True, but then again I've been trying to forget about Euro 2000 since 2000. Germany's leading goal scorer of the tournament (and only goal scorer): Mehmet Scholl - 1 goal.

Trust me, as I German, I love the shoot-out. I just think that a shoot-out is too random to judge the body of work of a league champion. If you want to keep the MLS structure, I say you have to do it the English way and replay the match if it ends in a draw after Extra Time.

Well, although you'll have plenty of Germans who actually like Henry, I would say most are currently relishing the Schadenfreude aspect of the whole situation. Let's be honest, we do not cheer for the French.

Look, I own a Franck Ribery Bayern Munich jersey which I picked up at the Allianz arena, right after we signed him. But I assure you, I was pulling for Ireland 100%. I like a few of the French players, although I can honestly say, the only two times I have ever cheered for France the nation was the '98 World Cup final and at Euro '04 for England-France. That match was amazing.

Also, the Germans tend to sympathize with the Irish for historical reasons.

Golden Goal is a hell of a lot better than the idiotic Silver Goal rule they switched to initially after dumping GG.

Or France-Germany 1982. I will say, the only major tournament final decided by a golden goal, Euro '96, was amazing. When Bierhoff's shot got by the hands of the Czech keeper I was out of my mind.

The MLS champion was decided by a coin toss. That's exactly what a penalty shoot-out is, a coin toss. I'm fine with the shoot-out in a knock out syle tournament, but to determine your domestic league champion on a coin toss? I'm just left shaking my head.

Ok, that clears some of it up for me. My confusion stems from the 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign. Because Germany were hosts, and therefore automatically qualifyed, they played only friendlies for two years. This caused them to slip down the rankings table since friendlies did not count towards the FIFA rankings. Always thought that rule was strange. I can see why FIFA changed it.

I have a question for someone who knows the answer, I read on CNN/SI in the article on FIFA Rankings that Spain recaptured the top spot in the ranking due to "exhibition wins over fellow World Cup qualifier Argentina and Austria."

Now I was under the impression that friendly's do not affect your FIFA ranking in any way. Any one know the truth here?

Also, Portugal jumping from 10th to 5th for two 1-0 wins over Bosnia is idiotic.

What I do know is that domestic league championships should not be decided by a shoot-out.

Would also very much like to point out, that 6 of the 18 players on the German roster were Bayern Munich youth players, including the goal keeper, Jan Schloesser, who served as Oliver Kahn's #2 for a while. The Hammer (Hitzlsperger) would go on to make a name for himself with Aston Villa, after leaving Bayern's youth set up, of course.

Of course he's going to say this. He's being vilified (rightly or wrongly) across the whole world. He's going to have to do the utmost to save his reputation. Although in all honesty, I think a year from now, no one will really care anymore. It's not like people say Maradona was a great player, but he had the whole Hand of God thing, so he was less great.

Bottom line, there will be no reply, so good PR move by Henry.

I will concede Germany were the only "major" team in euro qualifying that was matched in the group with a strong team that continued to win and thereby kept the qualifying close. Had Russia defeated Germany and then not blown their final qualifier they might have gone through.

Ok, also have to point out that Germany wrapped up its spot in South Africa in 9 matches after winning 8 matches and drawing 1. The draw happened during the second qualifyer against Finland. Germany also defeated Russia in both of their matches. So really, I need to know when did it look like Germany were headed towards the playoffs?

When did Germany look to be headed into the playoffs? They were in control of their group at all times. Granted if Germany had lost three or four games which they won, that may have happened. But in that case everyone was in danger of ending up in the playoffs.

No but seriously, Ireland go robbed. When it went into extra time I kind of thought that France would win, somehow, no matter what happened. I don't think FIFA would take kindly to a team containing Henry, Ribery, Benzema etc. being left out of the World Cup.
