Also, I think that if Tavares did end up in Long Island maybe it could be the last piece to get the Islanders out of obscurity in NY. As Long as Garth doesn't channel an inner-Mike Milbury and trade away all of the franchise pieces for nothing, the team can go places. Tavares could be seen as the piece that got them back to being relevant like they once were in the 80s, something that Okposo and Bailey have started and Tavares can help complete.
I think the Hurricanes should go after Antropov as they could use another big body up front. I think having a line along the lines of Ruutu-Eric Staal-Antropov would be amazing. The Hurricanes could trade Brett Carson (pretty good up and coming defenseman in their system) and their second round pick for him. I think that'd work pretty good. Also Antropov would be out of the spotlight here in Carolina and can just focus on the game. I think that's why a lot of players who come from higher demanding markets do better here.
I think if I were Gaborik, I'd play hardball, if you want me, then Jacques' style has to change. He needs the lack of trap system, much like the 'Canes run as it would be very exciting hockey. If the 'Canes do pull the trade that's been rumored in Raleigh, then you'd have Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, Staal, Gaborik, Lecavlier, Stamkos and so forth in the Southeast. We'd lack defense obviously, but it would be the most exciting offensive division (though I think it was last year too).
And Bostongm, you're right, if Ward wasn't inconsistent, the 'Canes make the playoffs. If he could return to the playoff run status, the Canes would be pretty set on taking the Southeast crown again and returning to the playoffs after a 2 year hiatus. Also if Gaborik lands on the 'Canes they'll get more than the 1 national TV game they have..
Jim Rutherford has pulled off some great trades in the past (Pitkanen is one that will be seen this season if it works or not), but the Corvo trade worked wonders last year. I think if the 'Canes had Gaborik they'd definently contend with the Caps for the Southeast Division, also Theodore is weak against the 'Canes so that too will give them an edge.
Thank god real news will be coming back soon once preseason and the regular season start in the next month and a half.
Of course this is all speculation at this point though. So who knows. I think it'd be pretty cool to have Gaborik in Raleigh though. If the 'Canes score more and get back to the playoffs by not being injured, they'd be a successful franchise again. They've been posting profits, but not huge ones, once the playoffs are made again, they'll be profiting again, and Gaborik is the type of player that can do that. He plays fast, and that is Carolina's style. Gosh I'd love to have him on our team, he's been wasting away in Lemaire's system.
I think the Leafs need to move on. They should pull a Dan Boyle like move on McCabe if they want to get rid of his salary if he refuses to waive the NTC. The only way they should keep him is if Schenn will be mentored and rooming with him, that's the only way I can justify keeping him.
Prior to Bettman, were these ever even around? I wish he'd go back to the hole in the ground he came from.
The only thing I can say about Wallin is that he does have 3 Stanley Cup Playoff OT winners (2 in 2002 and 1 in 06), I don't think Lidstrom has that many, so that's pretty funny.
