Put things into perspective...in 2013, the Canadian Football League will have a $4.4M salary cap for a roster of 53 players ($83K average salary). They play 2 preseason and 18 regular season games.

Don't worry, Colin, I doubt Bettman is a beer swilling type of guy.

I am from Regina where Josh was born and raised. My niece went to high school with Josh and remained in touch with him once he hit the big time. She said he is still the same down to earth guy she grew up with, except he now wears more expensive clothes! The age old question..."why is it always the good ones?". Stand tall, Josh.

I miss hockey and sitting in the arena (I attend about 5 games/year). At this point I'm almost willing to shell out some dollars just to watch the Ice Girls skate around cleaning the ice.

I wonder how popular Harry Colon was in the locker room during his NFL career.

I also wonder if all the NHL players are going to dress up as Bettman and all the owners are going to dress up as Fehr for Halloween. What else would be scarier to each side?

Finally, I wonder why President Obama hasn't locked "y'all" up at Camp David to settle this dispute once and for all.

Foil, you've brought up two points. Firstly, let the athlete be human...enjoying supper in a restaurant with family. Koivu may have been a quiet leader, but he certainly was a great captain. He never went seeking to have his tires pumped. Secondly, the language issue. In the dozen or so times I've been to Quebec (I'm from Saskatchewan), I've have blank stares given to me when I speak English. This even happened once at McDonalds...a Big Mac is still pronounced "Le Big Mac" in French. I chaulk it up to the arrogance of some. My point is this...celebrities get hounded in any city, but only in Quebec do athletes also have to deal with the language issue. Why would Doan want to put up with this?

"The Habs refuse to over pay?".

Ya, Gomez was a steal.

Subban has yet to reach his prime. He has lots of potential if he can mature a bit more and cut the childish antics from his game. Locking him up long term now could be a true steal in the future for the Habs.

Doesn't it take 25+ years for port to age until it is truly worthy of being consumed? If so, then that is a long time to wait. Then again, Leafs fans have waited longer than that and they'll continue to wait while the Irkmister is still around.

I'm surprised Rogers Communications hasn't offered to broker the trade to get Bobby Lou in Toronto. Imagine having him doing 82 regular season games between the pipes and then being a TV analyst on SportsNet throughout the entire playoffs...all under one contract.

It seems like some players have a total lack of respect for their opponents. The NHLPA has to step in at some point to say, "If we keep this stuff up, then we'll all be out of a job!". The NHL has to crack down hard as well, regardless if the player got injured or if the offending player is a superstar.

I disagree with players saying they don't know what is a penalty or what could lead to a suspension by Shanny. They know the rules, so they should know what to expect. If I speed today and don't get caught, does it mean I can always speed and not have to worry? I wish!

I think every hockey player take liberties while the play is on. They all slash, punch, hold, hook, trip, and all the "little things" to some extent, so I guess all players are therefore "dirty". However, to cross check someone in the back after the whistle when they are nearly at the bench is totally different. Then for Berube to say he has no problem with Schenn doing this, while complaining about Crosby doing "little things" only proves Berube is an idiot.

Schenn was going to get a penalty for his cheap shot on Crosby, but no penalty was given because the "play" wouldn't have occurred because video replay determined that about 10 seconds earlier, a goal was scored. Ok, so Schenn wouldn't have been able to get a cross-checking penalty, but why not an unsportsmanlike penalty? I detest Pierre Maguire's comments afterwards...something to the effect that Philly wants Schenn to be that gritty player. Gritty is different than a cheap shot artist.

Asham's hit on Briere was totally clean. I do not understand why over the past few years that a clean hit starts a line brawl. Ya, it was on a star player, but then what is the star player doing on the ice in a 6-4 game with a minute left when his team is winning against a team he's going to see in the playoffs? Laviolette should have had Briere glued to the bench. A good coach does not put his star players in bad situations.
