The outrageous deals started with Mike Hampton. Throw Barry Zito into the mix. The fans are really gonna get screwed by escalating price. Baseball players struck years ago. It is time for fans to strike as they are the ones who will have to pay in the form of ever increasing salaries for this insanity. The owners see what happened to these players & yet they are like zombies following these guys around. I expected Santana to break down in the later stages of the contract but not barely 1/2 way thru.
I can imagine Jeter playing shortstop with a walker . He will still demand a multi year contract and big money.
As far as icon status, it did not help Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron or Tom Seaver to name but a few. Lets call it what it is . Jeter does not want to give up his big paycheck anytime soon. All those telling the Yankees to overpay him will be the first to complain about higher ticket and concession prices. The money has to come from somewhere so it is your pocket getting picked again. If you are OK with that great.
I hate to break the news to some people but he is not the second coming of Jesus Christ. If the scooter was still alive I think he would have taken him aside & given him some good advice. To all of those complaining about high ticket prices, remember whatever he gets will translate into higher ticket & concession prices . Think about it.
Methinks he is on drugs or getting bad advice or both. The Yankees may sweeten their offer a little but nowhere near what he wants. The Yankees should look at their options re free agency or minors re a shortstop. Maybe the Mets could shop Reyes to them for a few good prospects. The Mets are going nowhere this year so why not start restocking their depleted farm system.
He will get no more than 2 years anywhere else. If George were alive, he might get what he wants. Somehow he will have to scrape by with 15 million. Maybe he could collect bottles for deposit to make up the shortfall.
The Mets still have Ollie so no reason to sweat right - nudge nudge wink wink
To Wilpon, sell the team to someone who gives a rats ass about winning. Anyone who pays money to see them play should have their head examined.
