Actually, Auburn has had more major infractions than the University of Alabama. If I remember correctly, Arizona State and SMU are tied for the most.

Obviously, Alabama has had a pretty bad 15 years in terms of run-ins with the NCAA, but it was clean for the vast majority of its history. And to be fair, while Alabama was guilty of committing the infractions it has been punished for recently, the double-standard that the NCAA has used when prosecuting/punishing Alabama versus most schools around the league is simply staggering.
Posted Monday January 07, 2008, About: Flyer out with spinal cord injury
It was a great open ice hit up until Hatcher carried through into Lupul. Just bad luck all around.

And Hatcher hasn't always been garbage. He's a huge reason why the Stars won the cup in '99. I agree that he's sucked ever since he blew out his knee in Detroit (and the severe calf injury the year before in Dallas didn't help either), but for a few years he was arguabley the best defensive defenseman in the league. I know it was a thing of beauty to watch him and Matvichuck absolutely smother Peter Forsberg in those two Western Conference Finals against the Avs.

But then he gets a couple leg injuries which make him even less mobile, and the league transitions more to an open-skating, obstruction-less game, and players like Hatcher really don't have a place anymore.
Posted Thursday December 27, 2007, About: GMs may modify instigator rule
Part of it is an "arms race." If one team has a goon, then the other team needs a goon to keep the other one in check.

Part of it is that since there's little consequence when a goon cheap shots somebody (the goon gets suspended a little while and the team might have to kill off one power play... that's it), there's very little reason not to have someone take a run at the other teams star player and potentially take him out of the game/season.

And I don't see how removing the instigator would curtail that. Yeah, that goon gets a few punches to the noggin when he finally gets back on the ice again, but most goons are willing to do that anyway.
Posted Thursday December 27, 2007, About: GMs may modify instigator rule
Honestly I think the skill level is fine. The guys you list don't make rosters because there aren't enough skilled players to take their spots, they make rosters because, to be frank, in the NHL it pays to have a goon on your squad somewhere. Some teams are a little classier and just go with the "tough guy," that'll only start fair fights. Some teams don't and we end up with players that routinely take cheap shots at others.

What would get rid of those goons is if it was a disadvantage to have them on your roster. If teams suffered when their players delivered dirty hits, then the roster spots for those types of players would dry up real fast.
Posted Thursday December 27, 2007, About: GMs may modify instigator rule
I think it's a bad move to try to end cheap shots by making legal (or at least less punishable) what are essentially more cheapshots.

Cheap shots do need to stop, but I think it would be much better to punish them more severely. And not just stiffer suspensions for the guilty player (although that is also an important part), but actually start making teams pay a price for icing a player that attempts to injure others. Perhaps much stiffer on-ice penalties (longer power-play, maybe a penalty shot, something so that there is a definite competitive disadvantage to having a player take a cheap shot). Throw in some off-ice punishment (fines, suspensions for coaches, etc.), and I think that would go a long way towards curtailing blatantly dirty hits.

When the worst that happens is you lose a goon for half a dozen games and you get a couple minutes shorthanded, there's not a whole lot of motivation to make sure your players play within the rules. Once the teams actually start paying a price for dirty hits, the coaches and GMs will make sure they occur less frequently.
Posted Thursday December 27, 2007, About: Will Michigan's Mallett transfer?
Rodriguez originally ran a much more traditional, pass-oriented spread offense when he was an OC. He's a good enough coach that he can adapt his offense to fit the talent at hand. If Mallett stays, I'm sure Rodriguez will utilize him well (lots of throwing, none of that option stuff).

That said, I don't think there's much doubt that Rodriguez will eventually install the offense he's had so much success with at WVU during his tenure at Michigan, and QBs like Mallett certainly don't fit into those longer term plans. I wouldn't be surprised if Mallett did opt to go elsewhere, especially if he has designs on being a big-time pro prospect in 3 years.

SMU's got the cash to pay a top coach, and as long as that coach can recruit against the big boys, they are sitting on a recruiting goldmine.

I agree with Captain Sunshine. SMU will get back to being a quality program, but I don't see Jones leaving Hawaii. If he's going to leave Hawaii, he's probably earned himself a gig that is at least a step up.
Posted Friday December 21, 2007, About: Stars goalies take jab at Luongo
He didn't confirm anything. He was merely pointing out that the two goalies are a lot more comparable than you, and others, are making them out to be. I haven't even seen anyone try to claim that Turco is better. I know I don't think that. But Turco is on the same level as the elite goalies in the league right now.

Also, very mature on the insults. It's good to know that we can have such a high level of discourse.
Posted Friday December 21, 2007, About: Stars goalies take jab at Luongo
A few points:

Turco has won a playoff series, so shutup.

Turco is having no problems holding off Smith for the starting job. There's nothing that says a coach can't ride the hot hand for a while, but when everything is on the table, Turco is easily the Stars' number 1.

It's a freakin' joke. Calm down. And I think it's a valid point too. Goalie pads are ridiculous. I'm not going to whine about specific goalies, since they are operating within the rules (for the most part), but I will whine about the rules themselves.

Get 'em young, eh?

Although if the dude is 6-7 and 303 lbs. as a sophomore in high school, I can see why you would. Damn.
Posted Wednesday December 19, 2007, About: What will NHL do to Simon?
They really do. This is Simon's 8th suspension and he has now been the primary offender in two of the three worst on-ice incidents in the past several years. He's out there trying to injure people. There's no need for that type of player in the game.
Posted Wednesday December 19, 2007, About: What will NHL do to Simon?
Throw him out of the league.
Posted Wednesday December 19, 2007, About: Front-runner in UCLA search
So I guess the thinking for UCLA is that USC is getting their stud recruits via some shady dealings, so they have to keep up. Neuheisel may be a good coach, but he doesn't some much pay attention when it comes to the rules.

I just think he's got too much off the field baggage to hand him the reins of a multi-million dollar football program. It's a coaching hire that almost guarantees instants NCAA scrutiny for your program.
Posted Wednesday December 19, 2007, About: Franchione interested in SMU job
This actually might not be a bad hire for SMU. He's a pretty decent football coach, especially for a smaller program (he did wonders for TCU). He obviously knows the area well and can recruit there. You gotta figure he's learned his lesson with the whole VIP page thing.

The only downside is that if he has success there, he jumps for greener pastures at his first opportunity. Of course, with what's happened in his past, greener pastures might not come along. That and SMU is a WEALTHY school, so if he turned that program around, SMU would be willing to fork over cash to keep him there.
Posted Tuesday December 18, 2007, About: Report: Coker on SMU's list
Heh... who else would've predicted that SMU would hire a coach that won a national title in this decade?

Granted, Coker is probably the last coach I would want on the list of coaches to have that distinction, but it's still funny.
Posted Tuesday December 18, 2007, About: Alabama moves in on Tech recruit
He's ranked a 4-star prospect by Scout, which is one of the most widely respected recruiting services. And who's to say that he wasn't a Georgia Tech fan growing up, and that's why he initially committed there, but upon Tech hiring an option guru, he know he has no real shot to be a big-time player as a wide reciever in that situation so he started looking elsewhere?

There are any number of reasons a recruit choses a school and then even more as to why he changes his mind.

And you can throw out average and mediocre all you want, a competitive program with pretty decent tradition in a BCS conference is still a huge step above Troy.
Posted Tuesday December 18, 2007, About: Alabama moves in on Tech recruit
If the recruit from Troy were a 4-star prospect and ranked as one of the best recievers in the South, then I'd hope Auburn fans would be fired up too.

And by the way, Georgia Tech is a quality program in a BCS conference. Troy is niether of those things. I don't find the situations all that comparable.
Posted Tuesday December 18, 2007, About: Rodriguez making changes at UM
Arguing about academics as it pertains to football is stupid. Argue all you want as it relates to regular (i.e. non-football/basketball playing) stuents, but when it comes down to it, if the dude can tote the rock and is smart enough to meet NCAA qualifications (which aren't high at all), he'll find his way on to a football field at any school (or at least at any major college program).
Posted Tuesday December 18, 2007, About: Rodriguez making changes at UM
Michigan got a very good coach

Alabama got a very good coach

LSU kept a very good coach

Can't we all just get along?
Posted Tuesday December 18, 2007, About: Alabama moves in on Tech recruit
Actually, it's official now. He's signed a letter of intent to play for Bama (he's elegible for early enrollment). Now just add Julio Jones and this is one of the best WR recruiting classes ever.

Posted Tuesday December 18, 2007, About: Bowden interested in WVU job
I wasn't saying WVU was a better program, there's no doubt that Auburn has been a better program for a lot longer. I was just saying that Auburn wasn't all that great of a job back then as it has been for the past decade.
