Majority of the time yes, vast majority no. Considering Tiger has over a 25% winning percentage betting the field certainly isn't a sure thing. Out of all his records winning every fourth time he plays is what blows me away and CLEARLY separates Tiger from any other golfer in history. Once he passes 18 majors he will be hands down considered the greatest of all time - even Nicklaus has conceded that. And when he doesn't win he's always at least in the top-10. That's one reason he's so bullet-proof from scrutiny by the media - even his "poor performances" are better than 90% of the rest fo the PGA Tour. And for the past few years he was able to play at an elite level with one bad leg! C'mon!
The thing that impresses me the most about Tiger is that his motor is ALWAYS in high gear. Doesn't matter if he's 10 strokes back he's still believes he's got a chance and NEVER bags a tournament. He's the not only the hardest working player but also the hardest grinder - add in superior talent and you have a once in a lifetime athlete.
That's a tough comparison since golf is an individual sport and most other sports are team related. One could argue that until Nadal came along Roger Federer has dominated pro tennis like Tiger has dominated golf.
I do think there are times when younger players get intimidated and fold when playing against Tiger. I could go back and research all of the final round pairings with Tiger and easily pick the golfers who "crapped their pants". This year I can think of Sean O'Hair at Arnie's tourney that Tiger won with that putt on 18. Tiger really didn't come back and win that tourney - O'Hair choked it up on Sunday. A lot of players get caught-up in trying to play shot for shot with Tiger versus just playing the course. Rocco at last year's US Open is a good example - he knew he couldn't go blow for blow against Tiger and just played his game and did great. Not too mention trying to play with Tiger on Sunday for the first time when the galleries are moving around all the time isn't easy and does rattle younger players.
Very true and yet another factor that we can thank Mr. Woods for. Not many tour pros incorporated fitness into their games until Tiger came along - with the exception of Gary Player. This is where the term "athlete" come into play and this was non-existent in golf until the Tiger era. You can't really be considered an athlete if you're fat and out of shape can you?
12-years later and Tiger still has that same mind-set and he has single handedly changed the face of golf. Add in today's hyper-media.... internet, iPhones, ESPN and golf is now on a different level. Call it a perfect storm but every player on the PGA tour should be shaking Tiger's hand thanking him for making them millionaires.
Definitely not underrated in my opinion.
Tiger the best ever? Technically not until he passes 18-majors which we all know he's going to do. I like to also look at overall winning percentage when comparing eras.
Tiger - 28% / Nicklaus - 15% / Snead - 16%.
Golf did have a "faithful" following pre-Tiger but golf DID NOT have the excitement nor the global following since he burst on to the scene. Tiger was really the first true athlete to play on the PGA - add in exanded media and the firery fist pumps and next thing you know people are tuning in on Sunday afternoons just to see what how he's doing. He's really the first golfer that 's actually been able to "move the meter" as far as TV ratings go not too mention PGA tour prize money increased 10-fold since Tiger has been around.
That said, I believe all that prize money has made the average PGA Tour pro soft. There are too many PGA golfers that are content with top-10 finishes knowing they'll easily earn over million dollars for the season and retain their card. Finish 2nd or 3rd and you're easily banking $350K - $500K which is way more than Nicklaus earned in several seasons on Tour. Back in the early days and even in the 70's and 80's you HAD to finish in the top-10 or even win if you wanted to make a lot of money.
Care to make a wager on that prediction? So you don't think Tiger's gonna win 5 more majors? He's only 33 years old and still has top 10 finishes with his B-game less than 12-months from major knee reconstruction. It's pretty amazing that he's even playing at this level so quickly after knee surgery. His driver has always been sporadic but we all know what's going to happen once Tiger gets his putter working again. I hope you're not making too many wagers on that predicition. If so we'll be seeing you in the poor house in about 3-4 years when he passes 18 majors. I love to hear comments like this from Tiger haters because he ALWAYS makes you fools eat your words. LOL!
I disagree - Jones medles too much and is a control freak which will clash with Shannahan who demands full control of the team. Jones was the primary reason both Johnson and Parcells left. The last person Shannahan is going to work for is an eogotistical owner that will not allow him to make ALL of the decisions.
Snyder on the other hand will simply sit back with his fat checkbook ready and willing to acquire anybody Shannahan wants. Kind of like Snyder did with Gibbs.
First, the O-Line works as a UNIT, not as five individual players. Those who have actually played football know this.... fantasy football geeks will never understand. Dockery and Peters never developed chemistry nor did any of the Bills O-line that's why they sucked.... and continue to suck. It's not a cooincedence that the Bill's entire left side of their O-Line is now gone. Chalk that up to poor coaching fools! Oh yeah, and good luck with the T.O. experiment... LOL! You'll now see Dockery playing a lot better now that he's back where he started.... next to Samuels and the Skins. Hopefully their O-Line can hold-up for all 17-games in 2009.... not for 8-games in 2008 before disintegrating.
Second, who gives a crap about how many Pro-Bowlers you have when you're team hasn't won a playoff games in OVER A DECADE! Typical dumba** Cowboys fan! The last time I checked you didn't get a ring for having Pro-Bowl players. Has there EVER been an NFL team in recent memory with so much potential yet disappoints each and every year? I'm sorry.... good job on all of those Pro Bowlers. LOL!
