gainey could dump other guys that are doing relatively well in Montreal, even though they're becoming fan favorites. See: Cammalleri and Gionta. Bringing Vinnie to Montreal would EASILY be justified even if you lose a few good guys for just one Vinnie. The fans would lose their minds in joy if they found out Vinnie was coming to Montreal, for an example of that, see the all-star game in Montreal. They went apesh*t for him then cause they THOUGHT he MIGHT be coming to Montreal.

the thing everyone forgets is that he WANTS to play in Montreal, he's said it multiple times himself. Every true Montrealer who grows up a Habs fan wants to come home and play for their home team. He's got #4 as a jersey cause of his idol Jean Beliveau, a player of whom retired well before Vinnie was even born. That's true hockey knowledge to idolize someone prior to your own time like that. If it's Vinnie's call, he'd want to be in Montreal, the finances obviously come into effect, but none the less, he'll try to wind up there in some way shape or form.

WTF? I STILL don't understand how dumb a city has to be to not rule on letting a sports team owner spend millions, if not billions, of dollars to revamp a part of town. The number of jobs, from construction to full time jobs in the area after construction, should be the sole deciding factor, not to mention the taxes they'd collect on all that. ****, if i was a city manager somewhere and I had land to GIVE AWAY for a sports team to call "home" then trust me, i would do just that!

put most average players with a single team for as long as sundin was with the leafs, and they'll put up the same numbers. Sundin hasn't done a damn thing outside of regular season. He'll get the HOF, but i personally don't find he fully deserves it.

wow, this insanely old news. Comment #22 so far however is the most accurate one about the situation in Montreal. the only thing i'd have to say though is that if Koivu had been offered a contract, he probably would have stayed. I think the one year he got out of Anaheim is a sign that he doesn't intend on being there long either, a season with Teemu to see how they do together. I wouldn't be shocked to see him bounce to Minnesota the next year in order to play with his brother. Kovalev was at times a genius, at times incredibly frustrating. Montreal will miss him when he has those genius nights in Ottawa, and laugh when he gets benched for a few days to re-focus again. I'm hoping Gainey's gamble pays off. time will tell!

you guys were expecting bettman to pull through on something? wow... i mean, just for that alone you deserve to be the laughing stock of the league even without a team. With that said, Long Island would be MORONIC to NOT let him build a whole new district, especially in this economy. the ability to provide any sort of jobs at this point should be any states priority, and here you are with a sports team owner willing to do just that!
