I'm personally in favor of setting a max payroll as long as it is coupled with a minimum. The big downside to this is that it is already difficult to find a player who spends his entire career with one team, and I think the fan of today suffers for that. It would only get worse, as a cap would force teams to operate just like NFL teams do -- your favorite player will end up getting cut by your favorite team because that team can't afford to pay him. Simple as that.
My dad grew up idolizing Mickey Mantle and rooting for lifetime Yankees such as Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford. Today, I'm almost in the minority because I can name three favorites who have always been Yankees -- Jeter, Posada, Rivera. Had it not been for the 4 rings in the late 90's, I'm not sure that would be the case. The baseball fan is ultimately the one who has suffered because of free agency, and will suffer further for a salary cap. Of course, I can't say that without recognizing the fact that players were long mistreated by teams before winning the right to free agency. I understand that, but you can't change the fact that your team will likely be different one year to the next.
You will always be criticized as the commissioner of a major sport. Sometimes it will be fair, sometimes it won't, but that doesn't change the fact that it comes with the territory, so stop whining about it.
When Torre managed the Yankees, he did his best to protect his players from all that goes with the Yankee Universe. Now that he's not their manager, I don't see this as a violation of trust or hurting his credibility in any way. It's not like he's slinging much in the way of mud or wild accusations...everything I've seen to date fits with Torre's public persona. Look at the vanilla comment about Clemmens and possible roid rage. All he says is that in retrospect, you wonder if there is any truth to that. How many of us have said the same?
I'm more tired of all of these millionaires trying to pretend they are still from "da hood". I know many of these guys grew up in rough conditions that I could never identify with, but c'mon....you can afford 3 or 4 Mercedes or BMW's or whatever and you live in a huge house with a personal chef and hire an entourage of people catering to your every whim. You may have grown up "hard", but you're far from it now, my friend.
Answer: Of course not.
This is a non-story. I'd hate it if I were an Indians fan right now, but I hate Dellucci for homering off Joba the other day. So whatever.
