Everything is a panic move with Mo Johnston.

Explain to me why he's allowed to run a club again.
Posted Friday April 11, 2008, About: Fire stokes Red Bulls feud
I'm going to do something you guys hate, I'm "crossing the streams!"

In the NHL, the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins HATED each other (and they still do). They would never deal with each other. Each owner always accused each other of shenanigans. Fans spat on each others graves.

And then in the late 90's, Pittsburgh traded their superstar, Jamior Jagr, to Washington.

They "mysteriously" managed to agree to put aside their hate for a short period of time.

Now, that said, while Hauptman may have a "don't talk to New York" ultimatum issued to his front office, I highly doubt this will affect any future personnel movement.
Posted Friday April 11, 2008, About: Traffic school for Beckham?
Speaking as a person who has gone to traffic school: If it keeps points off your license, do it.

Speaking as an American soccer fan: Eerrrrr... okay?
Posted Saturday April 05, 2008, About: France keeper Coupet to Red Bulls?
RBNY's goalkeepers are always cursed. They've never had a good one and typically they're plagued with injuries. Any keeper going to New York is doomed to fail...

That said, isn't it about time for someone to break the trend?

(I hope you just now didn't notice I'm a DC United fan)
Posted Tuesday April 01, 2008, About: Sanchez fired as Mexico coach
No one else has done so little with more talent.

Now the FMF may finally get a real coach... which will sadden me. :P

crosscountrycpjon: TFC needs to find religion.

:-D
Posted Sunday March 30, 2008, About: Red Bulls to loan out goalie
gkcoach30: You're acting like I said a bad thing. All I said is that this is simply something the MLS doesn't usually do. Chill out dude.
Posted Sunday March 30, 2008, About: Seattle FC chasing Thierry Henry
You guys are naive.

Forget boredom. MONEY TALKS.

Why is Becks here early? MONEY.

Why will Henry be here early? MONEY.

There is a reason why there's DP rule.
Posted Sunday March 30, 2008, About: Red Bulls to loan out goalie
Stauff: Easy. MLS teams RARELY loan players. When someone goes on loan, it's a big deal. It's typically an USL team that loans a player to the MLS, in return for a friendly (or the option to buy out the loan).

And what's up with the choke slam thing?
Posted Sunday March 30, 2008, About: Seattle FC chasing Thierry Henry
Nope, it's not.

This rumor has been out there for about 3 weeks now. Only, 3 weeks ago, it was rumored that Henry would not come until Seattle's second season. Now it looks like Seattle will get him right away in '09, which would be a real coup.

I hate to do this, but look back at Beckham. Everyone knew he was going to the MLS. But everyone expected Becks to wait until he was 36 or 37. But he came here early.

Henry is doing the exact same thing. And it's going to make A LOT of Europeans mad again.

I love it. One day (we can only dream), these guys will be coming even earlier, in the middle of their prime.
Posted Sunday March 23, 2008, About: Why England coach picked Becks
You know, I'm not a Beckham fan. I'm a DC United fan. I prefer a club over an individual. But just by looking at all of your reactions to a guy who can still play, I hope Becks curves one into the box off a corner and get a goal off a set piece just to mess with your guys' brains.

Give him a break.
Posted Saturday March 22, 2008, About: U.S.-England friendly at Wembley
Poland, England and Spain in consecutive games, with Portugal potentially in the pipeline? All of them played in Europe?

I'd say that's a mighty fine schedule.
Posted Saturday March 22, 2008, About: Galaxy coach rips Chelsea's style
But it will be, "sexy." ;-)
Posted Saturday March 22, 2008, About: Galaxy coach rips Chelsea's style
I know the joke behind "Sexy Football," but there is a bit of logic to it. "Bunker ball" is not only boring, but more and more skilled teams are figuring out ways to completely destroy bunker ball. How so? Fluid, possession ball, or as Mr. Gullit likes to call it, "Sexy Football."

But here's the thing: You squad must be absurdly talented. A mediocre team can play bunker ball with high levels of success (see: Any MLS, A-League, J-League and K-League teams who have had success over top flight Euro teams in recent years). The goal in the possession game is to beat the opposing team into submission with possession football in the offensive third. You don't need to shoot, just run their defenders ragged.

Unfortunately for Gullit, his version of "Sexy Football" will be god awful as his LA squad doesn't have the skill for it. When a possession team loses the ball, they heavily rely on skilled central defenders to bail them out, something LA has absolutely nothing of. Gullit's squad will likely see themselves on the wrong side of a lot of 4-3 games.
Posted Friday March 21, 2008, About: What's behind Pele-Ronaldo feud?
Pele can say whatever he wants, he's entitled to it, but when did he retire? A few decades ago. Every day Pele looks more and more like a cranky old man who does nothing but harken back the "old days."

In the words of my generation, "Get over it."
Posted Friday March 21, 2008, About: Beckham can buy MLS team
Finally, a Beckham rumor that actually makes sense.

Johnnyrunner made a great great great analogy, however, I don't think it'll be for LA.

More likely for Chivas. Becks will probably be the bailout for a struggling ownership, whether that's Chivas or Kansas City. I HIGHLY doubt he'll be awarded an expansion side unless he's a part of a bigger ownership group.
Posted Tuesday March 18, 2008, About: MLS to add foreign players
Wiser 1: 1) Already done. See: ABC. Heck, they even pay for the games.
2) Not going to happen for a while, but isn't this the goal of any sports league?
3) This will only happen once the MLS loses its single entity structure. BUT the MLS has yet to make a profit yet, while SUM is making a huge profit with multiple soccer properties. Until the MLS can stand on it's own two feet (which we all hope is soon), it'll have to be run by SUM.

As for adding foreign players being a detriment to the MLS, let's think about why it has to be done: The quality of American players that are not on the top tier is very low. How do you improve this? It's a two fold solution: 1) Train them when they younger and 2) Train them with already established talent. All the established American talent play overseas. So who are you going to use? The next best thing: People who actually want to play in the MLS.
Posted Tuesday March 18, 2008, About: Toronto FC closing in on Guevara
Madridist... tourettes? :-)

Guevara was one of those who originally thought the MLS was a cakewalk, and then became badly mistaken. When he finally realized what he had gotten into, it was too late. This ended up putting a black mark on his career and he wasn't able to get into any league but the Honduran league.

Hopefully this time around he'll take it seriously.
Posted Tuesday March 18, 2008, About: United-Dynamo trade in works
This is where it's all wrong. Barlow is a product of DC's youth system, but Houston was able to draft the kid. Houston should have never been able to do that. If so, what's the point of having a youth system?
Posted Monday March 17, 2008, About: Mexico's Sanchez: We were a failure
David James Brown: As much as it pains me to say it, I disagree. Mexico isn't having an "England Moment." Mexico is still the cream of the crop of CONCACAF. What's going on is over confidence and arrogant invincibility.

Have other teams caught up enough to give Mexico a challenge? Yes. But have they caught up enough to knock them off the CONCACAF pedestal? Not even close. England is down and out, Mexico is on top, despite the behest of the United States (who is no pushover in their own right). Mexico is still waaaay on top talent wise as well.

Mexico just needs a coach who doesn't believe in "the perfect race," and one who will make actual tactical decisions based on his personnel and not what worked 20 years ago. Hugo is getting too much credit for the Copa America run. He is squandering more games with more talent than anyone in a FIFA regulated country.
Posted Monday March 17, 2008, About: Mexico's Sanchez: We were a failure
I'm going to have to strongly disagree with you moises.

This team has been dubbed "The Golden Generation." Only two of the supposed 15 "great young Mexican" players are over in Europe (because their teams wouldn't let them go).

This was a youth all star team. Mexico not only should have won their group, they should have dominated the group.

Sanchez's reign as coach will soon be over if the senior team loses its friendly at the end of the month.
