Isleman, the draft pick they got from Ottawa was not their first rounder, but San Jose's I believe. Sorry to burst your bubble on that one. Ottawa did not trade their own first rounder but one that will be in the high 20s.

Also, I think that if Tavares did end up in Long Island maybe it could be the last piece to get the Islanders out of obscurity in NY. As Long as Garth doesn't channel an inner-Mike Milbury and trade away all of the franchise pieces for nothing, the team can go places. Tavares could be seen as the piece that got them back to being relevant like they once were in the 80s, something that Okposo and Bailey have started and Tavares can help complete.
Posted Friday January 23, 2009, About: Antropov tops Leafs trade scenarios
The only problem with the Staal and Esposito trade is that Esposito was traded last deadline to Atlanta.

I think the Hurricanes should go after Antropov as they could use another big body up front. I think having a line along the lines of Ruutu-Eric Staal-Antropov would be amazing. The Hurricanes could trade Brett Carson (pretty good up and coming defenseman in their system) and their second round pick for him. I think that'd work pretty good. Also Antropov would be out of the spotlight here in Carolina and can just focus on the game. I think that's why a lot of players who come from higher demanding markets do better here.
Posted Tuesday August 19, 2008, About: Wild won't rule out Gaborik trade
The NHL would be a lot better off without Bettman, I'd take anyone over him, even George W. Sometimes T&R does get great photos of the midget, ones where he looks all powerful (so he thinks) and others where he has that great weasel smirk of his.

I think if I were Gaborik, I'd play hardball, if you want me, then Jacques' style has to change. He needs the lack of trap system, much like the 'Canes run as it would be very exciting hockey. If the 'Canes do pull the trade that's been rumored in Raleigh, then you'd have Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, Staal, Gaborik, Lecavlier, Stamkos and so forth in the Southeast. We'd lack defense obviously, but it would be the most exciting offensive division (though I think it was last year too).

And Bostongm, you're right, if Ward wasn't inconsistent, the 'Canes make the playoffs. If he could return to the playoff run status, the Canes would be pretty set on taking the Southeast crown again and returning to the playoffs after a 2 year hiatus. Also if Gaborik lands on the 'Canes they'll get more than the 1 national TV game they have..
Posted Tuesday August 19, 2008, About: Wild won't rule out Gaborik trade
Like I said a few weeks back, the Hurricanes have shown some interest in Gaborik. I think it was along the lines of Justin Williams, Frank Kaberle, a prospect (I think it was Nick Dodge) and a conditional draft pick if he signs with the 'Canes for an extension. The 'Canes play a more up-tempo style and he would fit in great alongside Staal.

Jim Rutherford has pulled off some great trades in the past (Pitkanen is one that will be seen this season if it works or not), but the Corvo trade worked wonders last year. I think if the 'Canes had Gaborik they'd definently contend with the Caps for the Southeast Division, also Theodore is weak against the 'Canes so that too will give them an edge.

Thank god real news will be coming back soon once preseason and the regular season start in the next month and a half.

This is very true. However, the 'Canes have a self-imposed salary cap of around 45 million by Peter Karmanos. If he spent the money on Staal's extension and got Gaborik for that price, we'd still be under the cap by about 4-5 million. So it'll be interesting. I don't know if I'd trade Williams though, I'd much rather prefer Whitney than Williams as he's still getting better.

Of course this is all speculation at this point though. So who knows. I think it'd be pretty cool to have Gaborik in Raleigh though. If the 'Canes score more and get back to the playoffs by not being injured, they'd be a successful franchise again. They've been posting profits, but not huge ones, once the playoffs are made again, they'll be profiting again, and Gaborik is the type of player that can do that. He plays fast, and that is Carolina's style. Gosh I'd love to have him on our team, he's been wasting away in Lemaire's system.
Posted Monday August 11, 2008, About: Wild seeks Gaborik extension
There have been rumors that the Hurricanes want Gaborik. The trade would be something along the lines of Justin Williams, Frank Kaberle and one our of Prospects. I don't know if the Wild would go for this, but it would be interesting to have Gaborik with Staal, that'd be a pretty lethal combination. Only problem is that the 'Canes next year would have to resign both Gaborik and Staal, which would get into the situation a lot of teams are getting into and committing 40% of the Salary Cap to 2 players.
Posted Friday July 25, 2008, About: Baltimore's chances for NHL team
Why does everyone bring Carolina into this, they're posting profits now. Why not get rid of the Islanders as they have basically the worst operated team in the league and I'd gladly get rid of Atlanta and the Panthers in South Florida. With how close Baltimore is to Washington D.C., maybe the NHL could do a few test run games with the Caps to see if they'd support it or blow it of. The Hurricanes are turning it around and the Lightning have a pretty strong fan base, so those are probably the only two teams in the South East at the moment that don't need anything, so stop dragging them in this conversation when you're in Phoenix who has more trouble if I recall than the Hurricanes.

They missed out on Emery if they lose him as he just went to Russia. I think Leclaire is far more important than Peca and need to lock him up long term.
Posted Wednesday July 09, 2008, About: Leafs save money for Sundin
I don't see what would be so bad about going to Vancouver. Yeah you're going to finish in the bottom of the division probably, but you will get paid. I mean I know glory is great and all, but I would take 10 million a year and deal with it.

I think the Leafs need to move on. They should pull a Dan Boyle like move on McCabe if they want to get rid of his salary if he refuses to waive the NTC. The only way they should keep him is if Schenn will be mentored and rooming with him, that's the only way I can justify keeping him.

Prior to Bettman, were these ever even around? I wish he'd go back to the hole in the ground he came from.
Posted Wednesday July 09, 2008, About: Hurricanes to trade defenseman
Wallin refuses to waive his NTC, which was given to him for some ridiculous reason, but aren't they all? Kaberle is probably the better of the two and I hate to see him go after finally starting to turn it around once Corvo came as he was almost back to the 2005-2006 status. At 2.2 million for this year he is a bargain when you consider what Finger is getting and other players on defense this year. I think the 'Canes only need draft pick(s) or a mid-level prospect. Though there are plenty of defense hungry teams out there, so maybe we can find a suitor to over pay us. I think Wallin should be waived, he's too prone to errors and then he can fly back to Sweden to play as he takes too many costly penalties and his defense was never good.

The only thing I can say about Wallin is that he does have 3 Stanley Cup Playoff OT winners (2 in 2002 and 1 in 06), I don't think Lidstrom has that many, so that's pretty funny.
Posted Monday May 12, 2008, About: Coburn possible for Game 3
Phlyfan36 is just a disgrace to the Philly school system. It's you're not your for what you're saying. But that aside, I think the Flyers will win Game 3, I think they're clawing their way back into it and will make it a series. The Downey error was an unfortunate happening and I felt terrible for him. The Flyers problem right now is that they're not crashing the net when they need to. Make Fleury feel uncomfortable, it is the only way they'll come back.
