However, some people brought up a great point that this might make the rest of the team play more aggressively knowing that they can't count on Ovechkin's absurd goal-per-game contribution. When you consider the caliber of opponents in the SE division, a couple of games without Ovechkin might do the Caps some good.
And by the way, Chunkystools, does the name Marian Hossa bring back any memories?
Many stadiums cannot just have roofs added to them. That is a big construction project and it will only prevent precipitation from becoming a factor. To play a game in Toronto, New York, Chicago, etc. in January and February will make for terrible playing conditions. No player wants to play in sub-freezing temperatures and no fans will want to sit still for 2 hours in that kind of weather.
Some teams play in stadiums where adding a roof is impossible. No one is going to pay to put a roof on Qwest Field or RFK Stadium.
While MLS should strive to be as big as the EPL, Bundesliga, and other European leagues, changing the schedule will do exactly the opposite. Having to compete with the NBA, NFL, NHL, NCAA basketball and NCAA football is not a good idea. Sure, die hard fans will go see a game in freezing temperatures, but a terrible game day experience is no way to draw in new fans. I feel like having the MLS compete with the boring MLB is a much smarter business move. And despite what some people on this board think, the MLS is not followed anywhere near as close as the NBA and NHL. I wish it was, but it isn't.
And Charlie Weis's blood type is Jell-O
Forgot to mention the whole dealing of Nick Johnson thing and getting Adam Dunn back at first base where he belongs and away from the outfield. If they can finally get their bullpen situation figured out, he could be fielding a decent team at the start of next season.
Now take that hand and punch yourself in the face 38 times.
Strasburg will not play in the majors this year. He has to start out in the minors and work his way up. Even if he does so at a very fast pace, minor league baseball is over by the end of the month. That means that he won't get to pitch in September and he will not be ready for the jump to the bigs with only a few weeks of warm up. Remember, he hasn't pitched since May. They are better off saving him until next year. Plus, if they do finish last in the majors again, which looks less likely considering they are playing well now, they haven't ruined their chances of signing Bryce Harper next year. He has the devil as an agent too.
The Nationals have to think about what their competence as an organization (not talking about performance and stupid marketing gaffs) will look like if they give in to Boras' ridiculous demands or if they stand their ground. If they don't sign Strasburg, they might look like they aren't committed to building a winning franchise because they don't want to spend the money. On the other hand, they might look like a team that has some integrity and will not throw all rookie salaries out the window for future generations of draftees. They get the first and second picks next year and they won't have to throw $50mil at a kid who could easily throw out his arm.
One problem with this though. Next year's number one draft pick, Harper, has Boras as an agent too.
