Looks like he timed this substitution perfectly....
I don't get why they are in so much trouble.... unless it's because of his other franchises.
They only really have two big contracts:
- Michael Young 5 yrs/80 mil
- Kevin Millwood 5 yrs/60 mil
The entire payroll isn't that high at $68 mil....
Some sportswriter was desperate to fill some print space.
Granted the Sox most likely wouldn't be giving up a MLB-ready SP and OF to get Wagner, like they did for Gas Can, but you should still be careful what you wish for.
If I were Minaya, I send Wagner with a bow on top on the next thing smoking bound for Boston and not ask for anything in return. I would even consider throwing in a little money.
As usual, the NY papers don't have a clue.
Rocco Baldelli's 2009:
AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB/SO BA/OBP/SLG
43 4 10 1 1 1 4 2/15 .233/.267/.372
It's not like the voting totals aren't tampered with anyways, right?
This guy only manages Once-In-A-Decade Players, and drives up the prices for guys that most of the time aren't worth it.
I agree with those of you that say don't go to MLB games. Send a message to owners that it is not okay to pass expenses on to the fans instead of putting a dent in your profits. Fans shouldn't pay anything over $50 for a ticket.... let them know the market has changed.
But the Sox will most likely re-sign Bay. He fits perfectly.... and he'll be much cheaper.
The Sox scored the second most runs in the AL last season, so the fact that Tek can't hit anymore is pretty pointless. A healthy Lowell and Papi will more than make up for it. Tek brings much more to the table in the pitching game anyways....
Should be an outstanding three team race in the AL East between the Rays, Yanks and Sox!!
But seriously, this has no business being on T&R. Not really sports related....
Add that on top of the usual Yanks/Sox bad blood.
I think it's a good that Theo doesn't get sentimental about players. Take Pedro Martinez for instance. Guy was the backbone of the Boston rotation for years. The Sox offered him what they thought he was worth, and he bolted out of town.... saying the Sox didn't show him any respect. Four years and many stints on the DL later, Theo came out on top of that one....
The Sox would be stupid to empty out the cupboard for this guy. If they wanted to give away 5 or 6 players to get one, I'd rather it be Hanley Ramirez or Josh Hamilton.
This is just a case of the Globe being bored and cooking something up to take up printspace.
