Obviously, Alabama has had a pretty bad 15 years in terms of run-ins with the NCAA, but it was clean for the vast majority of its history. And to be fair, while Alabama was guilty of committing the infractions it has been punished for recently, the double-standard that the NCAA has used when prosecuting/punishing Alabama versus most schools around the league is simply staggering.
And Hatcher hasn't always been garbage. He's a huge reason why the Stars won the cup in '99. I agree that he's sucked ever since he blew out his knee in Detroit (and the severe calf injury the year before in Dallas didn't help either), but for a few years he was arguabley the best defensive defenseman in the league. I know it was a thing of beauty to watch him and Matvichuck absolutely smother Peter Forsberg in those two Western Conference Finals against the Avs.
But then he gets a couple leg injuries which make him even less mobile, and the league transitions more to an open-skating, obstruction-less game, and players like Hatcher really don't have a place anymore.
Part of it is that since there's little consequence when a goon cheap shots somebody (the goon gets suspended a little while and the team might have to kill off one power play... that's it), there's very little reason not to have someone take a run at the other teams star player and potentially take him out of the game/season.
And I don't see how removing the instigator would curtail that. Yeah, that goon gets a few punches to the noggin when he finally gets back on the ice again, but most goons are willing to do that anyway.
What would get rid of those goons is if it was a disadvantage to have them on your roster. If teams suffered when their players delivered dirty hits, then the roster spots for those types of players would dry up real fast.
Cheap shots do need to stop, but I think it would be much better to punish them more severely. And not just stiffer suspensions for the guilty player (although that is also an important part), but actually start making teams pay a price for icing a player that attempts to injure others. Perhaps much stiffer on-ice penalties (longer power-play, maybe a penalty shot, something so that there is a definite competitive disadvantage to having a player take a cheap shot). Throw in some off-ice punishment (fines, suspensions for coaches, etc.), and I think that would go a long way towards curtailing blatantly dirty hits.
When the worst that happens is you lose a goon for half a dozen games and you get a couple minutes shorthanded, there's not a whole lot of motivation to make sure your players play within the rules. Once the teams actually start paying a price for dirty hits, the coaches and GMs will make sure they occur less frequently.
That said, I don't think there's much doubt that Rodriguez will eventually install the offense he's had so much success with at WVU during his tenure at Michigan, and QBs like Mallett certainly don't fit into those longer term plans. I wouldn't be surprised if Mallett did opt to go elsewhere, especially if he has designs on being a big-time pro prospect in 3 years.
I agree with Captain Sunshine. SMU will get back to being a quality program, but I don't see Jones leaving Hawaii. If he's going to leave Hawaii, he's probably earned himself a gig that is at least a step up.
Also, very mature on the insults. It's good to know that we can have such a high level of discourse.
Turco has won a playoff series, so shutup.
Turco is having no problems holding off Smith for the starting job. There's nothing that says a coach can't ride the hot hand for a while, but when everything is on the table, Turco is easily the Stars' number 1.
It's a freakin' joke. Calm down. And I think it's a valid point too. Goalie pads are ridiculous. I'm not going to whine about specific goalies, since they are operating within the rules (for the most part), but I will whine about the rules themselves.
Although if the dude is 6-7 and 303 lbs. as a sophomore in high school, I can see why you would. Damn.
I just think he's got too much off the field baggage to hand him the reins of a multi-million dollar football program. It's a coaching hire that almost guarantees instants NCAA scrutiny for your program.
The only downside is that if he has success there, he jumps for greener pastures at his first opportunity. Of course, with what's happened in his past, greener pastures might not come along. That and SMU is a WEALTHY school, so if he turned that program around, SMU would be willing to fork over cash to keep him there.
Granted, Coker is probably the last coach I would want on the list of coaches to have that distinction, but it's still funny.
There are any number of reasons a recruit choses a school and then even more as to why he changes his mind.
And you can throw out average and mediocre all you want, a competitive program with pretty decent tradition in a BCS conference is still a huge step above Troy.
And by the way, Georgia Tech is a quality program in a BCS conference. Troy is niether of those things. I don't find the situations all that comparable.
Alabama got a very good coach
LSU kept a very good coach
Can't we all just get along?
