Tuesday September 23, 2008, About: Gasol deal gets even better for Lakers
Some absurd comments about Gasol here. First of all, not every player is going to be the best in every aspect of the game. If you expect Pau to be what he is not, you will always be disappointed. Try expecting Jason Kidd to hit Jumpers. Try expecting Shaq to hit free throws. Try expecting Garnett to be a number one option on offense. Try expecting Rasheed Wallace not to get technicals. Try expecting Nash to be a lock down defender. These players are all great, but if you expect them to do things they cannot do you will be disappointed.

Pau is a great finesse player, he brings great scoring, great passing, mediocre defense and better than average rebounding (check the stats on this one if you don't believe me) and some shot blocking. He hits his free throws. He is a team player (regardless of what King Felix believes, just check him out on the Spanish National Team - he's a great team player).

He's definitely not a franchise player (is Rudy Gay?), but he's close to it and he's an amazing second option. He's in a perfect position now, in the triangle, with Kobe on the wing. Now he's going to move to the high post when Bynum comes back and he's going to be even more effective on offense and defense. He is not a center, he's a PF, he was playing out of position last season. It was also his first deep run into the NBA playoffs, so he's never experienced the blatantly biased calls of the referees for home teams and he got frustrated. He does need to work on that aspect of his game, he needs to accept how the NBA playoffs work.

I hate the Lakers, always have, but I love Phil Jackson and I like Pau Gasol a lot. Most of their players had never been deep into the playoffs and they made it to the finals last year. They needed that experience. Kobe is no MJ and even MJ needed seasoned veterans of the NBA playoff wars by his side to win it all.

Posted Wednesday June 11, 2008, About: Karl won't rule out Carmelo trade
It would be a big mistake to deal Carmelo. They need to bring in a coach that can get this kid to realize his potential which, I assure you, is about as great as that of any player in the league. If they do trade him, I hope it's to the Bulls.
Posted Tuesday June 10, 2008, About: Mayo in the mix for second pick?
The knock on Lopez is that he doesn't rebound particularly well and that he doesn't seem to have an upside. True you can't teach height, but there's nothing more demoralizing to a franchise to draft a 7 ft stiff in the lottery (Duckworth, Reeves, Montross, etc.)

Although the the trade scenario with Memphis is interesting. I wouldn't put Marion at PF, he bitched about that for 4 years in Phoenix. Let him be a slightly above average SF and keep Haslem at the 4 for defense. Miller could be a 6th man.
Posted Wednesday June 04, 2008, About: Van Gundy predicts Lakers dynasty
Talking about a dynasty now is just media hype, why get all hot and bothered about it one way or the other?

What's exciting is that the Lakers are going to be very good for the next few years and so is New Orleans, Portland, Utah and maybe Denver and Golden State can get it together. It's going to be fun watching those teams go at each other over the next half decade!

Thanks for the explanation pezee. I had no idea it was based on something so sleazy, I think I've actually seen it used in American "soccer" publications, so maybe you need to write some clueless American sportswriters...!

By the way, I agree that Messi is right there with Ronaldo in talent , but I have a sinking feeling that he is going to be injured as often as not. And if Ronaldo does go to Spain the only place for him will be RM, where he will fit right in with his talent and his attitude!
Posted Tuesday May 27, 2008, About: Barca nixed Henry move to United
Thanks for the replies Man U, uh, Man Un, manchester untied, I mean, you guys in red who won a lot this year.

I live in Spain, so I don't watch Premiership football very often. I thought in the away leg of the semi against Bar??a, he looked like a petulant brat on the pitch. Believe me, I'm used to immature behavior in La Liga, but he was spectacularly childish during that match. This was after he blew a penalty, so as you can imagine I came away with a lot of negative images. If he was worse before, all I can say, is Dear God!

Hopefully, he'll keep maturing, and if not, I pray that Real Madrid won't sign him so I don't have to see his pissy face every day!

Sorry to be so hard on your star, congrats again.
Posted Tuesday May 27, 2008, About: Barca nixed Henry move to United
Congrats to Man U fans for winning the double, but I have to ask: does winning championships make up for having a superstar as obnoxious as Ronaldo? I mean he pretty much represents everything that traditional English Football fans despise. I'm not disputing his skills, which are undeniable, its everything else that I question (his attitude, his sense, or lack, of fair play, his selfishness, his lack of camaraderie, etc. etc.). He's a great player no doubt, but are you really pleased to have him wearing a Man U jersey?

Oh, and the article is stupid.
Posted Monday May 19, 2008, About: Horry defends pick on West
It's sad to see a once great player reduced to being a thug on the court. West has been absolutely abusing him on offense and Horry has been able to contribute nothing to the Spurs cause last playoffs or these playoffs, except for two cheap shots on the opposing team's star players. Too bad his career is going to be forever sullied by what he's become.

He should have retired two seasons ago.
Posted Saturday May 17, 2008, About: Why Raps should trade Calderon
Let's see, where to start. TJ is an amazing scorer and if he had the mindset he could be a decent assist man. The problem is that he doesn't have that mindset. He is a selfish scorer who puts himself before the team. This is always bad, but it's a disaster when it's your PG, who has the ball in his hands on every play. (Think Stephon Marbury or Steve Francis). This type of PG puts up good numbers but destroys team chemistry, which is far more important than anything else.

Calderon, is a good scorer who picks his spots, a GREAT assist-ratio PG (perhaps even the best last season), a great decision maker and has a very positive team-oriented attitude. To the poster who said he would suffer as the starting PG. Well he was the starting PG last season for a long stretch, and many thought that he should have made the all-star team! His play suffered when TJ came back and started to be a cancer to the team. You see team chemistry is important.

Unfortunately, after last season TJ's trade value has to be close to zero (but they should still pull off that LeBron for TJ trade!). His injury problems and his shockingly bad attitude can't have made a good impression on GMs across the league. So what do you do? Trade a potential all-star, team player and get something of value or do you release or trade TJ for peanuts? I dunno, I think getting rid of TJ may be addition by subtraction. It certainly will make for a more pleasant locker room.

As far as that "cultural fit" angle - the writer knows absolutely nothing about Latin American and European culture. Let's leave it at that.
Posted Saturday May 17, 2008, About: Why Raps should trade Calderon
"Will everyone forget the TJ-for-Melo trade ideas?!? If you were Denver, would you make that trade? "

They trade TJ for LeBron James, straight up, now that would be a great trade. Why don't they do that?

Posted Saturday May 10, 2008, About: Carvalho: Ronaldo may wilt
Granted that Ronaldo is the greatest talent in the world right now, but his personal psychology is that of a whiny 2 year old brat. I suspect that he will react to the pressure by spending a lot of time diving and having embarrassing mini-tantrums on the pitch when he doesn't get the call (or missing the penalty when he does) just as he did against Barcelona.

It's a shame that he isn't mature, what a player he would be!
Posted Saturday May 10, 2008, About: Calderon wants starting PG job
The nuggets would be foolish to trade Nene for TJ. Camby and Martin are on the downside of their careers and the Nuggets already have two high volume shooters in Iverson and Anthony - with JR Smith ready to take over Iverson's spot in a season or so. TJ would be a disaster on a team that really needs a steadying hand, like Calderon for instance, or Andre Miller!

"[TJ] a bit of a chip on his shoulder regarding his starting position."

To the poster who said this: saying that TJ has a bit of a chip on his shoulder regarding his starting position is like saying George Bush "had a bit of a chip on his shoulder" regarding Iraq. TJ is a great talent, but he is poison for team chemistry not only for his selfish attitude (can anyone say Stephon Marbury?), but also because he is injury prone. They need to trade him and keep Calderon.

Kaycee: who compared Calderon to Magic? He's more Maurice Cheeks (which is saying something) a guy that can run your team like a true professional and put up all-star level stats.

The sign was the Bee (for Bloods) sign that they use in his hometown of Inglewood. He flashed it because Horford was disrespecting him while Pierce was on the ground - something you don't do to a Blood apparently.
Posted Thursday May 01, 2008, About: Bulls want to talk to Avery
SoFlaBoy: The Bulls have more talent than the Mavericks? Um, no, not by a longshot. The Bulls do not have a single legitimate star. The Mavs have the reigning MVP, Kidd (diminished but still a top tier PG), Josh Howard (bad playoffs, but still a great player), Jason Terry. Even Stackhouse is better than anything the Bulls have.
Posted Wednesday April 30, 2008, About: Spanish midfielder eyes MLS gig
I remember when Mendieta was starring for Valencia and the Spanish National Team, he was sick, sick, sick. He only ever scored "golazos" (incredibly difficult goals), never any gimmies. He also had ice-water in his veins. He was the number 1 option for penalty kicks on every team he ever played on before he went to England. He would make them with his eyes closed, never missed. I'm sad to see that injuries have slowed him down.
Posted Tuesday April 29, 2008, About: Will Ford return to Raptors?
He should go. I have to believe that he lost the respect of most, if not all, of the team by his late season pouting. Remember before Ford came back from injury Calderon was playing great, almost at an all-star level, and the team was playing well. Then Ford poisoned the well, the team went south, Calderon went south, their season was done. Even after Jose nobly asked to be put on the bench to try and salvage the season. How could you have faith in a self-serving jerk like Ford again?

I wonder if this was an issue before the injury as well, I remember being surprised that nobody rushed to Ford's defense when he was flagrantly fouled by that player on Atlanta. Are they all soft or do they just not like TJ?

Hard to compare Hierro and Ramos as they are two completely different styles. Hierro was a precision passer and spot kicker, Ramos is a force of nature, speedy and strong as an ox.
