Have you not paid any attention to Soriano this year? He is Top 10 in HR and RBI in the N.L. With 19 and 61, respectively (maybe 11th in RBI, but close) and he is hitting around .280.. The Cubs will pay probably around $30 million of his remaining $44 million owed. Is a guy who is "on pace" to hit .280 with 35HR and 110RBI a bad player at $7 million/per? No, the Giants would be lucky to have that. Also, Soriano is (believe it or not) a mentor to a lot of the younger (mostly latin-American) players, including 2-time All-Star (and 2011 NL hits leader at 21 years old) Starlin Castro (who lived at Soriano's house). I have been down on this guy, but in reality at 36 (in the post steroid era) he is doing damn good at the plate and showing why a 9 year contract (not for the ridiculous money that he is getting paid, but length of contract wise) is not a terrible signing. His defense has been average this year too.. Plus, the Cubs don't consider it an albatross this year. They can afford it and aren't missing out on any free agents because they aren't going to sign anyone anyway. Even if they did, .280 with 35HR and 110RBI is probably worth $10 plus million.
When will Daryl Morey and Kevin McHale get called out for their B.S. Both the Lin and Asik deal are completely against the spirit of the new C.B.A. McHale ruined one team for over a decade with his "shrewd moves" as G.M of Money. Now, he goes to Houston, and they are basically going to trade everyone for Dwight Howard and the garbage off of Orlando, then sign Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin to contracts that make them 2 of the highest paid players on the NBA in 2014-2015. What are they doing? They have 3 very good rookies coming in. Dragic had an unbelievable year for them. They don't want to commit $15 million to Omer Asik EVER. Especially if they get (and keep) Howard and pay him $20 million a year. $35 million to 2 guys who play the same position, both known for defense. The fact that Asik would be even in the same ballpark in salary as Dwight is a joke. What idiots. What would Dwight like about Houston so much if Turk, another actual Turk (Asik), J. Rich, Duhon, and Lin were his teammates?
That's 100% true. Look, if the Rangers are offering him significantly less, then it's a different story. But, being in an environment that is "safe" is very important for someone in recovery. It's A.A. 101, dude. Plus, it would be more Dr. Drew than Dr. Phil.
Agreed. Orlando should move him to Houston for their 3 picks (if it's not too late) and call it a day. At this point, if Howard has successfully driven the price the Magic could receive back into the ground, just bench him for the entire season (or until the trade deadline) so you send a message that you can't be called liars and "black mailers". Once again, an NBA team gets dragged through the mud by trying to cater to a crybaby NBA prima Donna. When will they learn? Even the Bulls refused to treat their dynasty players with that much "respect", but Jordan (after 4 rings) received the still richest consecutive 1 year contracts in NBA history for trusting in the organization.
Bulls will stay as far away from Dwight as possible. I don't want him here. He can take his train wreck of an attitude somewhere else. LeBron looks like a damn public relations genius (especially because he led his team to an NBA title) compared to this friggin' moron.
Soriano would be a decent DH. His salary is ridiculous, but his production isn't non-existent and he seems to be a good leader for the Dominican/south American guys. Starlin Castro lives in his guest house and he says he's like a big brother to him. I just have a problem with the Cubs paying more than 50% of his salary to play somewhere else. Unless we get a very good prospect in return, paying a guy to hit 30 homers and 80 RBI's for a different team seems ridiculous to me.
That whole Tribune sale situation was terrible. Hendry had a classic case where "moral hazard" came into effect. Hendry was spending money that he knew he and his ownership would not be responsible for. The Cubs were legit contenders for a few years, although they were unable to win a playoff game. Now, we have to put up with a couple years of mediocrity. But, for the first time in a long time the Cubs have some young talent that they have developed from their system that are going to be a part of the club for a long time. It's hard though when the White Sox across town are contending now (and are always sniffing the playoffs) and have studs from their farm system contributing as well (Chris Sale, Ramirez, Viciedo) along with their high priced vets (Konerko, Peavy, Dunn). Speaking of Dunn, if the Cubs would have signed him instead of Milton Bradley I don't think we would be talking about the Cubs the same way.
