the real deal is that they just picked up sproles and are getting maclin back. they now have a glut at that position and all else being equal, dropping the 10 mil salary is the thing to do. its a smart move it they can pull it off.
Posted Saturday March 22, 2014, About: Tony Parker wants 5-6 more NBA seasons
he sure does. i believe pops already has him down to under 25 mpg since the allstar break.

parker is the anti-AI. he understands what is needed to extend his career while still winning and is willing to adjust accordingly.

because the nba is comprised of many variables which include the defending champions, the heat. its pretty simple really.

youre right, but if it were as easy as a 500 word blog post, the problem would have been solved already. things can get complex and most of the time surface logic just isnt enough.
Posted Friday March 07, 2014, About: Barkley's unique solution for tanking
your point may be valid but you picked the wrong example team.

the bobcats have one of the top attendance teams in the nba and have had for years. and this is with jordan as one of the worst gms in nba history. we have been stinking it up only because jordan is horrible at everything front office.

he destroyed the wizards team and then came here and destroyed the strong base that bob johnson let bickerstaff build.

but now that jordan has hired cho and seems to have stepped back to let a real professional do his job, the bobcats are definitely on the way up. we may not ever make it to the finals but we are definitely the most competitive and entertaining that we've been since bickerstaff was coaching the team.

the interest is here in charlotte, we just all got sick of jordans stupid moves that destroyed the team. while everyone else it trying to tank charlotte fans relish the thought of playing the heat in the playoffs. we wont win that series for sure, but its our next stepping stone to being elite.

3 potential red flags.

1. in general the advantage shifts to the hitters the more pitches that they see from a pitcher. so in theory when batters havent seen you at all, you, the pitcher should have a huge advantage at that point. apparently according to the article in 3 innings 4 batters laid good wood on the ball. something do definitely take note of.

2. of the 4 batters that supposedly hit the ball hard, 3 of them are nobodys as far as being known as good hitters.

3. hybrid of 1 & 2: tanaka only pitched 3 innings. that means that the "nobodys" laid wood on him without seeing him more than once or maybe twice thru the batting order. obviously too small of a sample size to make a definitive judgement for sure, but again something to take note of.

5. barkleys plan wont work because it will actually cause more tanking. the bad teams will be at the bottom anyway. theyre tanking harder to get more pp-balls, but they would have been at the bottom anyway. what you will have with barkleys plan is basically every team that would have to face a 1 or 2 seed would also tank because they have an equal chance at the no. 1 pick.

6. the best, and probably only way to offset tanking is to have quality, ethical officials. the reason there are basically no major upsets in the nba playoffs is because the officiating overwhelmingly favors the talented players. so the most talented players should lead their team furthest in the playoffs anyway, but then they also get all the refs calls. the nba games are not "fixed" in the traditional sense, but they are "fixed" because of unethical, incompetent and prejudicial officials.

during the regular season a middle-of-the-road player can either aggressively challenge wade or lebron or any other star with high-effort defense and pick up 3 "star-favored" fouls and go sit on the bench and score no points themselves and thus ruin their contract bargaining power, or they can just cruise thru and let the star score their 30 but then score 18 themselves and it looks like they had a great game.

the same applies in the playoffs. the 1 seed should beat an 8 seed on talent alone, but they will absolutely beat the 8 seed on talent AND prejudicial officiating. theres no need to put forth extreme effort because the refs are sending you home anyway. knowing as an 8th seed that as a team you could have a great series but know for a fact before the series even starts that the refs are sending you home anyway, its better to take your chances with the ping pong balls. nobody in any situation likes to put forth max effort and have the powers that be make you fail just because. this scenario happens in virtually every workplace, its just that in the case of the nba, its nationally televised.

to truly discourage tanking, the 7 and 8 seeds need to believe that they have a legit chance, discounting talent, that they have a chance to advance in the playoffs. its the same as socialism. if there is no realistic chance of a reward for success then there is no extra effort put forth. you can never change that part of human nature. if a teams knows that they are going home because of league management/prejudicial officials, then that team is not going to put forth their best effort because its wasted effort and emotions.
Posted Thursday March 06, 2014, About: Barkley's unique solution for tanking
i just picked your comment to quote for no particular reason.

but heres the real deal:

1. many owners in all sports dont care about winning. the team is a status symbol or a hobby. thats just the way it is. you'll never change that.

2. if every owner cared passionately about winning the salaries and decisions would get even more stupid. reference: nets this year

3. not all the top teams want the number one pick anymore because most of the players being drafted are talented but unskilled and many are still in a child's body because they didnt stay in college long enough to develop physically and skill-wise. the smart teams let the loser teams draft players, waste their talent and then pick them up for fair salaries and then train these now adults to become skilled, fairly-priced players. reference: pacers, spurs, heat, lakers, etc.

4. there is a truly limited amount of impact players available. even if every team truly wanted to win, and did actually make good decisions, theres still going to be bad teams in the league. on every given night in the nba, half the teams have to lose. thats just a statistical fact.

noel is a one dimensional player who couldnt score if his life depended on it. embiid is better defensively already and is already unstoppable on offense. how is that "slighty" better?
Posted Saturday March 01, 2014, About: Hinkie leaves Sixers with nothing
its just amazing how two people can look at the same thing with two entirely different views.

i would trade basically the entire house for embiid. how could you even compare him to thabeet? thabeet couldnt score if he were the only player on the court.

theres no one player that can even touch embiid when he has the ball. the only reason this kids not averaging 25ppg is the fact that all 5 guys collapse on him when he has the ball. and he makes great passes out of the post. if theres just one or two guys guarding him its an automatic easy score. and then when he wants to he can just step out and drop a 3 ball.

and hes only been playing for 3 1/2 years and hes still a kid. give this kid another year in college and 3 months in the weight-room and hes the franchise.

randle? he looks good in the highlight reels but if you watch really closely all his big scoring games are against scrub team and hes surrounded with talent. i cant say if hell be good or bad but he seems like a less consistent larry johnson. parker and wiggen may be good eventually as well but both of them need at least one more year in college.

i really havent seen him play much and im not enamored with stats in general. stats need to be heavily weighted against context.

that being said, turner seems to be doing all the right things on the right progression time-table. his shooting percentage is ok so its not like hes chucking up 24 shots a game to get his points. and you never heard anything about him being a ball-hog or team detriment. i dont get it. i was really hoping that the bobcats would get him to boost our playoff chances.

and its hard to place anything on his defense either. its just a fact that theres no reason to attempt to play great defense during the regular season when the rest of your team is a defensive sieve. you waste a lot of energy for nothing, get banged up and then the other team just passes the ball to the other side for an open shot anyway.

there is only 4 players that have better overall stats this season than turner. lebron, durant, westbrook and i cant remember the other one. could have been love. thats heavy company for a guy on a team that is trying so hard to lose.

not going to work either way. boston would be incredibly stupid to take on 30 mil in salary AND jeopardize there shot at a high lottery pick after ainge tanking the team all year.

and rondo is my favorite nba player but he simply wont work in houston because of his poor free-throw shooting. it would be virtually impossible for the rockets to ever win a close game with howard and rondo on the floor at the end of close games.

Posted Friday February 14, 2014, About: Bucks would take Embiid No. 1
dont think hes soft as much as hes still just a kid. definitely hasn't fully matured physically yet. plus he plays full bore. maybe needs to learn to pace himself a little bit, but that will come with experience.

and the way it is in college when you're just too big for your opponents you just get hacked multiple times on every play. thats why shaq came out early. he couldnt really play b-ball. it was just hack-a-shaq from the tip-off.

if he comes out i hope the celts get him. but from an unbiased viewpoint he really needs to stay in college at least one, maybe even two more years to mature physically before he takes on the riggers of the nba.

.668 in the world series though. sox have spent gajillions on players who did nothing and papi only has a few good years left. i hope he doesnt get too greedy but you cant blame the man for wanting to cash in a little extra for that performance.
Posted Wednesday January 29, 2014, About: Ortiz floats 'time to move on'
youre missing the other components of the equation. the players are just pawns. its the agents and the union who drive up the contract.

the agents i believe make 10% of the contract. so when a contract goes from 50 mil to 60 mil the agent gets an additional 1 mil. for the player the difference between 50 mil and 60 mil is negligible after agent fees and taxes. but the agent going from 5 mil to 6 mil is a huge difference.

then there is the union. the union gets a cut of all the contracts and once a contract base goes up it basically locks in at that level. so the union wants contracts to be as high as possible across the board so they get a bigger permanent cut.

and in case you guys dont realize the power of the mlb union know this: the major league baseball players union is the best union in the world, literally.

retired football players get on average a $2500 a month retirement benefit. LOW-LEVEL MINIMALLY VESTED retired mlb players get a minimum of $22,000 PER MONTH in retirement benefits. thats a powerful union.
Posted Wednesday January 29, 2014, About: NFL keeping a close eye on Lynch
this whole thing is stupid.

on game day lynch wont be playing linebacker, safety or kicking field goals. why? because hes not good at those skills. they have other players who are good at those skills performing those tasks.

teams put the players in positions best suited to their skills and talents in an attempt to put their best performance out there for the fans to see.

so the nfl cant follow this logic? lynch is horrible at interviews. but there are plenty of other players who excel in that environment. the seahawks wont put lynch in a position to fail. so why would the nfl? stupidity? arrogance? power trip?

if the nfl wants super bowl press conferences to be productive and entertaining for the fans then they should put the players who have those skills in the position to showcase those skills.

it's pretty simple. in life its generally better to highlight and focus on your best and avoid what you are not good at.

football game or press conferences, the theory is the same.

nfl comes across as morons forcing someone out of their skill set publicly when there are plenty of other acceptable options.
