Tribute to Troy's Comments

Posted Tuesday March 18, 2014, About: Baylor adds Incarnate Word to football schedule
First game of the season for the last 5 years:
2013: BS vs Washington, UF vs Pitt
2012: BS vs Michigan St, UF vs Murray St
2011: BS vs Georgia, UF vs Louisiana-Monroe
2010: BS vs Virginia Tech, UF vs Samford
2009: BS vs Oregon, UF vs Miami
Certainly UF played a much tougher conference schedule, but for the games they got to choose, Boise shows some sack not scheduling a patsy to work out the kinks at the start of the season.

Don't know about the B1G or Big-12, but BSU's application to the PAC was turned down. And the way I read it, the Big-E came asking BSU, not the other way around. And it was because the decent teams left the Big-E that Boise decided not to join.

If you hand pick 4 ooc games, then you only have to win 2 (out of 8) conference games to be bowl eligible.

It's true the ACC had 11 bowl teams, but most of them lost. The PAC and SEC had more bowl wins.

BTW, Louisville is not a ooc game for FSU. It's still a decent slate, though: 11 AQ teams in 12 games is rare.

Not counting 2011 - which was a good year - Kiffin was 5-5 in the PAC, 0-2 vs ND, and 0-1 in bowl games. Even with sanctions, that's disappointing.

Not bad for UCLA.
Posted Tuesday October 01, 2013, About: Why Del Rio won't ditch Denver in-season
Exactly. All this speculation lacks two things....
1. Validation by USC's AD,
2. Expressed interest by the names being mentioned.

Del Rio, Gruden and Fisher are NFL guys with no interest in going back to school. After the Superbowl, Del Rio will have offers for the NFL. No one needs a coach more than the New Jersey Giants.

Petersen previously turned down an offer from UCLA. Riley has twice previously declined the USC job. Sumlin's dream is probably to get an incentive offer from TAMU to keep him there.

I doubt any of these names make Haden's short list.

It's not like the new Jags coach is making him look bad by turning it around. It's the second season since he left and they're worse now. Maybe the problem with the Jags is in the front office.

Maybe he'll replace Coughlin for a second time.
Posted Tuesday October 01, 2013, About: Why Del Rio won't ditch Denver in-season
Del Rio has been a NFL DC twice (Carolina '02 and Denver '12) and head coach 9 seasons for the Jags. At each stop he vastly improved the defenses. In his second year after replacing Tom Coughlin, he brought the Jags their first winning season in five years. True, his last 3 years were downhill and he deserves the blame for not going after a decent QB, but Del Rio is no slouch and will surely get another chance as a head coach in the NFL. IMO that would be his preference.

I think Trojan alum Mike Holmgren is presently unemployed. He's only 3 years older than Saban and may still have something left in his tank.

Agree, plus whatever his deficiencies at coaching, he's been one of the best recruiters in the game.

H'e one of those guys that makes a terrific first impression, and then it's all downhill after that. That would explain how he dazzles recruits, suckered Al Davis, and got Layla to marry him. The only mystery is why Layla hasn't kicked him to the curb.

Agree. Trojans scored 27 in the 2nd half, which is more than most games and twice what they got in the first half. USC also lost a couple defenders (and Lee) to injury. IMO the scoring got crazy in the 2nd half because the defenses on both sides were gassed, especially USC's with their short bench. Nobody quit, but I'll concede that sounds good to some who never watched.

The kid's life could be a made-for-TV movie. His English may not be great, but he speaks fluent sign. Both his parents were deaf, although they weren't around much. Raised in foster homes as a ward of the state, he has one brother serving time in AZ and another killed in a gang fight. Even with his talents, it's amazing he's avoided the same fate.

Nothing wrong with hope.
Posted Tuesday August 21, 2012, About: Sub-par Sunday scrimmage made Barkley sick
I agree Kiffin's been on his best behavior since leaving Tennessee, and he recruits as well as anyone in the country. But IMO the jury is still out on his coaching ability. He beat Oregon last season, but lost to ASU. He's 1-1 vs ND, losing one that should never have been lost. So far, we have mixed results. And preseason rankings are evidence of exactly nothing.
Posted Tuesday August 21, 2012, About: Sub-par Sunday scrimmage made Barkley sick
Lots can happen in the next 4 years. I doubt he wants another college, but if he's doing well some pro team could make him an offer he can't refuse. Things are going okay with Haden right now, but I wouldn't say those two are kindred spirits. I'm just not taking anything for granted.
Posted Tuesday August 21, 2012, About: Sub-par Sunday scrimmage made Barkley sick
A lot of skill positions leaving after this year. With the scholly handicap, Kiffin won't be able to reload the way Carroll did. Trojans get a shot this year, but 2013-2015 Kiffin will be successful if he can just win the Pac12 South. If he's still around after that....
Posted Tuesday August 07, 2012, About: USC's offense historically explosive?
The lead mentions the big jump in USC's O from '04 to '05. Since the '05 team couldn't get it done, I'd rather have a better balanced team like '04. Don't know how good USC's D is, but for sure the toughest test will come from Leach, Chip Kelly, Sarkisian, Tedford, etc, in conference rather than post season.

IF USC's O can carry them to the final game and IF one SEC team can run the gauntlet, it could be the best O vs the best D balancing each other out. In that case the SEC O vs USC's D could decide the winner. Still too soon to tell...
Posted Thursday August 02, 2012, About: Redd may split carries
If I understand your comment, you're concerned for the Trojans' juju because they may have picked up a selfish player and the coach may go off his meds and start singing Rocky Top.

After careful consideration of your concerns, I've decided I still like USC's chances for 2012 and barring a rash of injuries, the player and coach you referred to should do just fine this year. Thanks, anyway.
Posted Thursday August 02, 2012, About: Redd may split carries
Looked it up and you're right. Last year was USC's worst for recruiting in the last 10. It was still better than Oregon's best year yet. And USC is listed as the #1 reccruiter for 2013, so where are they losing recruits?

You're also right that the Trojans have less CG experience than the Ducks (by 1 game). So if that really matters, then so should bowl game experience. USC has won 24 Rose Bowls, OU just 2. Who's playing catchup?

Kelly has done well with his gimmicky offense, but as defenses get used to it, the up-tempo becomes just another soso idea like the Spread, Shotgun, Power I, and Single Wing before it. Eventually Mr. Knight will grow weary of trying to buy a championship and UDub will again be the power in the Northwest. Good luck back at ya.
