Downside of boatloads of young talent is that often it comes with a significant lack of plate discipline. Moyer is perfect against teams like that (appearance against ARI two nights ago is also a perfect example).

Not only that, but I wonder if the incentives in Pedro's deal don't cancel out the savings from Moyer's incentives.

I suspect there might be a spot start for him in Miami in the future...

Madson hasn't given up a run since that Thursday night in Chicago. I think he's alright.

Sunshine- re: Phils' outfield. Is it really any worse than the Mets? Burrell vs. Alou...even (I say even because Alou is guaranteed to miss significant time with an injury, and you just traded your young depth in Milledge and Gomez). Victorino vs. Beltran- Offense, Beltran...defense Victorino. Werth/Jenkins vs. Church- Even. Not like the Mets have the early '90's Pirates outfield in Shea. Offensively, edge Philly and it's not close.

Sunshine- Only thing is that Moyer is our ONLY old starter. Hamels is 24, Myers 27, Kendrick 23 and Eaton just hit 30 (if they go with C. Durbin, I think he's 28 and Carrasco is 24). Meanwhile, no one knows how old Duque and Pedro are, and Perez has been around a while (sixth or seventh season, I believe). It's a small argument in Philly's favor, but I'll say this...anyone who says the Phils' rotation is better than the Mets is not someone I'm going to engage in conversation. In fact, I might have to hit them with a heavy blunt object.

Oh...and on the topic of facts that Mets fans don't seem to be aware of...the Phillies were almost as proficient on the road as they were at home last season. They did win more at home, but most teams do. However, they scored 450 runs at home...and 442 on the road. Their BA was .012 better at home (.280 vs. .268). About the only large disparity was they hit 19 more home runs at home (116 to 97), and I will GRANT that their park lends to more home runs. It does not, however, lend itself to a better average, since the outfielders are more drawn in than in any other park. Bigger park= better average. Smaller park= more home runs. It's simple physics.

Why do I keep hearing "45-year old #2 (or #3)". Moyer MIGHT be our #4. Hamels, Myers, Kendrick, C. Durbin, Moyer/Carrasco/Eaton.
Posted Monday October 29, 2007, About: Will Vikings deal for McNabb?
I don't think there's a way in hell that the Eagles trade McNabb for a 2nd. They might for multiple picks, including a future 1st, but a single pick for McNabb? Not bloody likely.

This sounds like one of those Eskin rumors in Philly.

Seems like stupidtity is contagious around here.

1. Utley was a third baseman when he was drafted, but they thought they had Rolen locked up for years so they converted him to a 2B. People forget this.

2. Atkins would look good in Philly, but it's hard to fathom the Phils having enough in terms of young talent to trade for him. It would probably take something along the lines of Kendrick and Jaramillo to pull that off.

3. A-Rod's got two choices...New York or Boston. They're the only ones who will match his price. Anaheim has the cash, but Moreno (I think?) has said he isn't going to spend a quarter of his team's salary on one player, and that's what it would take.

4. aaronstevens- go away.

5. ...americandream- nice catch on Tulowitzki. I was looking at the picture thinking "I thought Atkins was bigger".
Posted Wednesday August 08, 2007, About: McNabb: Time is now for Super Bowl
Did I just read someone pull out the Music City Miracle as a reason why Phillips is a winner? Because he "should have" won ONE playoff game? Was it a foregone conclusion that if Buffalo won that week, they would have beaten Indy (I think)? Wade Phillips is a mediocre coach...but Dallas should still make the playoffs on talent alone. He may be what keeps them from getting to the Super Bowl, however.

Bigsocks- To answer your question, I would point out that the people who take steroids aren???t just instantly better baseball players. They have to work out. The steroids help them recover from the workout more quickly so they can do it again. Steroids don???t make you stronger. They don???t make you hit better. That???s the big myth about steroids. Everyone assumes that once you stick the needle in **** the muscles just start to swell like they were on Miracle-Gro. And once you???ve got this new over-built body, you have to adjust to it by taking just as much batting practice as the light-hitting second baseman in your example.

It???s all about choices. Steroids weren???t against baseball???s rules until after the 2003 season. If the stories about the clubhouse attendants are to be believed, everyone had the same opportunity to juice up, and a large number of players did just that. Those that chose not to and still succeeded are to be applauded, but it???s not like they weren???t still using amphetamines and other ???supplements??? to improve their games. I actually have more respect for the players that used steroids than I do for the Pete Roses of the world. Steroid users were attempting to become better baseball players. Inevitably, this would help their teams win games. Whether we like it or not, isn???t that the goal? To win games? Pete Rose, on the other hand, bet on the game, and I???m not entirely convinced he ONLY bet on his own team to win. That, my friends, is the true stain on baseball. Not the people who strived to improve by any means necessary.
Posted Wednesday June 06, 2007, About: Kings to trade Artest or Bibby
Knick fan needs to calm down...you've got NOTHING to offer the Kings except MAYBE David Lee. None of your contracts are anywhere near expiring, and you've got no talent outside of Lee and Ariza (whose contract is so overloaded it makes no sense).

And Artest to the Nuggets? With 'Melo and Iverson already there? Are you stoned? If that happened, could I petition the league to change their name to the Bengals?
Posted Wednesday May 09, 2007, About: QB draft pick shocks McNabb
Donovan McNabb is a franchise-type quarterback. When he's healthy, he's in the top 5 in the league. I won't argue about this. I would take Brady, Manning and Brees over McNabb, but that's about it. Now for the big question...how many teams start a QB who actually helped his team win the Super Bowl recently? Brad Johnson's out of a job, Trent Dilfer is backing up in San Francisco, and Big Ben was HORRIBLE in the Steelers' win. That leaves Brady and Manning.

McNabb has had one playoff game in which he actually got to play with a true #1 receiver, and his defense completely let him down in that game. Yes, he threw three picks and by no means did he have a GOOD game, but if the defense steps up ONE TIME they win the game.

You don't trade franchise quarterbacks, not unless you're pretty sure his backup is a franchise quarterback too (like the Niners dropping Montana when they had Young). Jeff Garcia is a 38-year old who MIGHT have two years left. Kolb is AT LEAST two years away from starting. When you've got a guy who's among the best in the game, you HANG ON THEM!.
Posted Tuesday April 24, 2007, About: Do Eagles need young QB? Well ...
Questions...

How are we going to get Turner with an early 2nd round pick when we don't have one? Do you have a trade with someone early in the 2nd? Besides...Brian Leonard will be around in the late 2nd, so we grab him and party afterwards.

Did you call Greg Lewis, Jason Avant and Hank Baskett "potentially great"? If they can make it all the way up to "okay to good", I'll be ECSTATIC.

The main positions of need are linebacker (to prevent any possibility of the words "Dhani Jones" and "starter" from being in the same sentence), safety (because Dawkins isn't getting any younger), wideout (because quantity doesn't necessarily mean quality. After Reggie Brown...who's #2? Lewis? Baskett? Johnson? Kill me, please) and defensive end (because Kearse can't stay on the field and Howard can't beat a double team).
