I very much disagree about the polish... at least with regard to Vick. Vick is a scattershot QB who just isn't accurate. He's never seen 60% passing in college or the pros. How is that polished? Young did get there in college, and his accuracy in that system is what makes me think he's salvageable.

Tebow's throwing at a better than 2/3rds success rate, which is great for a pocket passer, let alone a runner. He'd have to adapt to be a pro-style QB, but the accuracy at least is there. He's a helluva lot more polished than Vick, even now.

So don't spend your money on 'em.

I'm not saying that to be snarky, it's a legitimate suggestion. I got sick of it, and I stopped going to games, stopped buying stuff with sports logos, stopped actively spending any money whatsoever on them. I'm not cutting myself off... I still watch sports on broadcast TV and read SI.com and post about sports and stuff, and I realize that indirectly that benefits the leagues financially. But I'm done directly subsidizing them with money out of my paychecks.

And honestly, I haven't missed it.

How exactly does somebody saying "no comment" result in this screed against whining?

Pretty obvious what your bias is.
Posted Saturday December 20, 2008, About: Refs' calls against Lions in question
Yeah, honestly, they do have cause for complaint.

Though really, so do a lot of other teams. I do think the quality of officiating is declining, and the league needs to work on the problem instead of just fining everyone and burying its head in the sand.
Posted Wednesday December 03, 2008, About: Lawyer: Suspended Vikings to sue NFL
Exactly what that 2006 memo said is being contested. I know that the NFL admitted that the list of banned substances given to the hotline available to NFL players did not include Starcaps, which raises the question of what information was really available to players on this particular issue.

If the NFL really is resting its case on an ambiguous memo and an incorrectly updated list, everybody pulling the "rules are rules" bit can suck it.
Posted Monday November 24, 2008, About: Cardinals complain to NFL about Giants
I seriously doubt the Cardinals consider this a remotely serious matter, or are very upset about it. Thus, an informal complaint saying basically "Hey, they didn't follow the rules on this." I'd be surprised if stuff like this didn't happen all the time without being reported.

And it really wasn't worth reporting on.
Posted Sunday November 23, 2008, About: Official: NFL games are not fixed
I am not a gambler, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about something here... but isn't it extremely unusual for 2/3rds of the money on any game to be on one team? That's the point of the line, isn't it, to even up betting on both sides for the house? That way they're guaranteed to come out ahead on the vigorish. That sets off some warning bells immediately.

Couple that with a game in which penalty yardage was 115-5, AND there was a final decisive play that would have changed the betting outcome but was called incorrectly, and the whole package doesn't even come close to passing the initial sniff test.

I'm not saying there's actually anything illegal going on. In the real world, coincidences do happen. But it seems like Pereira is sticking his head in the sand on something where there should be a legitimate investigation.

When are these leagues going to learn that trying to cover up and pretend nothing is wrong isn't the way to inspire confidence in their legitimacy?
Posted Monday November 17, 2008, About: Detroit in danger of losing Lions?
You can keep asserting it, but it doesn't make it true. William Clay Ford *is* the sole owner of the Lions, and has been since the '60s. Check his Ford Motor Company bio: http://www.ford.com/about-ford/heritage/people/williamclayford/686-william-clay -ford

Ralph Wilson's been sole owner of the Bills during their whole existence too. Wayne Huizenga was sole owner of the Dolphins until he sold half. It's more common than you think, apparently.

Check your facts, dude.

Yeah... it's not doing the NFL any good having the Raiders looking like they could get beat by Alabama.

Posted Saturday October 25, 2008, About: Why Pacman won't play in '08
"I don't know why Jerry Jones would bring him back and deal with all of the public backlash and distractions he would bring."

Remember who we're talking about here. Jerry Jones doesn't care about public backlash or distractions. If he thinks Adam Jones can help him win games, it won't matter if Adam kills and eats an orphanage full of babies and then pledges allegiance to Al Qaeda. He'll have a helmet with a star on it as quickly as possible.
Posted Tuesday October 21, 2008, About: Henne's time coming in Miami?
It makes me curious about a two-headed monster at QB. Pennington is safe and reliable, but not the guy who can lead you back from a deficit. It'd be fun to pair him with somebody like Kurt Warner, who isn't safe and makes crazy aggressive mistakes, and is capable of throwing the ball downfield and putting up lots of points. Eliminate the worst of each, and play to their strengths by teaming them up.

Whisenhunt tried something like this last year before Leinart got hurt, but a 2nd year guy isn't exactly the ideal passer to be running the "safe" half of your offense. Pennington, on the other hand, would be perfect.

You have a very strange definition of "stunk it up all year".
Posted Friday October 10, 2008, About: Where are Allen's sacks?
When are people going to learn? If you're looking at a counting stat that isn't very high, it's going to be subject to wild fluctuations. Quarterbacks from year to year... their completion percentage stays much more steady than their TDs or INTs, because it's based on a larger number of plays. Other sports, similar results. Two sacks in five games? It's a small sample size. Heck, 15.5 sacks in 14 games is still a small sample size.

But really, this shouldn't be a huge surprise.
Posted Friday October 10, 2008, About: Martz limiting Vernon Davis
You're absolutely right that DCs have caught up with what Martz does. More importantly, Martz himself refuses to change and adapt to what defenses throw at him. It can still be effective, but usually only in the short term until the QB breaks or starts throwing up massive numbers of picks, or both.
Posted Friday October 10, 2008, About: Red flag on Teixeira
Ever hear of a stat called Win Probability? It measures the chances of a team winning the game before and after a player's at bats, and gives bigtime credit for game-impacting hits, and very little for hits in blowout wins or losses.

Teixeira's lifetime stats in this category are almost neutral. That is, the number of wins he's contributed to his team are almost exactly what you'd expect from his raw stats. That's NOT what you'd expect if indeed he's accumulating most of his stats in blowouts.

In other words, you're wrong.

As much as I hate being forced to agree with a Cowboy fan about anything, this is exactly right.
Posted Thursday September 18, 2008, About: Are Vikings done with Tarvaris?
As much as I've been a disbeliever in Tarvaris Jackson from the get-go, this is a great example of the impatience of today's NFL. The two most key positions for any team, the head coach and the quarterback, get switched in and out significantly faster than they did in years past. I don't have the numbers with me on this computer, but comparing the tenure of coaches and QBs over the last 10 years versus, say, 1980-1989, the numbers are stark. There's a quicker hook on coaches, and probably as a result, a quicker hook on QBs, meaning the average coach and QB now are less experienced than their predecessors were, on average. It's nothing short of insane that you can have a guy like Jackson go from being your current and future starter to being tossed aside in two games. Two games is nothing, certainly not enough to alter an opinion that drastically.
Posted Thursday September 18, 2008, About: Are Vikings done with Tarvaris?
"Racist pig? For what he said you are bringing out the race card? You guys gotta grow up and stop being so sensitive to every word. If it was a white guy like Brodie Croyle getting benched and someone said the same thing, i seriously doubt anyone would immediately come back with a "racist pig" comment."

That would be because there isn't a long history of men of other races calling white men "boy" as a de-facto racist term of disrespect. If there were, then you'd have a point.
Posted Tuesday September 16, 2008, About: Referee Hoculi's future in doubt?
The coverage of this story has been insane. There's nothing unusual about the NFL's statements about this. It was a blown call, referees are evaluated, and of course, this is a black mark on Hochuli. However, it's just one call, albeit a call magnified massively by its timing and the constraints of the rules on replay review.

Meanwhile, the headline for this article reads "Referee Hoculi's future in doubt?", with Hochuli's name spelled incorrectly. Can we have a review of how this might affect the future career of the FanNation intern who made a typo? I'm thinking "Erring FanNation intern to face future as homeless sex-worker?" would make about as much sense as the hyperbolic headlines about Hochuli's future.
Posted Monday September 08, 2008, About: Moss: Brady hit was dirty
"Not to shoot a deuce on Brady ... but you've gotta respect Favre and Manning ( both of em ) a little more this morning for never missing a start."
-The Intelligent Hoodlum

Not any more than I did a couple days ago, really. There's a sizable amount of luck that goes into streaks like theirs... Brady's streak was also impressive, but some bad luck put a spectacular end to it. If Favre or Manning happened to get hit in that manner, their knees would buckle too.
