that may be true, but this board isn't Alabama, and the things you're supposedly defending against, haven't been said here....it's about context.

and for the record, I haven't seen any comments in here about Bama being the only school to have lunatic fans, or anyone trying to paint all Bama fans in a negative light.

then we're good here...
Posted Thursday February 17, 2011, About: 130 Year Old Oaks on Toomer's Corner Poisoned
is that context in an attempt to justify or defend?

you don't think giving examples of Auburn doing things to Bama is defending it? Then we have a different understanding of that term.

you entirely missed the point of this post, which wasn't whether or not you had to scour, but that your examples are irrelevant.

you should take your fellow Bama friends advice on this one...

well said.

I think I heard about that. I must say, sometimes we (myself included) take this stuff too seriously. I would never even consider killing a man, because of this football affiliation, but I know that even I have gone too far before over a football game.

I'm sure right now Joe is scouring the interwebs of examples of Auburn fans doing terrible things to Bama, or some story confirming the rolling of the trees when Bryant died, but none of it will justify this. I get it, it's a heated rivalry, my team is involved in one too, but when one side goes too far, just condemn it and move on.

I'm sure they have. I know that it was standard practice at Florida, for fraternitys to have their pledges do stuff to FSU. This stuff happens, but there is a line, and poisoning the oaks, crosses that line. Even graphiti can be painted over, though I don't condone it.

again, humorous prank. I'm sure that it riled up the Bama folk, but put a piece of fabric over a statue is harmless, and pretty funny.

who knows....there's a lunatic fringe to every fanbase. I know we've got em.

Rolling it when he retired is humorous, and in a way, even a compliment to Bear...I think we can all agree that college students behave like morons sometimes, especially in groups, which is why the party thing doesn't surprise me. I don't condone it, but I'm not shocked by it either.

How do you know it happened? I mean, if Auburn students that were actually attending the school at the time say it didn't happen, why do you assume it happened? Personally I would tend to believe the people that were actually there, versus the fans of an arch rival that weren't. Whether it happened or not, is still not justification for the killing of the trees. Bryant died almost 30 years ago, and I'm supposed to believe that's the justification for destroying a famed landmark? Also, Auburn fans didn't burn 28-27 into the grass at Alabama, they planted seed so that it grew differently than the grass around it....that's a humorous prank.

here's another one....

"I was at Auburn when the great Bear Bryant died. Roll Toomer???s Corner? Where did you get THAT? I remember black ribbons and wreaths everywhere and there was a caravan of Auburnites who attended the memorial service for this wonderful coach. He was an institution and we were all saddened by his passing."

I'm curious to know if the rolling of Toomer's corner when Bryant died, even happened? I've seen and heard several people who claim that it's not even true. Take this guy for instance...

"Celebration of Bear Bryant's death at Toomer's Corner? I can tell you two things. One, it never happened at Toomer's or anywhere else in town. Two, there was nothing to celebrate. Bryant had already retired. He lost his last Iron Bowl to Pat Dye. The football power in the state was already changing toward Auburn. The Bryant era was already over. There was no reason to celebrate his death, and we didn't. I was in school at Auburn at the time and the mood was sombre and respectful, but there was no sense of relief, no sense of vindictiveness. Auburn football was on its way up and Bryant's death had nothing to do with it."

whether is really happened or not, is largely irrelevant, because it was almost 30 years ago, but I find it strange that all of these people are talking about an event that many who actually attended the school, claim never happened.

gotta love the "but he started it" defense. Why am I not surprised?

riiiight, Saban's a humanitarian...I was interested in how schools word the scholarship, and what sort of provisions are in that contract, so I looked it up. Here is an excerpt from the University of Washington's athletic scholarship contract, which pertains to all student athletes.

"Conditions that MAY cause your athletic grant to be reduced or canceled:
1. Rendering yourself ineligible for intercollegiate competition by:
a. Failing to make satisfactory academic progress in your course of study;
b. Using illegal drugs;
c. Failing to pay University financial obligations; or
d. Violating written team rules as defined by the head coach.
2. Misrepresenting any information on the admission application, financial aid agreement,
Letter of Intent, or NCAA Student-Athlete Statement.
3. Engaging in misconduct and being placed on probation by the regular student disciplinary
authority, which prohibits participation in athletics.
4. Voluntarily withdrawing at any time from the team that awarded your athletic grant-inaid.

Conditions that cannot cause the reduction or cancellation of your athletic grant-in-aid DURING
the academic year:
??? Illness or injury which prevents participation.
??? Athletic ability, performance, or contribution to a team???s success.

apparently speculation, and someone not being quoted now passes as "facts". Also, I'm a little confused as to why an OU fan, would be defending this practice so vehemently. OU had a big class last year, but they also lost a ton of players. I've never really heard of OU being a team associated with the practice of oversigning, but I guess you think they should start huh?

I would like to see Muschamp change the culture in Gainesville when it comes to that stuff. I may buy Meyer's story about second chances, and wanting whats best for the kid, but far too often than resulted in a black eye for the University, and in players obviously not afraid of the potential consequences of their actions.
