As for the Hispanic population, I think that's because MLS only has tried to appeal to hispanics in 2 population bases, Chicago and LA (Chivas). Both teams have very strong support.
Atlanta is unique because it has a strong soccer culture AND has a huge hispanic/south American base. It means that they could have multiple markets to exploit and grow from. I think it's a lesser risk than a city like Philadelphia (lived 30 mins south for 10 years and never heard about soccer outside of the world cup).
This area has great football roots, from the Colombian, Argentinian and Brazilian pockets in Dunwoody, Marietta and Roswell to the huge Mexican section, in Cobb and Gwinnett Counties. There are soccer parks all over the place and they are filled with rec leagues. MLS Soccer would be a huge hit here.
That being said their are 4 reasons he probably didn't.
1. His side judge told him he botched the Abidal call
2. He saw Henry get jobbed when he did get taken down in the box the 1st game
3. He felt that the ball played the hand
4. He didn't want to be the one to decide the game.
The officiating in both games was terrible but Chelsea has no right to blame the referees. You refuse to play football at the Camp Nou and run the risk of this happening. If you had tried for an away goal you wouldn't have had to worry about this (Although theoretically Barca might have blown you out had you had the ballocks to play with them). Even still you have a 1 man advantage, 1 goal lead and instead of trying to play football you sit back in defense and just look for a counter punch. After the goal you managed to get a couple of corner kicks and some real chances. Conicidence? No because had you played that way the whole game you'd probably have won.
If you count on the referee helping you win the game 9 times out of 10 you lose. Chelsea hedged their bets and Barcelona gambled big and won. Real football won out.
I think we just all need to take a big bite of perspective. Cuahtemoc Blanco just reached 100 caps for Mexico at the age of 35 with 34 goals on the National team. David Beckham has 105 caps and for England and just 17 goals. Ronaldinho at 28 has 94 caps for Brasil and 36 goals.
Landon Donovan at age 26 has more caps than each one of them and has 36 goals. Obviously level of competition and other factors have to be taken into consideration, but he has a very accomplished resume in the International scene. Too many people are thinking about the 06 WC and overlooking the body of work of LD.

Not to be overly critical, but Messi doesn't come off the bench for Barca. He's a starter and he's better than not just most guys in the MLS, he's better than all of them.
I think the point is that Football is a team sport, NYRB are a terrible team. The Fire, Revloution, Dynamo don't have the talent of a Barca, but they are a better team and would have kept the score closer losing by maybe 2 goals instead of 4.

Perhaps you all should learn to read. This article came from the Charlotte Observer, not SI. Charlotte Observer is a newspaper which means that this article could have been written on Saturday before KB's latest win.

Dude are you serious?!? How about Ray Allen. How about Michael Redd. Stephen Jackson. There are plenty of blacks in the league that can shoot the 3 ball.
