I tend to agree with The New Vols. In his statement Fauria described himself as "a good guy, a fun-loving guy" as though to justify whatever he did as good-hearted fun. He also said he wanted a fresh start and didn't want to be under a microscope and "not be myself".
jps2323 comments as though Fauria is a friend or relative, and maybe he is a good kid. But even good kids get stupid sometimes, and whatever he did may be excusable at most other schools. Without more info, all we know is that the kid paid a big price for something he did, but was it justified?
There are plenty of high-quality academic programs that Notre Dame could compare to, but Stanford is a bit out of your reach. My son had athletic offers from many schools, but only Stanford required prospects to first be accepted by the school of admissions before an athletic scholarship could be tendered. That included offers from ND, but not Duke, who I've been told has requirements similar to Stanford. Again, ND is a fine school academically, just not as fine as you would like to think.
On a T&R thread the other day it was reported by ND that Fauria would not be enrolled for the summer or fall. That sounds more like citizenship than academics, or it could be a serious family problem which is why he is transferring close to home.
Besides McCoy, Bradford, and Tebow, Terrelle Pryor, Daryll Clark, Jevan Snead, Todd Reesing, and Zac Robinson are as just likely to have Heisman years as Clausen. And that's just the QB's.
I think you're letting one game in Hawaii put stars in your eyes. For Clausen to get the hype you're looking for, ND would have to win them all. They say anything's possible, but reality suggests even IF Clausen has a good year in 2009, he MIGHT be a frontrunner for 2010.
And as for better quarterbacks, besides the obvious 3 and Locker, there's Jevan Snead, Daryll Clark, Terrelle Pryor, Todd Reesing and Zac Robinson who should have outstanding seasons or at least demonstrate outstanding talent, depending on which criteria you use. If any others step up, your boy Clausen will have a hard time breaking the top ten of 2009 QBs.
And that's best case scenario. If ND's opponents don't look as bad as Hawaii last year, all your dreams go up in smoke and Clausen will probably be the goat.
It's not their tradition that keeps folks interested because tradition is just memories that eventually fade. ND remains interesting because their indy status is unique in CFB, and when that's gone, so will be the conceit that makes the rest of us love or hate them.
Gariboy- This is a direct quote. Sounds like the second coming of Klee Irwin (et al). I guess he didn't like the answers he got on the other thread so he decided to dump on this one.
Whatever would a USC fan be jealous of regarding Notre Lame? That USC has beat ND 7 in a row? That ND has only one top-ten finish in the last 15 years? That the great Weis is large and in charge? Perhaps it's ND's #21 ranked recruiting class.
You dreamers are putting way too much stock in your last win against #2 in the WAC.
As the only BCS school not playing in a conference Notre Dame has some great rivalries, but those games mean nothing to conference standings of the teams they play. ND can lose any two games and still be guaranteed a BCS bowl if they're ranked #8 or better. Texas Tech only lost one game this year and were automatically out of the BCS.
I don't care about the NBC deal, if enough mackeral snappers stay tuned, they deserve their own TV deal. But I resent the special treatment by the BCS just so ND can cling to the arrogant and archaic notion they are "America's team" and too good for a conference. Nothing personal, but I hope they stay weak long enough to be forced to apply to the Big East or Big 10.
I acknowledge there is a lot of unsolicited and irrational contempt directed at Notre Dame. But I think some of the acrimony for the Irish on this website are people - who otherwise would be neutral - reacting to one prolific, degenerate, conceited ND fan. In a sense, the General's wailing about ND haters becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
