OK . . . I may give you this . . . it forces him to be more patient . . . BUT it doesn't make him better overall. My guess is he is improved as well in 2014; almost by default with a full year now under his belt.

But IMO DG gives Michigan the best chance to win and Michigan's success or failure in 2014 will be mainly on the O-line.

Generally, though, regarding DG . . . I guess we just have to agree to disagree on this one.

It wasn't on the 2-point conversion. Pressure from Bosa on the right forced Gardner to release the ball earlier than he would have liked and he forced it to Dileo. If he would have been mobile, my guess is would have escaped that pressure in either direction. If you watch the replay, middle left was open for Gardner to take the ball himself to end zone. Also Gallon was breaking out of the pack to the sideline by the bunch and if he would have been able to escape pressure there would have been an opportunity there.

An immobile Gardner is not a better Gardner.

I disagree with your conclusions regarding Hoke's 1st recruiting class. He had little more than 1 month to recruit. You really want to credit that class to Hoke?!? If yes, you're delusional. Right now most of Hoke's recruits are committed months before signing day.

In regard to your question within your quote above . . .
Hate to keep repeating myself but it's mainly the O-line. This year it looks like there will be the 3 newbies from last year in the middle + a RS Freshmen and a sophomore. It's a HUGE question mark.

Offensive skill positions are NOT the problem.

The "D" regressed last year but I expect that to turnaround this year. Last year injuries hurt the "D" line especially up the middle / there wasn't great depth there. The D-backs also underperformed with the vets not stepping up and the youth being youth.

This will be interesting to see but I expect the "D" to be much improved. Injured players are back along the D-line and depth has been added there. There are also highly recruited players making waves in spring camp and Jabrill Peppers arriving in the fall.

I don't expect a great record this year but see improvement.

2015 will be Hoke's "make or break" year.

Looking at it another way . . . they lost 4 games by a total of 11 points. It works both ways when you look at Michigan's 2013.

His 3rd full recruiting class is just arriving. Not making excuses but that's the truth. As Tin Man said, with Carr's senior recruits and RichRod's, they went 11-2. Then the downturn started.

DR certainly delayed the implementation of the main offense for Hoke and company. However, the least of my worries is Devin Gardner. His abilities are just fine for this offense. He may still have the "yips" (personally I don't think he will) but he played just fine vs. tOSU (on a broken foot BTW).

There are certainly questions regarding the coaching along the offensive line (IMO). Other schools have youth along their offensive lines and seem to survive just fine. If anything, that will be the determining factor for this year. Can they pull a respectable O-line together with all these "highly recruited" RS freshmen and Sophomores?? That's the biggest question to me.

As I previously stated, I will be very surprised if Hoke is shown the door after 2014.

BTW . . . to all you DG haters out there . . . they put up stat during the spring scrimmage . . . DG had 14 TDs and 3 interceptions during B1G play last year.

Please remember, prior to last year, DG only started 3 games; prior to which he was playing WR. He had a rough start to the year but finished strong. River, you as an OSU fan, should know this best.

He has now started 15 games . . . the best is yet to come.

River I have always disagreed with you on this point that you always make a point of making in regard to Gardner.

DG doesn't change the Michigan offense, he enhances it. His skills are an add-on, not a take away.

Do you actually think UM would be better off with a sophomore that has played 1 game?!?

Now there has been times when his decision making has come into question but he's the best Michigan has at this moment and to quote Herm Edwards . . . "You play to win the game."

You think DG looked bad (with that O-line) last year . . . what do you think a less mobile Shane Morris would have looked like. Not to mention his confidence would have been destroyed.

I'll repeat . . . if that O-line doesn't improve dramatically, Michigan is looking at another disappointing year (no championship+no major bowl).

Frankly, my thought is that their only hope is that the defense carries the day the first half of the year and throughout the year the offense consistently improves. Similar to MSU's year last year. MSU's offense stunk the first 4-5 games of the year and improved to the point that it could do some damage later.

More like wrong O-line period. Unless that O-line improves greatly, it's going to be a very average year 8-5, 9-4 at best.

Not sure the HC is wrong but my guess is unless the team is a complete disaster this year (similar to last), he will get one more year. It's the AD's guy . . . he's not going to out Hoke until he gets a full opportunity to fail or succeed. Next year (2015) will be his 5th year.

Took a look . . . unfortunate and hilarious at the same time.

Hopefully, the "kids" learned what not to do in that situation.

A small parallel there between that situation and the verbal "spats" some get into on these threads. ;-)

I believe that will be 2015. Sorry fellow UM fans.

Still too young on the O-line. Games at MSU + at OSU will be very tough for this group. [at ND will also be a challenge] Although, I do believe the "D" will be much improved.

The one thing UM has going is an experienced QB (as does MSU and OSU, however).

Improvement is a must for Hoke. Respectable showings vs the aforementioned, I would think, is also a must.

Maybe . . . but their Top 3 teams are pretty darn good.

It was Minnesota that lost money on the sale of alcohol, I believe. They over-did the security and under-did the access to alcohol.

Little known factoid . . . Minnesota is 2nd to Wisconsin in alcoholics per capita.

Would have been a great BCS Championship game . . . Nebraska vs Michigan. This was the year before the BCS started. Michigan went to the 1998 Rose Bowl and Nebraska the Orange.

Hey River,

Agree with everything you say except the recruiting. I think Michigan had 16 schollies available. If he had the normal 23-25, they would've been in the Top 10. But I am not a big fan of recruiting rankings any way. Let's see what happens on the field.

I have confidence in Hoke but his future is definitely "murkier". I don't see it happening but he could be gone after next year with a disaster similar to last year.

I expect Gardner to thrive next year assuming he is healthy. Morris will be a capable backup and future star. Bellamy returns after an ACL tear in the spring of 2013.

Gardner couldn't move and he panicked as Bosa beat his man in front of him. If Gardner was mobile (not mobile because of broken foot), the play would've been successful. Also, if O-line would've done its job, it would've been successful. Gallon was breaking open to the sideline through the mess behind Dileo. Also, Gardner could've scored by running if he would've turned to the goal line off left guard/tackle; but, again, Gardner had a broken foot.

Probably a decent call; but considering Gardner's lack of mobility, it probably was not a successful.
