Balsillie has always been a mavrick, even on the Pens purchase he hinted he wanted to move them if the arena deal fell through. Once he had a team he could have done what he wanted, ala Al Davis, Irsay, etc... There would be nothing to stop him from relocating, there's nothing in the NHL constitution.

Or Atlanta when they get that mess sorted out and immediately go on the market.....or Florida when the new guys decide to pull a Moyes and throw the keys on the table....or, well, you get the picture. I don't think it's in the budget to buy up all of the weak teams.
I hope Balsillie gets a team eventually but I don't blame the league for shutting him out. You can't come out and try to do an end around to get your way. Come in, smile, nod, say everything they want to hear then pull up the moving vans. The guy who bought the Grizzle did the same thing, said he wouldn't move the team, etc... and a few years later, he's in Memphis. Like that wasn't pre-determined. It's unfortunate that Balsillie's ego got in the way of a big deal (again).

Florida was just sold, well, Alan Cohen transfered a majority stake to two minority shareholders, basically ridding himself of the debt. If I'm not mistaken, Cohen owns the arena and makes his money there, so I doubt he'd want them to move and lost 40-odd dates a year.

Sounds like a smarter version of Balsille...."Yeah Gary, don't worry, I'll keep the team here...." 6 months later, get the moving vans to Quebec City

OMG I remember that show! But they filmed it at Copps Coliseum

The league approved the group right? I think Bettman had something to do with that. Approving an ownership group of 30+ members is virtually unheard of, and typically for good reason (See Atlanta Thrashers/Hawks situation). He also needed to protect the Canadian TV deals which would have severely been hurt by losing a 3rd Canadian team in such a short time. And the deadlines weren't set by the NHL, it was the ATB so it wasn't a case of Bettman trying to stonewall them for a guy in Houston. The ATB just wanted their money, so spell it out to me again how Nicols thwarted Bettman's dream of the Houston Oilers?

You're right, he didn't assemble the group in Edmonton, but it's laughable how you gloss over the fact that he gave them an opportunity to keep the team. You also seem to look the other way in regards to the Canadian assistance plan and currency equalization that was in place. Had it not been for that and expansion which pumped over $10M into the Oilers coffers during the 90's, they wouldn't have made it. When you're pretty much the smallest market in Canada (neck and neck with Ottawa) taking in .65 and paying a dollar, thats not a strong formula for sucess. They wouldn't have made it out of the decade! But I'm the idiot, just remember, at the end of the day Cal Nicols was given the OPPORTUNITY to come up with the money to keep the team in town. It would have been irresponsible not to have a plan B had that group not been able to raise the money. Contingency plans are part of a good business plan, FYI.

You're right about versus, but they came to the table with cash for the tv deal, something espn wasn't willing to do (or atleast not much of it). Coming out of the lockout they didn't want all of their eggs in the profit sharing ring, so they took upfront money from versus. At this point they really should revisit ESPN, versus hasn't caught on like they thought it would.

Who's talking about franchise value? We're talking about revenues and relevence.
Posted Sunday November 22, 2009, About: Phoenix to Quebec?
Everyone harps on about southern expansion but it's the owners who wanted the expansion fees in the 90's. All of thse expansion plans were in place before GB came on board, owners wanted a more national presence in order to secure national tv deals in the US (Which GB suceeded in doing with Fox). Besides, where else were they going to go? Who in Canada was going to step up with the money to get an expansion team and an arena to play in? Even Canadian teams that stayed and changed ownership were picked up by Americans (Habs and Canucks). Do you think the owners in Boston, Chicago, LA or Dallas were worried about what Columbus, Nashville, Minny or Atlanta would do to them? Were those teams going to take money out of their pockets, fans from their gate? No and No. They saw the expansion fees and the potential for tv money (which happenend with ABC). Before GB the NHL was barely a half billion dollar business, now it exceeds 2 billion. If you hate him, great you're entitiled to that, but don't paint the picture that he's ruined the game. Hindsight is 20/20

So he did nothing to keep them in town, huh? He didn't bow to the pressure from ESPN or Fox and put a team in one of the largest TV markets in the US? He's always been about giving a local group the chance to keep the team in town. He also could have let the Pens go to Portland, but he supported Lemieux's bid to keep it local when it was in bankruptcy court. It's so naive of people to think everything he does is wrong and bad, he's an employee of the owners at the end of the day. If a room full of millionaire and billionaires think he's doing ok, then who are you comment and act like you know better? Hindsight is 20/20. I think the league actually could use a new commissioner to inject some new blood and ideas into the game, but, atleast know all of the facts before you spout off about someone and their job performance.

They own the Montreal market, QC is about 140 miles away so they can't claim any territory rights. They'd be basically splitting the province. Even if they can't work something with RDS, who's to stop Sportsnet from starting a french language channel with a quebec city team as their main programing.
Posted Sunday November 22, 2009, About: Phoenix to Quebec?
we're talking 10 years ago about expansion fees.....and the cap is linked to revenues so i'm not sure what you're getting at about raising the minimum...some teams can barely afford the floor
Posted Sunday November 22, 2009, About: Phoenix to Quebec?
I dont care for Bettman, but, you can't deny what he's done for the game in Canada. Ask an Oilers fan how he feels about him, they were a whisker from being the Houston Oilers in 1994 had GB not helped recruit that consortium that bought and kept them in town. Ditto for Ottawa and Buffalo.

With Elvis and JFK sharing a pair of seats behind the leafs bench lol

But this would be a fantastic move, QC always supported the Nordiques, even when they were horrible in the early 90's. And RDS has hinted they'll give them a big tv deal that will rival the Habs deal.

With that attitude we wouldn't have the Ottawa Sens or Edmonton Oilers. He fought to keep those teams in their markets when the cdn dollar was at it's lowest and cities like KC, Portland and Houston were sniffing around. Funny how people forget the cdn equilization plan to protect teams against offer sheets and eseentially an early form of revenue sharing for those teams to deal with the gap in currency. And it was the owners not him who wanted the expansion in the 90's. That was worth about 10M to each owner in expansion fees, a handful of teams desperately needed that money and wanted to expand.

It was built with AHL in mind, not with a return of the NHL.
Posted Sunday November 22, 2009, About: Wilson running out of time with Leafs?
You're right, they only had one measley guy score more than 20....some guy named Bondra who led the league in scoring.....give it a rest man, next thing you're going to tell me is the Jack Adams should be renamed the John Brophy award because he made the playoffs with a few bad teams in the 80's...

Most wins by a US coach doesn't say much....pre 90's who was his competition, Herb Brooks?
