He then took over an awful Chiefs team and they were a dominant team for many years. He left and they were a team always just outside the playoffs, until another great coach took over.
Washington shouldn't even count. He wasn't given an honest shot.
We then go to San Diego. A 5-11 team prior to his arrival. Marty assembles a great coaching staff in Cam Cameron and Wade Phillips and turns them into a consistently dominant team. He leaves, they have one year where they slide a fair bit in regular season but it's deemed a success because they manage to claw their way through two playoff games (one of which they probably would've had a bye in place of under Marty).
I think it's far more likely that Marty has consistently had teams that he is able to make appear much better than they are.
Jon Gruden: Went on to coach Tampa to a Superbowl over the Raiders
Bill Callahan: Went on to coach Nebraska into the ground.
Art Shell: Is Art Shell. He'd been passed over for years and had no business coaching.
Norv Turner: Went on to coach San Diego into the ground. Still doing it as I type.
One guy ended his career in Oakland... Where are these "so many others"?
It was a successful Rumplestiltskin reference. I laughed pretty good at that one.
biminator: the man has no personal integrity. How can you attack it?
Personally, I think the Raiders job would be great if you're trying to make a name for yourself. You get prime air time. Everyone assumes it's Al's fault whenever things go wrong and if you succeed you'll look like a hero. Just look at the guys that have been turfed so far. Jon Gruden (traded for draft picks to a team in a position to win the Superbowl), Bill Callahan (got a college job with a respected program), Art Shell (It's Art Shell.. come on.), Norv Turner (got a shot with one of the best teams on paper in the NFL.. Though he's managed to make them look like garbage) & Lane Kiffin (Does anyone honestly expect him not to get a serious shot at a major college program?)
Offer Toomer a 3 year deal, allowing time for Manningham to develop and see if either Smith or Hixon can pass him on the depth chart.
Butler can go unless he wants to come back for reasonable money. I'd say the same for Webster.
Also, can't help but laugh seeing the little sponsored links at the bottom showing Lions fans having IQs of 114 vs. Giants fans at 97. I guess Matt Millen became a Giants fan after being fired. If his drafting is representative of his IQ, he'd be lucky to hit double digits.
