Yes, you are correct, generally the best backs don't influence the game as much as the best wide-mids/wingers (you say center-mid, but I don't think that's what you mean). There are those rare one's like Dani Alves though that can change the dimension of the attack with their forward movement. Maicon is that type of player. Unfortunately, Sergio Ramos is probably the third-best at doing this in the world. Too bad Maicon is #1. In Dani Alves' case, it was his game I feel that let Messi do his best work. Ribery and Maicon play on different wings so this would be a little harder. I ramble, but further thoughts: Ribery changes a game more than Maicon, however Maicon would be a better-fit for Real Madrid if they slide Sergio Ramos to CB (bench Pepe) or convert one of them to LB. Real Madrid has already 2 of the best wingers in the world and an abundance of other attacking mids.

He had a remarkable February from what I remember, with superb showings but then was removed from the starting XI for Higuain and Raul to keep playing together. Basically a flop of a transfer from KJH's standpoint I would say.

Hey some of you are commenting on why would they ever sign an American? If you read the full "rumor" on goal.comit states that it would be to expand the Real Madrid brand into the USA. With La Liga moving into ESPN (partially) it does make at least some business sense. I think Gooch has the best chance of any American to cracking into Real Madrid, though it may be as 3rd or 4th string CB. Well him or Mastroeni.
