More likely, you'll see some up-and-coming coordinator like a Mike Zimmer come along and sign up for the rebuilding project there. Unless of course, the current staff sticks around after the season.
They need a GM first, don't they?
Falling back to earth in year #2, he guides those same Jerks to a 4-12. Huh? What happened? The same pundits went quiet and it was an apparent aberration.
The toast of the town in '08, they were flying high until Mr. Favre had his arm injury and that was that. They were on fumes and Mangini had no answer so they finished 9-7.
Moral is: Mangini took a decent team to where it should have gone and then coaching 'his' team, they hit bottom. A free agent spending spree got them in better shape, but it wasn't quite good enough.
On to Cleveland. This team, in all honesty, was in bad shape when Eric Mangini arrived. So not only do you see the roster in yet further turmoil, the front office is now as well. If Mr. Lerner was looking for change, well, he sure got it.
Did Mangini create the bad situation in Cleveland? No, he did not. Did he take a bad situation and make it completely horrible? It appears that he did. This is likely his last head coaching job in the NFL.
Ask any Patriot player and just about any NFL player and they will tell you that you do your talking on the field and say what needs to be said by your performance. Did jason Taylor say anything? No, he never would because he has class and he respects his opponent. I respect Jason Taylor and have absolutely zero respect for Porter.
Mr. Lerner is probably a great guy and fan of his team, but doesn't understand professional football. Hiring the coach, then a GM and also had a third cap guy really set them up for problems. No one was in control and certainly no one is now.
I don't know jack about running a professional sports franchise, but really, all you have to do is look around the league and you can see which teams are contenders each and every season and then study them, understand them and finally emulate them. Find the right people and put them in a position to succeed. Maybe they will and maybe they won't, but if your foundation is sound, then you know exactly where you have a problem. In Cleveland, there is no foundation.
Now, you can blame Mangini, ok, but the reality is, he is a border-line coordinator, acceptable position coach and an incompetent head coach. He doesn't have the skills, whether it's planning, managing his staff, managing the players, whatever. He fined a player earlier this season $1,700 for taking a bottle of water from a hotel room - and that my friends is not positive reinforcement.
If Mr. Lerner brings in Ernie Accorsi to oversee the hiring of a legitimate staff - GM, Head Coach, et al, maybe they can start to put the pieces together for a successful franchise.
While we're at it, once Eric Mangini is relieved of his duties, the next move should be to put Derek Anderson on waivers. Neither of them is doing anything to help that football team and never will.
They fired the wrong guy.
Eric Mangini, much like Romeo Crennel before him are coordinators at best and that's really an unknown because they were coordinators in a good system with one of the all-time best defensive minds in the game. They were products of their system. The only difference was Romeo was a good guy and Mangini had only one year of experience before getting the Jets job, which by the way, was a fiasco unto itself. Mangini is not only bad at what he does, he's also a jerk.
Mr. Lerner wasn't paying attention and of course, now he's well, just paying.
It's a shame for the Brown's fans because that town has a good history of football and the team that is being fielded today is one that any opponent can count on for a much-needed 'W'.
It's really a shame because Cleveland is a great and storied football town and deserves better than this. It really starts with the owner, like what 'KC Guy' mentioned when Mr. Lerner hired the coach before hiring the general manager. I've never heard of that before.
Getting down to basics, Eric Mangini, much like Romeo Crennel before him were never more than coordinators and Mangini only had experience at that position for one season in N. E. anyway. Romeo was a good guy, but not a head coach, while Mangini can't even be called that (good guy). Belichick is really the de facto defensive coordinator in any case as it is. This mess really falls on Mr. Lerner, he caused it and only he can fix it, but it won't be quick and it won't be easy. It also won't be cheap.
Something about 'shades of Ryan Leaf...' or something to that effect.
What was it about Mangini that attracted the good Mr. Lerner? Great interview? Come on, was he not paying attention in New York? He had the one 10-6 year and the other two were not noteworthy by any stretch, so did he really think that Mr. Mangini would fare better in a situation that required much more work? That's wishful thinking at it's best, but a luxury that even multi-millionaires can't afford.
With the situation as it is, it won't get any better. This year, next year, it doesn't matter. It's best for Josh Cribbs that they don't give him an extension so he can go play somewhere else.
The real issues at quarterback (they don't actually have one) and now the defensive situation, which coincides with their decimated secondary are now taking it's toll. Expect more stories to come from all kinds of odd angles as the vultures start circling around the potential carcass.
By the way, when I come back it'll be no more 'Mr. Nice Guy'.
Let's face it, his hoodiness must have done the math and if it came up to bringing someone else on, they would do it. I mean, it's not like he give's a rats' ass what us earthlings think. Bet he's not reading these columns for ideas, either.
Besides, if someone comes in, then someone goes out and who would that be? Mayo still counts and he should if he's out 6-8 weeks.
Broken jaw, strangulation, damaged office furniture. Wonder what kind of punishment that will bring?
I'm thinking that the strangulation thing is not good. It just sounds kinda bad.
