I think it might be because they've been so dominant in the regular season that they don't have enough motivation left. Then when they get to the playoffs they actually have to get motivated, which apparently isn't much for them.

Yup, I agree. Personally, I love the occasional non-fighter fights, ala Stamkos and Zherdev, but that's just me. But yeah, fights are fights and there's no denying it. Although Bettman probably is in denial, but heck he always is.
