He wasn't focused and he didn't work hard under all conditions. He might play well in NY but he was dogging it (not blocking, false starts, drops) for the Browns. They had almost no choice but to get rid of him.
#2- tribe wasn't winning this year. They have the best catching prospect in baseball already who will be ready in 2011 if not sometime in 2010 in Carlos Santana, obtained in the Blake deal last year. They would at BEST have had Victor Martinez for one more year and then let him walk anyway. Instead they got Masterson who is a versatile pitcher and cheap, for more than 1 year, as well as some other guys who might pan out, might not. Still, it was a win for the Indians considering the alternative is to let Victor walk and get nothing (or 2 draft picks which won't pay off for 3+ yrs)
#3- You want the Tribe to KEEP all these guys, even not considering the salaries? Garko, maybe you keep him. Keep Lee for 1 more year or get 4 guys for 5-6 years each including at least 3 highly rated prospects? VMart for 1 year or 3 guys for 5-6 years each? Francisco was like Franklin Gutierrez... just too crappy of an OBP for an AL outfielder, esp with Choo/Sizemore/LaPorta looking like the Tribe OF for a while.
They NEED pitching. They can hit fine. If they get rid of Victor, Garko, and Francisco, they will still be a well above average offensive team, even with Peralta not hitting for much power and Sizemore having a terrible year. You have to fix pitching with young guys and hope that they pan out because they can't afford the CC and Lee type guys when they hit free agency. Maybe they sold prematurely on Cliff Lee but they got a better set of prospects than you think I bet.
