Posted Tuesday October 14, 2008, About: Five candidates for Clemson job
I don't know who the best coach at CU would be. I do know that (1) Danny Ford's time has past and Tiger fans need to get over the notion that bringing him back would bring back a championship. Besides, he cheated like nobody's business and would get Clemson slapped with sanctions in no time. (2) Jim Grobe isn't going anywhere. Not right now at least. After last season's flirtations with Arkansas and Nebraska, he's committed to Wake and I seriously doubt he'd ever go to another ACC school if and when he were to go elsewhere. (3) Given the financial hole Bowden's contract extension puts them in, I doubt Clemson could afford Tuberville right now, unless he's really looking to escape Auburn before the hatchet falls. (4) I don't know that much about the culture at Michigan (never been there...just have watched them on TV), but I've read from numerous sources that RichRod's UM contract has another $4 million dollar buyout. Unless UM is already willing to fire him, which would be a lot more shocking than Bowden's departure, I can't see him choosing to leave to and going to Clemson even if he does have friends and business associates there. Clemson is a pretty strong football school. Not as strong as a lot of their supporters imagine, but still... Getting an up-and-comer like Kiffin or the TX assistant seems like the most logical path for them at this juncture.
Posted Sunday October 12, 2008, About: Fulmer ready for heat after loss
Very few coaches can get a team to the top and then maintain that. Coaches and programs run out of steam. Other teams catch up to them. Fulmer has had a good run at UT. If he can weather this storm, perhaps he can bring them up again (see Paterno, PSU). But, Vol fans are tough. They might not give him the opportunity to see if he has it in him to elevate the program again. Last year's Division championship was almost like a perfect storm. I don't think there were many people though at the end of the season that believed UT was the best team in that Division.
Posted Monday October 06, 2008, About: Schiano: I overestimated Rutgers talent
The amount of work, time, commitment, and good luck it takes to turn around a Rutgers, or a Duke, or a Vanderbilt is incredible. It doesn't always occur in a straight line shooting upwards. I have no doubt that Rutgers' team and fans are disappointed by this season's results thus far. But Schiano has brought them far. There's simply some slippage this year. I believe he has the intellegence and work ethic to get them back up again.
Posted Thursday September 25, 2008, About: Did Davis badmouth Shannon?
I'm not really into a lot of chest-thumping about the relative strength of conferences. From my vantage point, as a life-long WFU fan (and grad) and ACC fan, the ACC is clearly not on par in football with the SEC or Big 12. However, it's a heck of a lot better this year than the Big East and more competitive top to bottom than the PAC-10 (with the understanding that USC would probably beat any ACC team right now). The Big 10 is probably a little stronger, but not much. The MWC is intruiging this year, but I don't know enough about them to make an assessment, except that they seem to be better than the PAC-10 overall. While the ACC may be a bit down, several programs are solid and will be better again than they are this season (VT, Miami), several are building and are moving in a very positive direction (GT, UNC, and even Duke). I think the jury is still out on what it will take to get FSU back, get Clemson over the hump, and what decisions need to be made to get UVA and UMD relevant again. After suffering WFU games in the 1970s as a kid, I'm just glad to see the Deacs be so competitive consistently, and to still be moving in the right direction.
Posted Monday September 22, 2008, About: Wake Forest recruits Florida well
Grobe and his staff are to be commended, not only for winning games on the field, but also for learning how to recruit to WFU. FSU, UF, Miami, Georgia and others still get the pick of the lot of FL players. UNC and NCSU still get the most high visibility players in NC. But, WFU has learned how to get good student athletes to come to Winston-Salem. It's not always an easy sell!

Posted Sunday August 31, 2008, About: Upset Pitt coach on hot seat
I thought he was a poor coach with da Bears and was shocked when Miami hired him. Bad job there too. It's great that he can recruit. He needs to find some assistants then that can coach and let them have at it.
Posted Wednesday August 27, 2008, About: Marve's upset with Miami coach
I think Shannon is simply trying to ensure he has control over the team. That certainly has not always been the case at the U.
