Zito's epic sucking at 126/7 has led every pitcher to believe that if they pitch better than Zito *has pitched since signing his contract* they deserve as much or more. This ignores the context that a) Zito was signed excessively to begin with (more in years than money IMO), b) is not paid to be a third starter (obviously) and c) got so bad so completely that it's an outlier in the general group of "what to expect". (with addendum d- he was 29 when he signed the contract of his doom, as opposed to Lowe.)
Posted Monday November 24, 2008, About: Angels may affect Yankees' Sabathia deal
I get the feeling the NY tabloids make things up just to see what happens. (tongue in cheek.) It will be a good test of CC's professionalism if he does sign with the Yankees for the money. When you don't really want to be in a work situation or transfer to a city you don't want to live in but do so for a job, it takes a good deal of good work ethic to excel, as opposed to being in a city/job you actually do want, even if there's more money involved.
Posted Thursday November 20, 2008, About: Source: Giants to bid on Sabathia
It's pretty serious buzz, if only buzz ... the Giants won't try to match any Yankees offer, but columnists and bloggers have been putting out stories (see Yahoo , for example) that CC may be reluctant to join the Yankees at any price other than absurdtastic. Maybe he just doesn't like the vibe? In any case, the Giants are not a small-revenue team, and can actually afford to spend up to 250 million dollars on two starting pitchers. The question is, where is the bat going to come from? CC and Furcal on top of Zito and Rowand can be done (heheh, image); but CC + Furcal/shortstop + Texeira? Nukem (sic) can authorize going over $100 mil, but should he for 2009? In any case, I'm still sticking to "no contracts over 5 years to anybody".
