I'm sure this horse has been beaten, but the bottom line is you don't have to be clutch in game 162 every year if your relief corps can hold onto the games you should have won ealrier in the season. Winning a pennant isn't about being clutch at the last minute every year. Good teams have it wrapped up most times by mid-September. The Mets easily could have won the division by 10 games this year. And even if they had won, do you really think that bullpen would survive against the other playoff temas? No. Any suggestion at trading the offensive core of this team is purely media-types looking for controversial positions to fan the flames.

Phillydave, it makes sense that you might not want to take the risk, but there have been others who have made it well past 40. To suggest that he'd be perfectly fine at age 37 but not at 38 is just speculation. It was more likely the fact that the Phillies didn't want to pay him what he wanted and thoughtt hat they had other options at a cheaper price.

References to the Phillies not offering the 4th year to Wagner make no sense unless they have some crystal ball that forsaw an injury three years into the future. Wagner has been a reliable, although not exactly Rivera-esque. Sure he makes you hold your breath for an inning, but with very few exceptions, most closers are not lights out every time. And compared to what the Mets have had over the last 5-10 years, he was reasonably effective.
