Defense has been terrible for a couple of years now and can not be blamed on DA. Kobe stopped playing defense three years ago, and that lets everybody on the team, except MWP, know that they don't have to play defense any more. I have to agree with this post. Although Kobe is great, he has really hindered the Lakers in the last couple of years. And although he is supposedly the superstar, Lakers don't win his 5th 'ship without Gasol and MWP who saved his A55 several time during those playoffs, never more than in game seven against Boston when he managed to go 6 for 24 and the Lakers still came back to win.

Howland should have been fired a year ago, or last summer at the latest. He has lost it as a coach, if he ever had it to begin with. Can't disregard his three straight final fours, but those teams had some amazing talent on them and his teams have greatly under achieved ever since, not to mention the article about the team's problem in last year's SI.

I think you are missing something. In what positive parameter is he a top 5 player, at the present? Certainly not in true shooting percentage, or in making the players around him better. He is top five in shots attempted, and probably top one in BAD shots attempted. He has been great (but not as great as he has been made out to be), but he is not any more. His only (slim) chance of winning a championship is if he lets Nash run the show as much as possible.
