They have to get Dwight, first.
Posted Tuesday May 07, 2013, About: Asik hearing Dwight Howard's footsteps?
Yes, they do. They are only 4-5 million under the cap next season. That's not enough to get Howard to Houston, even if he wants to go there. The Rockets are younger than the Lakers, but Howard will have the same problems offensively in Houston that he has in LA. He'd be the third/fourth option and James Harden dominates the ball and over-dribbles more than Kobe does.

While I disagree with you about when their perimeter deficiencies occured, that's true. Not defending the outside will kill you. But I have an issus with your comment. You can't tell what would have happened had they been healthy. I still believe that, had they been healthy this season, they would be a much better team all around. Which, in turn, would not mean a seventh seed in the playoffs (they finished just 2 games out of the 6th spot). The projected starting line-up of Nash, Bryant, Artest, Gasol and Howard played fewer than 20 games together over the entirety of this season. That's not NEARLY enough time to develop any chemistry. Certainly not enough time to claim that they wouldn't be a better team if healthy.

It mattered to all of the teams involved. Maybe the Spurs had the least amount riding on it, but it meant a lot to all involved for seeding in the playoffs. If the Lakers lose those games, they don't get in. If they lose to the Rockets, they are the 8th seed instead of the seventh. had the Warriors struggled in their last two, LA would have been the sixth seed. They mattered and LA won them. Congratulations to the Spurs for beating a banged up team. But that changes nothing that I've said.

Well. Yourself?

Indeed. Artest quietly had a decent season this year, too, despite injury issues.

I stand corrected.

I've used this picture since Dwight made it his Twitter avatar last summer.

Didn't they end the season beating three playoff teams, including the Spurs? Just curious.

He hasn't played great the past couple of years, but he played EXTREMELY well on March 22nd.

I believe he was talking about Nash, DJ.

I was simply offering you a suggestion, much in the same way that you offered me one. Mine just made more sense. Anyhoo, there is a fine line between excuses and reasons. You can call it an excuse all you'd like, but it's still a reason for their poor showing. If you disagree, that's fine. I guess you're smarter than Greg Popovich.

I somewhat agree, but Nash, when healthy, is a much better player than Sessions. He's a better shooter, better ball handler and he's better at running an offense. Nash was injured and still gave the Lakers more in the playoffs than Ramon did last season. The only two things that Sessions has on Nash is youth and athleticism.

There are sign-and-trades, but they are a LOT trickier and there are more hoops to jump through. Teams over the cap can't just complete sign and trade for guys like they used to be able to.

Not unless they do some serious shifting of money. They already have $54 million tied up next season in salary. Even if the cap goes up a couple of million, it will still sit at $60 million. That's not going to get it done. They would need to move pieces, and not just the little pieces to get the job done.

I agree. They sucked this season compared to the expectations. All I'm saying is that there is a REASON that they sucked this season. As for moving on, if you'd like to engage in discussion about something else, I'd suggest you pay attention to another thread. Chances are, the Lakers thread is going to contain Lakers commentary. Thanks for your time.

The problem with that is that he DOES help against guards. He can erase shots at the rim as well as any other player in the league, when he's healthy. That's what he does. It's a help, whether or not J.A. Adande wants to admit it. It's called TEAM defense for a reason. NOBODY can stop an elite player on the wing one-on-one for an entire game. It's impossible.

I agree. There is no team that he would go to that offers him something that the Lakers aren't. He's not the number one option on ANY of the teams that have the cap space to sign him this summer. None of the other teams play through the post and no other team can offer the money that LA can offer. He may leave, but it will be because he badly wants out of Los Angeles and the spotlight that comes with it. Nothing else.

Their team defense wasn't horrible. I think that if Dwight was healthy, that would help. If Artest was healthy all year, that would help. If Gasol were healthy, that would help. Heck, even if Steve Nash were healthy, that too, would help. The Lakers actually shot BETTER than the Spurs did last night, but their horrid offense (22 turnovers) led to 24 SA points. Having a healthy Nash and that familiarity with each other cuts that down. In games one and two of the series, LA was close in the third quarter until Dwight picked up his 4th foul and had to go to the bench. That hurts, especially when you're already down players. I'm not saying by any stretch of the imagination that I thought that the Lakers were going to win this series. Nobody in their right mind would have thought that they could make a serious run with the injuries cutting their legs out from underneath them. But a healthy Laker team this season could have done some damage, even as slow as they were. Defense isn't about speed. It's about effort, hard work and chemistry. They didn't have that.

See, I just disagree. If they have an entire season of relatively good health, they are a much, MUCH better team, in my opinion. You need the chemistry and team-building that comes with playing together. Tha familiarity and consistency that it brings is invaluable. The Spurs are a prime example of what chemistry and good coaching can do for a team. They aren't the most talented team, but they are always contending because they have a great combination of coaching, chemistry and familiarity. You can't get there if you don't spend time on the floor with your team. You can't build that basketball chemistry when half of your team is on the sideline wearing a suit for the majority of the season. It doesn't work.
