Posted Tuesday January 06, 2009, About: Scouts: Tebow an NFL star--or a bust
I don't think anyone can say for sure whether Tebow will be a superstar or a dud. Success in the NFL is a bit of a crap shoot. But what I can say is that when a player doesn't have as much pure talent, character and work ethic can make a great deal of difference. Factor in the company someone keeps, and you can see patterns. I think that no one can question Tebow's character or heart. He may not have the strongest arm, may not read defenses that well, and may not run as well as a Vick or Young, but I think that these deficiencies can be somewhat offset by his determination to succeed. I don't think he will reach the level of a Tom Brady, but I think that he can achieve some modest success at the next level. I suspect he will be better suited in certain roles - maybe the short yardage, third down kind of guy. He will probably have a short career, and then go on to become an AD or something ultimately. And get married and raise lots of perfect kids.
Posted Sunday January 04, 2009, About: Carroll: Sanchez needs clear head for NFL decision
Pete Carroll went up in my estimation by his comment. I think that one good game does not a great quarterback make (Vince Young - remember how far his star has fallen! You can argue that Vince has many good games, and there were multiple warning signs that the kid was not ready in terms of maturity, but it didn't help that his game against USC elevated his star status to the point that I think expectations became very unrealistic). I think Pete Carroll was subtly saying that he didn't think Sanchez should make the jump, and I agree. There is a big adjustment between that glorious moment of winning and the harsh reality of what it takes to make a successful transition to the pros. Sanchez was too inconsistent this season. He needs at least another year as a starter. If you look at the guys who make it, most of them spend some time warming the bench, and quite frankly, most of them have to be more emotionally mature with good support systems. I actually don't know much of how mature Sanchez is - in the few interviews that I have seen, he seems pretty level-headed - but I think that it definitely won't hurt him to stay in college.
Posted Sunday November 30, 2008, About: Jaguar's friend stabbed, killed
Booze, testosterone, drugs, and throw in a few chicks who get off on having guys fighting over them . . dangerous combination. I could see that one coming from a mile away. Anyway, it isn't football news. I am sorry for that guy, just as I am sorry for every life lost because of stupidity, but it only merits news because the guy happens to know a football player who was probably sound asleep when the event happened. How many unnamed and unknown people die on the streets, in clubs, or wherever, and nothing is ever said about them?
It is a crazy and dangerous world we live in. I'd rather back down from some nut spoiling for a fight, be called a coward for it, but still be alive than dead because of misplaced bravado or ego.
Posted Friday November 21, 2008, About: Notre Dame coordinator to interview with Huskies
I have to say that I think the shameful treatment of Ty Willingham by Notre Dame has its roots in multiple factors . I think that Notre Dame, as I have said before, lives in the past and tries to reconnect with that past and their glory days by wanting alumni who can relate to that past. I think that we can probably agree that Ty was not their first choice, but they probably thought that he was a good coach who could potentially bring a winning record back with the added plus of being a minority, which I think they saw as being a publicity stunt. I think that there were no higher motives in the latter - winning comes first before the color of your skin or the quality of your character.A lot of publicity was generated by ND hiring a minority - though I still wonder why it is such a big deal and why the color of one's skin must always be brought up because it is such a non-issue. . . but I digress. I don't think that ND fired Ty because he was black - I think he wasn't doing what they wanted, and someone that they wanted more became available. Ty has taken the high road over this, and I am not surprised at all since he has always been a classy guy. His players may agree that he might not be the best coach at winning, but they all respect and admire him tremendously as a good man.

As for Washington, it is a bad job. They have a bad team and they won't be good for a long time. They need someone who has patience with young players and can harness that incredible talent of Jake Locker. The program needs to have patience as well, and accept several more bad seasons. ANd the fans need to just realize that they need to support the guy they bring on and not call for his head if they don't win right away, which they won't. Look at UCLA. Everyone said that Ricky Neuweasel would turn that place around right away. Well, that hasn't happened either. But I think it will.
Posted Thursday November 20, 2008, About: Tennessee looking at OSU's Riley
I highly doubt that Mike Riley would even entertain an offer from UTenn, though I guess that nothing would surprise me. The prior posts from members of BeaverNation are probably pretty correct. Mike likes Corvallis, and he has a pretty good gig. The undying loyalty of the Corvallis natives for Dennis Erickson is finally dying down, and most are developing a steady but grudging respect for Mike. He does a good job with what he has- which is not usually blue chippers but regular guys who have been overlooked by most other teams, particularly those spectacularly bedecked fowls from Eugene. Why leave when you have a winning record in bowl games in a college town that really is a great place for you and your family? And for what - the constant scrutiny of a program like Tennessee? I doubt it. Anyway, it isn't a good fit. Tennessee wouldn't take the risk.
Posted Sunday November 16, 2008, About: Theismann weighs in on Weis
I am not a Notre Dame fan - I have to admit that I think their heyday has long since passed, and they are living large solely on the basis of past glory. As others have commented, I agree with Kirk Herbstreit's comment on Gameday. I think that the Irish faithful do have unrealistic expectations, and the blame for past performances cannot be placed solely upon the shoulders of the coach. Notre Dame is not a top 10 football team and is nowhere in the class of the USC, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, etc. . .Unless they play softer shedules, they just aren't going to have a better record. That said, I think there is a lot of unnecessary vilification of Ty Willingham. The guy is not a great coach, I agree, but as a man he is a class act and doesn't deserve the level of vitriol directed towards him. Memories are short and fans are fickle - remember his first season when he was hailed as the Savior and Second Coming? Charlie Weis is getting less of such treatment, but he should be regarded in far harsher terms simply because the guy has so much more talent and support from his AD that his team should be doing better. And he is also incredibly arrogant without any reason to be so. That may be unfair to judge the guy based upon my perception of him, but I don't have much else upon which to base an opinion except that supercilious expression that always adorns his face, his overwhelming arrrogance, and poor record as a coach.
