He was indeed. I really have no idea why the red Sox would sign him or block him from being signed. At this stage of his career, Brian Giles does not equal difference maker.
JayEss - The Pirates have been having fire sales - but not for prospects, for money and the washed up Joe Randa's of the world. Your bitterness is understood but misplaced if you thought they were picking up prospects.
This is the 1st year for smart baseball decisions in Pittsburgh since Syd Thrift was fired. Notice last year (under Littlefield) the Pirates took on Matt Morris at the deadline. This year (Huntington in place) they pick up multiple A and AAA prospects (some moved to the big club, becuase our AAA and MLB teams ain't that good). Pennant by 2010.
IRT asking the Jays for their top two prospects, well, you gotta ask. You never know when someone will do something stupid (see Pirates, 1993-2008 1/2)
"have a 100 percent graduation rate, and the atmosphere that Coach Wright and his coaching staff have is great," Bell said. "Coach Wright is honest. He just wants the best for his players, and the family atmosphere he creates is something you can't find anywhere else."
Awesome. When's the last time you saw a basketball recruit choose a school based on graduation rate. Congrats kid. No matter if you can play basketball or not, you've got a good head on your shoulders...
I'm not saying Lillibridge and Jones are not good. Both are clearly young players with promise. But from a Pirate perspective:
- At shortstop, Bixler had better AA and AAA numbers. Bix does not project to be a star, but neither does Lillibridge (either couldcertainly fool me there). Both are roughly the same age. No need to add there.
- In the OF, Pirates have Pearce, McCutchen, Tabata, McClouth. More depth is needed there, but Jones is not at the Bay level.
So in short, I find this MLB.com blog post to be "shaky" in credibility. By the way - the Pirates no longer have "owners" - they have "owner" singular.

Value is roughly the same as previously advertised plus NH has said previously he's willing to haggle. (NOTE - Expect Bay's price is so high because Bucs really are not looking to move him)

Somewhere Kyle Lowry is screaming "What do I have to do to get outta this place?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Also, Nady to the Mets for Perez and Hernandez has worked out well.
The problem for the Bucs has been too many minor leaguers for the Joe Randa's of the world.
New GM, maybe better result. Hit the bidding war at it's peak Neil!!!!
Thanks Pens...

On a not-really-related note, revisiting the issue of the Pirates' "exorbitant" demands for their players, there appears to be a pattern in place where these reports -- as well as many of their predecessors -- emanate from New York. To fully understand why, one has to appreciate the general view there that a) New York teams are owed everything when it comes to sporting glory and b) it is the responsibility of the Pittsburghs of the world to help facilitate that. Thus, when Pittsburgh plays hard-to-get, it is treated by some who run or work for those teams with surprise, disappointment and, ultimately, anger vented through the press.
"They won't take Aaron Heilman and four other players we don't want for Bay? Who do they think they are?"
Had a good talk last night with someone infinitely more experienced in this business than I am, and he described in vivid detail many examples of that over the years.

Nice...
I know I should drop this, but you pose an interesting idea. Just to make sure we are on the same page, let me review the Bucs minor league system:
- 1 CF (should be up by 2010) McCutchen
- 1 1B/RF (should be up by next year) Pearce
- 1 3B (underperforming - maybe by 2010???) Walker
- 1 RHP (Just starting to recover from TJ) Lincoln
- 1 SS (projects as a poss utility infielder) Bixler
- Absolutely no one else that projects to ML talent (let alone ML impact)
Pirates crrently hae the worst starting rotation and pen in the ML. If they trade the top 3 or so prosects for pitching today - that may lower the team ERA by about 1/2 point. That does not put them in a wildcard race. And it kills the future. So to what end does selling our prospects lead when the current players are 6 games under and adding 1 quality (or maybe 2 mid-grade) ML pitchers lead?
As an aside, I'd love to keep Bay and Nady. I just don't know how they can keep them both (long term) and improve the talent elsewhere before they are both on social security...
