Posted Friday September 18, 2009, About: Umpire confesses he might have missed pitch
The contemporary catcher's belief that he must frame almost every pitch costs more strike calls than it saves. When you see the glove move - sometimes several inches - you think "he missed it," and you're quicker to call it a ball. There is a time and place for the time-honored skill of framing, but it will never replace the ability to sell a pitch by holding the glove solid, teady and clearly in the zone.

Put Soto in the deal and MAYBE you got something.
Posted Friday October 17, 2008, About: Yankees, Braves chasing Peavy
So the "new" Padres have begun. When Robber Baron John Moores brought in Sandy Alderson, this is where he saw the team going - selling off developed players like peaking commodities to stockpile undeveloped players, the best of whom will be part of a continuing cycle of selling so that the Padres (like the model A's of Alderson's past) will be a tantalizing comer - causing fans to hope, with little prospect of paying off. Add to this the fact that Peavy has had the courage to question management's overall direction, and once again we see a pattern of getting rid of anyone who doesn't "buy-in" to the Moores/Alderson party line. Bet on the Pads getting rid of Kahlil Greene, too, and anyone else that strays from their vanilla strategy. This team has little soul left, and none at all if Jake goes!

Who is this team? It was ten years ago that the Padres met the Yankees in the World Series. The 2008 Friars draw pale comparisons to the '98 line-up. From catcher to right field, the current crop is trying to play over their heads in a ballpark that intimidates them every day. Who are they? I don't think they know themselves. Maybe Theo took the real Padres to Boston with him?
Posted Thursday September 11, 2008, About: Will Padres fire Bud Black?
Harry is a good guy, a players manager, but he is also part of a larger Padres problem - they settle for sub-par performances from players who know they'll get a pat on the back and an atta' boy, thanks for trying when they make an error, or hit a first pitch double-play ball after the pitcher has thrown six balls in a row - instead of getting the swift kick they deserve! Players play to the level of expectation, and SD seems to expect to fail.
