Posted Saturday February 21, 2009, About: Notre Dame's new offensive coordinator is...
Even when it might not be the matter of this discussion, it is funny to see how everyone downplays ND 2009 schedule. It is obvious that nothing can be predicted from the previous season as CFB changes year to year but ND will play 7 teams with winning records (and yes that includes Nevada which finished 7-5 and played the Humanitarian Bowl -quite close game), a rebuilding Michigan (it is not ND fault that Michigan is going through an awful period), Purdue and then the "wonderful" adversaries from the "magnificent" Pac-10: Stanford, Wash, Wash St.
USC? They will open against a formidable oponent: San Jose St; they will play 6 teams with winning records and then they will face the "magnificent" Pac-10 foes: Ariz St, Wash, Wash St, UCLA and Stanford. That is a lot different! This is a "very difficult" schedule that a team aiming to be in the top 10 should face, no doubt. And I am sure that is the "advantage" of belonging to a conference... 6 "cupcakes" out of 12 games.
CW was hiring for his play-calling ability, shown during his first two years at ND. The amount of skilled players maturing in the ranks, the returning of few key players for a fith year should be enough to finish with 10 wins this season, maybe including a victory against USC in South Bend.

Whoever is thinking that one player turns around a team does not follow College football closely. Weis is an excellent recruiter and the team has been rebuilding for the past three years. Like a puzzle, players from "x" class can come and fit perfectly in the plan and hence the reason why ND pursued Te'o with so much emphasis. Now, Weis will have to prove that he can make all ND talent flourish in the field.

Urban Meyer will not coach in Notre Dame. He avoided the school when it was in need, what make all of you believe that suddenly he is "in love" with Notre Dame; he does not deserve the position. If Charlie were to leave today, with the four classes he has recruited, any coach will be in the NC discussion by his second year.

Wow! I am sorry to be late to this discussion and to notice that lame ND team can attract so much passion! Having someone even taking the time to find a ND logo with "SUCK" embedded on is amazing!
Let???s go to some facts. Gruden will not coach ND not because he is a patsy or any other pejorative you like but because he is a not too successful NFL coach, period. His winning record is barely above .500 and he would have to go through the same process Weis (please note that is with a single ???s??? at the end) have gone through. If his Super Bowl ring is the only meaningful thing he has accomplished as a coach, then Weis has the advantage of having four rings (granted, as assistant coach and offensive coordinator), of having visited two BCS bowls during his first two years of tenure, of having been in the head coach position through the worst two classes ever recruited by the Irish, and to be able to recruit with success in spite of all the failures. Indeed, I believe it is this entire rumor mill what is causing 2009 recruiting class to falter.
Being black-american had nothing to do with Ty dismissal. Following two relatively good recruiting classes, Ty failed to recruit as expected. Unfortunately, his last two recruiting classes were not bad, were dismal as it became evident during seasons 2007 and 2008. Facing awful times, and not too much confidence from the coaching staff, Ty had to be dismissed. As we learned later, he did not fare well at UW so, like it or not, the move was right for Notre Dame.
Weis will not leave Notre Dame unless 2009 season is not BCS caliber. I beg to differ to anyone who thinks that 2007 and 2008 seasons were ???unexpected??? and that Notre Dame debacle was due exclusively to lack of coaching. The fact that Urban Meyer declined his ???dream job??? and Pete Carroll's comments indicated that the college football world was well aware of the lack of depth on the team. The upperclassmen for these ugly seasons were the completely unheralded last two Ty recruiting classes. 2008 7-6 record was accomplished in the shoulders of the underclassmen. Tide is turning and Weis will have no excuse to have less than 10 victories next season. His replacement will have to come from his staff (Tenuta) or from the college world.
Posted Friday December 26, 2008, About: Meyer tries to explain Notre Dame dream
All that are no less than lame excuses. He knew he was not going to fare any better than Weis as recruiting is an issue and the depth chart was depleted. I think that he saw what was coming: two years with recruiting classes #12 and #20 as upperclassmen, and two years with recruting classes #34 and #40 as upperclassmen. He was not really interested in going through what Weis is going because of the lack of recruits from the past. By next year, ND will have four nice recruiting classes and, suddenly, Meyer states that ND is "his dream job." Give me a break!
Posted Sunday November 30, 2008, About: Notre Dame still landing LA-area recruits
ND has recruited well but only since 2006 and not before except for the 2003 Ty Willingham class, which included Brady Quinn, Tom Z and company. The only reason I believe ND will grant Charlie one more year to prove himself is that the WORST ever recruiting class (#40 by Rivals100.com) is graduating this year, and next year ND depth chart will be composed exclusively by Charlie's recruits. There has to be some radical changes in the way the team is preparing and in the coaching staff and I believe that, if Charlie stays, John Latina would have to be replaced as the WORST unit of the team and what I believe is at the center of the futile offensive unit is the "inoffensive" line.

I hate to look back when the team looks so terribly bad, but I would love to remind you that from 1983 through 1993, an LA Times sports writer suggested that the only way for USC to avoid losing to ND was not to include the Irish in their schedule. I have no difficulty reading something to the contrary from a sports writer in Indiana nowadays. Close games? The majority of them have been close and exciting games but there has been a 37-3 (not too much different than today's score), 27-6 with six coming by field goals if I remember correctly. ND had beaten USC by shout-out 8 times and allowing them 7 points or less another 13 times. The largest margin? A 51-0 victory of Notre Dame over USC in 1966.
ND is down now but it will not be for a long time. Good recruits are coming and whoever coaches ND next year will have a great deal of talent and, therefore, success
Posted Sunday November 30, 2008, About: Blowout could be end for Weis
While I do not understand why Charlie was given the kind of contract he got, one thing is clear: Notre Dame recruiting was dismal from the Bovie era and until the actual first Charlie recrutiing class. The first Ty recruiting class included most of the Juniors and Seniors that Charlie coached during his first two years. That class was a bright spot in the dark ages of ND recruiting. Recruiting is what is going to keep Charlie one more year as a Head Coach for the Irish.
Arrogance or not, the coach has been humbled and ND will come back with vengeance
Posted Sunday November 30, 2008, About: Blowout could be end for Weis
At this low point of the season, the safest thing for ND as a team would be not to accept a bowl bid. Why? To finish with 98 total offensive yards? Offensively this team sucks big time and truly do not deserve to play any bowl whatsoever.
ND needs to return next year and train full speed from Spring to fall and be better prepared, mentally and physically, to win.
Posted Saturday November 29, 2008, About: Blowout could be end for Weis
It seems to me that ND will not fire Charlie, not this year. I agree with your comment but the Head Coach will have one more year to prove himself mainly due to his great ability to recruit. Trashing Charlie with stupid rumors about the "video-gate" New England incident is idiotic. Offensive coordinators are just a piece of the whole machinery and when the remainder of the pieces remain in place, teams do not change, no matter which offensive coordinator you are talking about: Chow, Weis, etc.
Now, Charlie will have to make some decisions to correct deficiencies. What is the biggest and ugliest part of the team: Offensive line. These guys simply do not exist: do not protect, do not pick-up blitzes, do not open running lanes, do not block assignments. They are simply big (6'-4" to 6'-8", 302-330 lb) dummies. If Charlie is not fired, some fresh assistant coaches faces might be necessary, mainly in the offensive side, to bring the best to the excellent recruiting classes ND has been able to have during the past three years.
Posted Wednesday November 19, 2008, About: Theismann weighs in on Weis
Sandy, the reason for Ty dismissal from ND was not his skin color. Check Rival100.com recruiting classes from ND during Ty tenure: 24, 12, 32 and 40. What can you do with this classes, mainly the last two? Finish 3-9 and maybe 7-5. Now, what about Charlie recruiting class, you may ask? Well, they are 8, 8, 2 and maybe 8 again. Charlie took the first two classes from Ty to BCS bowls, survived the ugliest season for any ND team ever, and takes this year team to a minor bowl. Not bad at all, I think. Is Charlie going to be forgiven for another season like the current season? No way! He has to produce next year a season no less than 10-2 in order to keep his job.
Posted Wednesday November 12, 2008, About: Weis in trouble at Notre Dame?
Reading all the comments to this column is evident how much is passion and how little is knowledge. It is my opinion that college foot-ball greatness is based in recruits and ability to make them excel.
Someone writes that Weis did an excellent work with Ty's players implying that they were excellent players. Well, they were not, they just were players with two years experience. Ty's recruiting classes, including that combined with Charlie in 2005, were ranked #24, #12, #32. and #40 by Rivals.com. The highest recruit from Ty's 3rd class was a 4-star player that vanished into the unknown. Dare anyone to quote name, position and contribution to the team. Seeing this trend, who in his right mind would not have fired Ty? Race has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with it.
Now, Charlie took over and carried ND to two bowl games, with the first two recruit classes from Ty. Let's just mention here that Brady Quinn met Charlie at the end of his sophomore year and then blossomed. Any one can try to guess what would happen the next two years with the last Ty class and the Ty/Charlie combined class? You are right, a 3-9 and maybe a 6-6 seasons. It was not too difficult to see. You cannot carry any football team to greatness in the shoulders of recruiting classes ranked #24 and #40. The next recruiting classes (currently juniors, sophomores and freshmen) were #8, #8, and #2, and they are still unproven and unexperienced. The current recruiting class is #9 so far and it includes highly recruited players such as RB Cierre Wood (Rivals.com #3 RB) and WR Shaquelle Evans (Rivals.com #12WR) directly from USC backyard. So, at least from the recruiting point of view, Weis is better coach than Ty for ND.
Weis should have the opportunity to coach his first two full classes (currently sophomores and juniors) next year and then we can certainly evaluate his full ability to coach. The personal at hand, for the past two seasons, was in no way, shape or form made to be of any significance beyond a 3-9 or a 6-6 maybe 7-5 record.

Finally a reasonable comment, thanks MrMiyagiJr. Who in the world cares if Weis would love to die due to obesity issues. That is his personal life and if he does not care (which I doubt) then nobody should care.
His initial stance on college football has kicked him in between the eyes more than once. He did not expect to deal with issues not related to schematics but to performance that are exclusive of college football. His worst experience, ND 2007 team.
Now, MSU v. ND game. If anyone would take the time to review the statistics, you can easily see how this ND team held Ringer to a 3.75 yards per carry almost midway through the 4th quarter. The game, at the start of that period was 13-7. In effect, ND OL was not (again), able to open running lanes, receivers ran the wrong routes, and Clausen made mistakes. Putting all that together lead to a total of 4 lost opportunities to score (2 missed FG's, 1 interception, 1 fumble) and one TD gift to MSU via an interception inside ND 30-yard line. The scheme was adjusted and work (6 offensive series with a gain of at least 20 yards), the execution falter at crucial moments. At least ND is not playing Eastern Washington or Idaho Vandals or WSU (which by the way might be beaten by the Aztecs) or any other lowly team. ND team will prove, towards the end of the season, that will regain some respect.
Posted Tuesday September 16, 2008, About: Weis 'worked up' before game
The game of foot ball is simple: a team either dominates or take advantage of the other team. Last year ND team would had not been able to produce any turnovers and most likely they would had not been able to take advantage of them if they would had ocurred. This year in this game ND score 7 points out of three Mich mishaps; stopped two potential scores out of two more. It has two great offensive series resulting in another 14 points. In the second half, held Mich to less than 2.5 yards per carry and no scores. More importantly, having Mich the same 7 defensive front as last year, this time they were unable to sack Clausen not even once. Suffice to say that the final score was 35-17.

What I think is the truth of the matter is that Charlie first, full recruit class is this year junior class and it is not bad. Before making any predictions, I would like to see the team playing in East Lansing next week. That game may show better what is this team made of and what could be real possibilities. USC game is a game every one is looking forward to but I do not believe USC is as good as the pollsters wanted to be, they have not played any team worthed of respect as I easily see how Ohio State was overrated, even since they played Ohio...
Posted Monday September 01, 2008, About: Notre Dame's Weis watching, waiting
I am far from critizing that ND has an easier schedule this year. I indeed think that any team that schedule games against I-AA teams should lose any consideration for a BCS bowl. It is annoying hearing guys like Mark May critizing ND when Ohio St plays Youngstown or Penn State plays Coastal Carolina or Texas Tech plays EWU. C'mon! ND played last year, with a group of enthisiastic freshmen, 10 bowl bound teams.
So, no I am not critizing ND. I just think this season is comparable to that of Ohio St, Florida, Auburn. The stature of ND will be seen in games against Mich, Mich St and USC. I would like for the Irish to beat USC this year. That would be sweet
Posted Monday September 01, 2008, About: Notre Dame's Weis watching, waiting
It is appaling to see how a discussion about FB turns into name-calling. Disgreaceful and distastful.
Now, to FB. Notre Dame is going through a bad strech like the USC teams from 1956-1961 and, more recently, from 1996-2001. Can you remember the 13 game losing streak against ND? What short memory some of you guys have!
Even when Charlie has denied it, ND is in a rebuilding process. The previous to last recruiting class from Ty and the combined Ty/Charlie recruiting class of 2005 were awful and 2007 is the result of that failure. Recruiting classes are improving gradually and we will see ND back in the top 20 no later than the next couple of years.
This year is part of the rebuilding process and, thanks to an easier schedule, it will allow ND to go back to a bowl game and, hopefully, to win their first bowl game in about 10 years. This draught of winning bowls have to finish soon.
