Imagine that... A hockey player with personality... Surely Bettman will suspend him. This kind of public show of personality should not be tolerated!!!

Man, you've got to get over it... Not all southern franchises are the duds that Atlanta and Nashville are. And besides, there are lots of hockey fans down here who love having a local team to root for. Quit being a hockey snob/elitist and share a little bit.

BTW, they wouldn't be in the south if there wasn't some reason they couldn't cut it in the north (Winnepeg, Hartford, Minnesota, Quebec...). I'm a big fan of more teams in Canada (as that's a guaranteed money-maker) and I'm defintely a fan of contracting/moving teams that show no effort towards embedding the sport in their area of effect (Tampa, Nashville, Phoenix...), but Dallas wouldn't fall into either of those categories.

That being said, Dallas just looks exhausted and overmatched. Too many high-impact players are out for too long and Marty just can't carry the load for everyone anymore. He needs a break whether he wants one or not. Modano's a checking-line center whether he wants to admit it or not. Morrison is an attempt to look like we did something at the deadline. I expect him to be gone when his contract expires in July.

I totally agree with you about the "flash in the pan" markets. That's why I think there are a lot of factors that have to be considered before even considering a potential market (i.e. lasting ownership, financial stability, grass-roots implementation, television coverage, earning potential, competitiveness, etc.) ??? wonder if the NHL even thought about any of those things... Most of the locations you are citing definitely failed at many, if not all, of those. That's where admitting you made a mistake and contracting or relocating would be ideal (um, Bettman?). I agree that Dallas seems to be an anomaly where this subject is concerned. Thank goodness! As a native Texan who is a passionate hockey fan (almost any hockey - except Detroit), I don't know where I'd be if I didn't have a local team to cheer for. So, I guess I'm glad you didn't have it your way or I'd be screwed! And if you see my ancestors among your Scottish brethren, tell them hello!

You fell into a stereotypical definition of "yankee" when you raised all of the northern franchises (including extinct ones) above all southern NHL franchises simply by their location. It's the willingness of the franchise and its owner(s) to make the franchise successful that makes all the difference, not the geography. I agree that Bettman needs to take a hike and that he failed miserably by allowing some of these franchises to exist. And it's not merely his trying, which can be applauded, but it's his refusal to admit mistakes and attempt to justify them by making more. You, however, have redeemed yourself and I gladly claim you as a fellow American by offering apologies and being willing to accept the point that was made. ;) And I withdraw the previous stereotype.

I am so tired of all the yankees lumping Dallas in with Nashville and Tampa. The Dallas Stars have been one of the most successful franchises in the league since they moved to Texas. The Stars organization is heralded as having one of the most successful grass-roots movements in the league with local kids already being drafted within the last few years. Screw NASCAR and bass-fishing and quit being such an uptight and elitist fool. Dog Tampa and Nashville if you want (it's warranted), but do your homework before you start spouting stupidity.
