we have neither the revenue nor the culture to make such drastic changes....
what you need to understand is MLS takes very slow and calculated steps.... flooding the league with money would help the talent and the development, but would we go into too deep of debt??
for what he endures by fans, Garber has formed quite a stable league.... given the increase in revenue you will see more and more changes.... the addition of another DP... the increase of the cap... increase of the minimum pay... etc...
in all fairness to Beasley, he was getting PLENTY of time prior to his injury that stimmed a series of injuries... he was doing quite well to be truthful... then the injuries have taken its toll on him and he's lost a step... not to mention the player who took his spot his a run of solid performances
as far as i know Renya didn rot on the bench....
as for the level of play... i agree toe to toe SPL is really no better then MLS apart Celtic and Rangers... thought one would argue he'd get european PT by going to rangers.... either way i hope Holden avoids Scotland ...
i might have missed your response, so please repeat if necessary.....
BUT last season, could you call the NJRB league champions if they beat the Crew?? after they barely scraped in to the playoffs b/c of a DCU loss in the final game?? could you call them league champions and keep a straight face??
the playoffs are electrical i agree... and there is NO reason to do away with them... but i will forever simply say that in the 09 season, the Crew were league champions and RSL were the cup champions
theres your cancer...
while they are certainly doing it right year after year, the problem here is that the top players going to college aim to go to these schools... and if you have the top college players you should contend year after year
personally id like to see more and more players who retire take assistant coaching spots to get the experience... though i will argue some are ready for the challenge.... Kreis took an expansion team and in 3 yrs produced a solid side.... problem is not every team is like RSL... NJRB fire their coaches on average every year.... they've had a coach per year of existance.... its a risk, but i think former playes are the way to go
so long as each cycle of kids produced 2-3 players that contribute to the USMN we'll be fine... bc players around the US are developing at different levels and ages... in fact its highly more likely that the kids who dont make the U17s will make a larger impact with the USMN
players like EJ, DMB and LD were wonder kids b/c of their speed.... of course some have accomplished more then others and some were obvious standouts as youth as well....
Brandenton picked players who could help the youth teams succeed... this included speedy players though they might lack tactical and technical ability... things are changing... you are seeing more and more Youth nats already abroad playing in reserves and academies... this past U17 pool we already had 2 kids in england, 2 in germany and 2 on the possible move... thats 6 kids prior to their 18th bday... things are improving, they just take time
of course not all will succeed (as we've seen) but they'll most likely make their way back to the US and we'll see more talented MLS'ers develop as the years go on
Nowak- Chicago Fire
Kreis- Burn and RSL
Hamlett- Rapids
preki- wizards, fusion & wizards again
Vermes- metrostars, rapids, wizards
Warzycha- Crew
Williams- DCU, Metro, DCU & Metro
Yallop- Mutiny
Segares---Conde---Baky----Ward would have rivaled ANY teams starting defense.... i would have that as my starting defense over any other starting Def. in the league
but to bring up our depth in defense and compare it to any of the other Semifinalist starters is ridiculous... no one in our starting D in the ECF were regular starters for the fire until the injuries came... how can you possibly compare our depth to LA/Hou/RSL who had their same starting defensive lineup nearly all season (with some changes here and there)??
CJ- backup for conde/baky, could easily start on a number of teams
Prideaux- while slow, a good RB who makes few mistakes
Robinson- slowed since his injury, but formidable at times, though mistake prone
Banner- LM to makeshift LB, didnt do too bad, but clearly not his position
Washington- how is he a Pro?? obviously cheap depth
Woolard- is actually a good defensive player, though id say he's more of a D-Mid...
Defense was actually our strongest in depth... if you look at who is coming off the bench:
Mapp- a guy who has only showed up for 5-6 games this season (crap through the rest)
Nyarko- good prospect
Lowry- like him and he'll make a solid MLS'er
Banner- id start him over Mapp ANY DAY OF THE WEEK
Baggio- has promise, still too raw... solid MLSer in future
....
like i said, we were a deep team and Hamlett accomplished nothing.... its great we made it back to the Semifinals... anything less would not have been acceptable... we fire fans DEMAND the best from our squads.. you find the cancer and remove it
i might just have to spam a couple to attempt to catch up... though HIGHLY unlikely
7 of which you listed are playing ball... 6 MLS 1 EPL... while that's not the best success rate, i suspect the 03' U17's will have similar number if not a bit more and so forth...
either way, what this should tell you is that Brandenton did not select to develop in the past, but rather to win... Poor selection of players showed as they grew older... mix that with the fact MLS doesnt offer the best of salaries, other opportunities were probably taken (jobs)....
i did not call the 01' a success
