And metrosouth and others, Joba will never be as dominant as a starter as he is as a reliever- that is an indisputable fact, at least in terms of ERA. But ERA is a decieving stat for a reliever- its how many runs you save over a lesser pitcher. And based off the amount of innings pitched, A decent starter will still save probably twice as many runs over a replacement as a mediocre setup man would over an ace reliever.
The Joba to the pen thing is mental- it's more painful to lose in later innings than it is to lose in the earlier ones- yet most games are lost early on- even the worst teams with the worst bullpens lose maybe 20% of games they lead after 7, wheras with joba and mo, it might be 10%, since they both can't pitch every game and every day. Yet that is maybe 5-7 wins a year difference between the worst and best, but the teams with the worst starting pitching routinly are the worst teams in baseball. Also, starters pitch 2/3rds of the innings in baseball, even with so many relievers, it is most important to have your best pitcher affecting the most innings.
And joba will be fine as a starter- what evidence is there that he can't start? Minor league numbers compare with Josh Beckett, one of the most hyped prospects in the last decade. Joba was the #1 pitching prospect in all of baseball- why would he get that rating if he couldn't pitch at a major league level? He has great stuff. He wants to start- why would he want to be a reliever, who makes the same as carlos silva, who is pretty awful? He could be the yankees best starter THIS YEAR. He has stamina, and could help preserve the bullpen.
FInally, it's not impossible to find a guy to get great production out of in the 8th inning. Why is Farnsworth automatically setup man? He's terrible, and i'm pretty sure the yankees would let other guys pitch before he would be allowed in the eigth inning. Plus the Yankees have 4 guys who either have been better than farsnsworth at the major league level (britton, abaladejo), or have absolutly insane minor league numbers, which should at least translate into good major league numbers (edwar, scott patterson), not to mention they have a few more guys, plus starters who could be converted.
Can Joba be "replaced"? NO. But the amount of runs he would save over mussina, even with simply average performance, would be more than the difference between brian bruney and Joba.
baseball is all about the numbers and efficiency- maximizing production. As an organization, how much a loss hurts ultimatly does not matter, it's all about maximizing production towards wins and losses. So while the occasional eigth inning meltdown may hurt, the yankees ultimatly will win more games with Joba in the rotation.
