I agree...he won't get a title shot this year since he will have to wait for Maynard/Edgar 3 and then probably Pettis fighting for the title after that (granted he beats Guida), but I think it is possible within the next 2 years if he continues to win. He impressed the hell out of me last night by completely dominating Dunham, so he should get more top-level opponents after that performance.
I wouldn't call that first round a typical round of throwing punches and then completely gassing. He threw about 1000 punches going for the kill after he smelled blood. So if another HW wants to employ the strategy of getting tagged and then making Carwin throw 1000 punches and hoping that he gasses out, then good luck to them. Otherwise, the "Frankie Edgar" approach you speak of isn't very realistic since Carwin isn't going to pointlessly throw THAT many punches and gas himself out unless he again has his opponent down and hurt.
I agree about Lesnar's egregious standup being exposed in his last 2 fights, but what glaring hole can be easily exploited in Carwin's game? He simply shot his entire load in the first round and then gassed. His cardio is something that can be fixed, and I am sure he learned from the Lesnar fight about punching himself out.
Riiiiiiiiiight, only a "slightly better" accomplishment since Kimbo was also a UFC champion with wins over Herring, Mir, Couture, and Carwin. Excellent point (rolls eyes)!
Now I expect you to discredit each of Lesnar's wins in order to somehow justify your claims that Cain's win over Lesnar was only slightly more impressive than a win over Kimbo Slice would have been.
So Kenny Florian says that Overeem is a great fighter, possibly the best striker in the HW division (but he is not so sure), and that he is impressed that Overeem competed in and won the K-1 tournament...I agree with that assessment, and I am sure a lot of others do as well, but so what? I don't hear him say that Overeem should be ranked as the #1 MMA HW, so what point are you trying to make exactly with this clip?
Ok, I thought about it. In your hypothetical situation, I would hire the one with the extra classes if everything else were equal. Unfortunately, that doesn't help your argument since the analogy is horrible.
It should be more like this. There are two employees in the same company (MMA). Employee A has completed impressive projects and made quality deals (competed against and beaten top-level competition) for the company in the past 2 years, while Employee B has completed a few minor projects for the company (beaten some cans) and taken extra workshops outside of his job which haven't benefited or involved the company at all. Which employee should get a promotion?
Selecting Employee B would be as ludicrous as ranking The Reem at #1 in a ranking system that ranks according to wins and level of competition in just MMA fights.
You are obviously right...I can't see how anyone could seriously argue against what you are saying on this matter.
I have Overeem at the top of my personal list (based solely on whom I would place my money on the most), but in no way, shape, or form could he be ranked #1 on any official list for MMA due to his lack of top-level competition in recent years.
JDS destroyed Werdum head to head and then CONTINUED to destroy people. If he KO'd Werdum and then lost some fights and was inconsistent, I would say that you have a point. But that is not the case. Werdum beating Fedor was impressive, but it does not erase the fact that JDS destroyed him when they fought and then defeated everyone put in front of him in impressive fashion. JDS's head-to-head destruction of Werdum proves more to me than Werdum's win over a different fighter. Sorry. And if Werdum and JDS fought again, I see it going down the same way.
I'm sorry that it's beyond you to imagine Carwin beating Werdum. Do I think Werdum COULD win? Sure. But I envision a Carwin fist connecting with Werdum's head and then a KO/TKO. If you see it another way, that's fine. Guess we won't know until they fight, huh?
I don't have any hate for Werdum. I just think that he would lose to Overeem (today's version would pummel Werdum in my opinion), Cain, JDS (he already pummeled him), Fedor (I don't think Fedor would make the same overzealous mistake again), and Carwin (I think he would most likely KO Werdum). I would definitely have Werdum in the top 10, probably at 6 or 7. I have no clue how FIGHT could possibly have Werdum ahead of JDS.
Loved seeing Aoki eat that knee and get KOd...beautiful. And Overeem is an absolute monster. I think they need to update his weight...they had him listed at 242 and Duffee at 249. He dwarfed Duffee. I HOPE that he gets to fight top HWs ASAP!!!!!
I know Overeem hasn't beaten any significant HWs in MMA lately, but after watching him the past year or so in K-1 and MMA, I would pick him over any other HW due to his size, strength, and unquestionable skills. If he fought any of the top 10 HWs in the world right now, I can't imagine betting my money on anyone else, that's for sure.
As far as the top 5 go, my personal rankings (based solely on whom I think would win if they all fought each other and whom I would place my money on the most) would be:
1. Overeem 2. Cain 3. JDS 4. Fedor 5. Carwin
Again, those are just personal picks. I know Carwin lost to Lesnar because he shot his load in round 1 and had nothing left in the tank in round 2, but I think he is a more dangerous fighter. I know Werdum beat Fedor, but I personally think Fedor would beat him 8 out of 10 times.
I didn't really think that Rogan was disrespectful towards Garcia or off-target at all with his criticism of the judges. He said Garcia looks like he is throwing rocks, which is true (his punches do look wild), but he also added (I'm pretty sure) that he hits like a rock and his style has worked for him. At the end of the fight, he told the fans not to boo Garcia and that the decision wasn't his fault. His critique of the judges was exactly what I was thinking in my head, so I had no problem with it.
I think Jones murders both Franklin and Griffin...I wouldn't be too excited about either of those fights. Thiago Silva would be a better matchup. I also think it would be a good matchup if he were to fight Lil Nog if Lil Nog gets through Bader.
I thought the stoppage was fine. Matyushenko was not getting out of that position, and those were some vicious elbows that could have done some serious damage if he was allowed to keep going (compared with Roy's love tap punches).
IF he can beat Bader, Lil Nog would be an ideal next opponent. But whatever happens, Jones needs to fight a top-level LHW and get into the title mix. He has already completely destroyed mid-level LHWs like Bonnar, Hamill, Vera, and now Matyushenko, so it's definitely time. I don't want to see him fight another guy whom we know he will kill.
