Garrett was well aware of how JJ ran the team when JJ hired him before hiring Wade. I was definitely no Wade Phillips fan but the team's failures during those four years were also Garrett failures, too, since he had control of the offense.
Garrett should be coaching for his job this season, despite what JJ says.
Those of you who think real football isn't played in climate-controlled stadiums should take a hit from one of those 260 lb linebackers running at 4.5 speed and see if it feels fake.
BTW, I watched the "Ice Bowl" on a B&W TV with outside antenna reception. To this day I still wonder what the outcome would have been had each team been able to display the skill and athleticism that made many of those players HOFers. Sporting events should be about the players, not the weather.
With the Rangers he had problems with his eyes in day games. Now, it's the bright, night lights????? Also, the story said his sinus problems started May 5. WTH was the matter from opening day until then?
Hamilton has loads of talent but he's a high-maintenance head case with a ton of baggage. The Rangers bent over backwards to see that he was supported and comfortable with the franchise. Hambone and wifey Katy, however, stated early and often last season that they didn't NEED the Texas Rangers nor owe them anything.
Okay. I'm glad they didn't let the door hit them in the backside on their way out. If Hambone stays in his slump much longer, he will fall off the wagon, guaranteed. He did it in Texas twice that was made public and that was when things were going well for him. A protracted slump on a losing team in a town filled with temptations...
Garrett will call the plays. Since his job is on the line this season, he will want as much control as he can get. It's put up or shut up time for Garrett, Romo and this Cowboys team.
The Angels have a declining superstar in Pujols, a head case in Hamilton (good riddance), a "came-back-down-to-earth" player in Trout and a rotation that really sucks without Weaver. I don't know how much of that is Mikey's fault but I'm really enjoying watching the Angels struggle.
No way the Rangers should have kept Hambone after he quit on the team last September. He's got loads of talent but he's a head case as well as a recovering drug addict. He will go on a hitting tear eventually but that won't change my opinion of him.
The Rams definitely got the better end of the trade. It remains to be seen if Washington benefitted greatly, also. I'm a huge RGIII fan but like a lot of fans, I wonder about his longevity. I hope he is great for years so that we all get to enjoy watching his talents on the gridiron.
Jeff Fischer is a pretty good talent evaluator and I expect the Rams to be a contender soon and for several years to come. Look for Sam Bradford to have his breakout year this season.
That's absolutely correct. There's nothing worse than striking out or hitting into a double play when there are runners in scoring position. A little ground ball single or even a sac fly in run-scoring situations is good hitting. Swinging for a three-run homer on every pitch in game situations is not good hitting. See Hamilton, Josh.
Because they are the most valuable sports franchise in the US.
Because they are the biggest TV draw in the NFL
Because they have the largest fan base in the NFL
Because they are America's Team...like it or not.
Imagine how popular they would be if they won. Also, there are very few sports fans who are ambivalent about the Cowboys. They either love them or hate them and usually are passionate about it, whichever emotion they display. I've followed them and been a fan since 1960 but I'll admit that I am a bandwagon fan now. If they appear to be doing good, I'll pay more attention. Lately, (like the past 15 years) I haven't gotten too excited about them. I only went to one game this season and it was the one against Cleveland. However, I did get to watch the game from Halliburton's suite at Cowboys Stadium. The food was good, the beer was free and the Cowboys won so I had a good time.
Garrett is lucky to still have a job at $4 mil a year. Taking away his playcalling was actually an act of mercy by Jones. If Garrrett had a clue, he would have given up the playcalling last seasona fter his time-management debacle vs Arizona.
Exactly. I'm not a fan of Jerry the GM but he was right in taking the play-calling duties away from Garrett.
The Cowboys may have been ranked 6th in yards but I'll gurantee they weren't that high in points scored. They could move the ball between the twenties but they conldn't score touchdowns in the red zone...usually because Garrett would get cute and try something totally different from what got them down there.
If everyone remembers, Uncle Wade didn't fare very well calling defensive plays as head coach, either.
I'm not thrilled about hiring Monte Kiffin but I am excited about the Cowboys going back to the 4-3 defense. That scheme won them five superbowls. All the 3-4 has gotten them is embarrasment.
Except for Dallas fans, I don't remember anyone else gnashing their teeth over the field conditions in the '90's when the Cowboys would play the 'Niners at the 'Stick. Late in the season when the tide is "in", that place is a quagmire. They laid down new turf for the '92 NFC Championship game and there were huge squares of turf being displaced when players would make a hard cut. Of course, the crappy field was considered an advantage for the beloved Forty-Niners so the sports media conveniently overlooked the safety aspect of playing on it.
The RGIII injury wasn't the fault of the field. Even sloppy grass fields are better than playing on synthetic turf where knees are concerned. No, the fault was Shanahan's. Just like concussions, leaving the decision up to the player is not acceptable. Any player worth a damn will say anything to get back on the field. Even casual football fans could tell RGIII was injured and Shanahan should have pulled him in the first half. I just hope the injury doesn't ruin Griffin's career.
Thank you, Mr. Steeler. Everyone forgets that the team Gruden built was also in the Superbowl that he won with "Dungy's" team. Dungy couldn't get Tampa to the SB (but Gruden did) and Dungy only won one SB with perhaps the best QB of the past 20 years. Those Colt defenses pretty much sucked, too. Methinks Dungy gets way more credit than he has earned.
What would make Gruden give up his cushy TV job to coach again?...Ego, that's what. Every successful player and coach have it. That's one of the things that makes them successful. The Eagles have talent. They have Michael Vick. They have never won a SB. No coach has ever won a SB with two different teams. Gruden would be the first if he could pull it off. In addition, the money ain't too shabby, either. That's what would bring him back.
The non-Cowboys fans don't like it but the 'Boys are still America's team. They are the most visible, the most valuable (2.1 billion) the most glamorous, the biggest draw on TV and the most recognizable football franchise around the world...and second place isn't even close. What's so astonishing about them being "America's Team" is that they have only won one playoff game in the past 16 years.
Another reason why they are America's Team is that no football fan is apathetic about the Cowboys. One either loves them or hates them but either way, they are always significant.
As far as Jerry Jones and his style goes, put yourself in his place. You bought a struggling football team in 1989 (they just went 3-13 the previous season) for $140 million and built them into a $2.1 billion enterprise with the most recognizeable name in American football playing in the biggest, most modern sports stadium in the world.
Would you sit back and take a chance on someone else ruining all of that? Would you gamble on someone else keeping the Cowboys marketable and extremely profitable on the chance that they might win? If I had three SB rings and was the cash cow that the Cowboys have become, i don't know that I'd change a thing. Just saying...
Sometimes the best off-season move a franchise can make is no move. The Rangers have lots of young talent and it's time to see if those youngsters can excel at the MLB level.
Losing Hamlilton to free agency didn't hurt...losing him to the Angels did. That was a calculated move by Hamilton, too. I think the guy is a complete lowlife after all the Rangers organization did for him. Sure, he drove in lots of runs but he also stayed hurt, is a head case, requires 7/24/365 babysitting and he quit on the Rangers this past September...after struggling in June-July because he decided to quit smokeless tobacco in the middle of the season. I wrote last spring and still wish the Rangers had traded his ungrateful ass last year.
I choose to believe that Daniels and Nolan Ryan know a lot more about the Rangers and baseball than the rest of us. I trust them to do what's best for the team both now and for the future.
Garrett probably returns, regardless of how the 'Boys finish the season. There were 90,000+ fans in Cowboys Stadium for the Steelers game. That's what matters most to Jerry.
But...if Jerry did decide to go after Payton, I can see it happening if Jerry offered the $8 Million per season that Payton will get in NO.
At equal money, even with Jerry's meddling, just look at the choices:
Cowboys Stadium vs The Superdome - Newest, biggest, most glamorous vs The Doo-Doo Dome DFW Metroplex vs New Orleans - Modern, upscale, chic vs Old, humid, dirty The Cowboys vs The Saints - America's Team vs the Aint's
If Jerry wants to win, he will go after Payton and if Payton wants to be at the top of the NFL, he will go to the Cowboys.
