Hmmm... Canada's sport? heck there is only one Canadian in the top NHL performers. Heck two are from U.S..... It's a world sport. About time it needs to be treated that way. Not a fan of Bettman's but exposing it to as many people as possible is the way to grow it.
Posted Wednesday November 18, 2009, About: Wilson threatens losing Leafs
Personally I believe Burkes' ego is the problem. He tells players "HE will get the players if they don't perform" Its all about Burke. Ron Wilson is a good coach, it is even starting to affect him. Guess what... trading half your team away and then not showing faith in the team you have assembled does nothing but demoralize them. A viscous cycle. Burke = Gerry Reinsdorph. He may have been around when a championship or two was won, but his need to put his stamp on things has really thrown things off there. I am afraid Toronto has become the post Jordan Bulls.

P.S.

Hi quality Truth and Rumors double posts. You would think they could get this figured out by now.

They coulda used some tree trunks up front to protect romo. Jessica would have done it ... but he screwed that up too.

Might be time to see what they have in the AHL? Maybe you could switch out those leafs for the coyotes.
Posted Tuesday November 10, 2009, About: Florida goalie blames defense
Well, he speaks the truth, something that is sorely lacking in the NHL(at all levels none the less)... Have any of you seen them play... Yikes... defense is "not stellar" to say the least.

Umm that was last fourth of July... He wears that stuff all of the time.
Posted Saturday October 31, 2009, About: Caps coach squeals on Avery
Every sport needs heroes and villains. Anyone wishing for someone to get hurt is much worse than someone shouting their mouth off. You want avery out when Chris Simon and those kinda clowns play every game... You might understand once you get out of high school.
Posted Friday October 30, 2009, About: NHL shuns stunned Gretzky
Gretzky best player ever... Amazing ambassador to the sport... decent business man... poor coach but still deserve to be paid contractually. BTW Dallas is not filling Bankruptcy, not even close. I wonder how many sellouts will continue in Toronto once they or 2-20, but then again only canadians can understand hockey.
Posted Wednesday October 28, 2009, About: Hicks denies selling Stars
Stars make money alas especially this year. Hicks lost money on other entertainment endeavors. The Rangers would make money but HSG made some horrible money decisions early on. (A-Rods contract for one). He is not really in that bad of a situation, it is really just timing on a few things. Some other owners are in very tough situations.
Posted Tuesday October 27, 2009, About: NHL closer to settling Coyotes case
@ Ted I think you underestimate the people of U.S. That is like saying Canadians could never fully appreciate baseball or basketball or autoracing. Trust me there are plenty of hardcore hockey fans Dallas and Tampa. This argument becomes cyclic but the key is flelding winners. The entertainment dollar is spread ever thinly these days due to the fact the people have access to their particular choice of entertainment at clicks of a mouse. All sports are struggling.

While I am no fan of GB, exposing the game is what needs to happen for growth(not expansion). If we take all of these talk and arguments about Canadian Sunbelt teams, then apparently hockey sucks as a sport(as only people who say "aboot" understand or appreciate the sport) . I just don't think this is the case. Shouldn't Canadians want new people to see the best sport on earth? Put an exciting product out there and (new)people will come. Otherwise the 1,000,000 Canadian hockey fans can have it all to themselves, along with curling.

Heck when bowling outdraws hockey on TV, your only choice is to put it in front of people. That costs money. Is Phoenix, Atlanta or Florida dead? I don't know, but it will be interesting to see what happens if the Coyotes compete for the division or conference. I think you will suddenly begin to see "fans", as fair weather as they are,(regardless of sport). Yes, some teams are immune to suckery and fair weather... Cubs, Toronto Maple leafs, Packers... but alas they are the exception.

Just a thought or two.
Posted Monday October 26, 2009, About: Roddick blasts 'ridiculous' schedule
Wow ... according to half of you guys here MLB Baseball shouldn't even be a sport. You think A-Rod could run a marathon. He must not be a professional athlete. What morons. You have never played tennis at a true competitive level or any other professional sport to say tennis isn't hard. Arm chair idiots. Secondly from saying "if enough people stop playing" then they will have to do something. That is like saying if everyone stops buying gas they will have to come up with alternative fuels.

Yikes.. I am afraid.

Posted Friday October 16, 2009, About: NHL kicking tires on Canadian expansion?
I think Montreal has that sewn up, but it could work. The genesis of those statements were loosely based around the facts that those areas already had teams and had lost them for a variety of reasons. Unless those reasons are corrected perhaps almost over-corrected, people will shy away from them because it really hurts a sport community when a team leaves. People really harbor strong feeling about that stuff, particularly hockey fans. Besides soccer, I think Hockey fans are the most passionate(Man, Am I gonna get flamed on this one).

Peace

Hey PopKing... Read my whole post please. I said the numbers don't mean alot, EXCEPT everyone knows the experiencing a live hockey is what builds fans. Particularly if your team is winning. The difference between fair weather expansion teams that are successful(Dallas, Carolina, San Jose and Tampa) and those that haven't done well (Atlanta, Florida and Phoenix) is that fact that each of the successful ones have fielded winning teams. Win and your fans will come.
Posted Friday October 16, 2009, About: NHL kicking tires on Canadian expansion?
well Buc... just to keep things in perspective... Winnipeg's final season had average attendance of 11,316 and phoenix's final year(2008-2009???) 14,875 3K more, and almost a thousand more than the Islanders. Numbers to ponder.... not that they really mean that much.
Posted Friday October 16, 2009, About: NHL kicking tires on Canadian expansion?
I agree Atlanta is going to be a twice loser. Obviously Colorado is not. In all fairness, I do think maybe Winnipeg could make it . Quebec ... no way. Milwaukee definitely would work. I do bet however if Phoenix makes it to the playoffs, things will be much more interesting.
Posted Friday October 16, 2009, About: NHL kicking tires on Canadian expansion?
Quebec and Winnipeg are proven losers, as well as KC. Maybe they should try Seattle, Portland or Milwaukee
Posted Friday October 16, 2009, About: NHL kicking tires on Canadian expansion?
Phoenix in first place... Now that they have a real coach and are winning. I wonder what will happen?
Posted Tuesday October 06, 2009, About: Islanders' next home could be...
Bingo! cupqwest hit it on the head. The two biggest problems with team is 1. Putting a crappy product on the ice and 2. access to the team.

Phoenix unfortunately had both. Its not because the sun shines there.
