What good is a lead-off/number two type who can't hit lefthanded pitching at all?
Posted Thursday September 03, 2009, About: What's wrong with Rivera?
If anything the drop in home runs during the warmer months is counterintuitve since heat makes the ball travel further. After April, the pundits were expecting an explosion of long balls all summer long. It didn't happen, indicating that we are looking at a seasonal phenomenon. As for Damon, most of his homers are into the second deck; they'd be gone anywhere. Meanwhile Swisher can't buy a home run at the stadium, and he's crushing them everywhere else. Nothing is as simple as it seems.

I'd love the bears to take him. the real a---hole in denver is McDaniels.
Posted Saturday August 08, 2009, About: Red Sox open to Smoltz comeback
Penny, Smoltz, Drew, Dice-K, Wakefield, Ortiz, Varitek, Lowell, Baldelli. The 2009 Sox remind me of the Yankees of recent years. Too old, too slow, too beat up. As for Theo, re-signing Varitek, mistake;signing Drew to a huge contract, mistake; signing Lowell for three years, mistake; overpaying for Dice-K the five inning, two year man, mistake. Every shortstop acquisition he has ever made; mistake, signing Penny, mistake (like Wade Miller before him); not giving Manny the contract he wanted at the start of 2008, big mistake; signing Smoltz, big mistake. Theo is great at analyzing prospects, but that's about it.
Posted Sunday June 07, 2009, About: Scout: Ortiz is older than reported
I don't see what difference it makes why Ortiz is so bad all of a sudden. Thanks to Manny, we already know the Red Sox championships were no more taint free than the Angels in 2002 or the Yankees in 1999-2000. So maybe he took PEDs, maybe he didn't. We'll most likely never be told. Maybe he's too old; maybe he's too fat; maybe he's too myopic. Maybe, maybe, maybe. Ortiz is now the worst DH in baseball. That's all we know for sure, and all we need to know.

ortiz has never had a very good year without Manny backing him up. And now he never will.
Posted Tuesday January 06, 2009, About: Pettitte rejects Yankees' one-year offer
Let's see. Pettite is old and injury prone at this point. Kind of makes him the worst of all possible options. Make an offer to Lowe, whose old but healthy and a real innings eater, or make an offer to Sheets, whose injury prone but younger and dominant when he is healthy.

The night stalker is a complete moron. Bonds cheated. What Ruth drank, who he did etc. was completely irrelevant to his greatness on the field. Who died and left this wing not the morality police.
Posted Friday August 01, 2008, About: Red Sox fleeced in Manny deal?
If you don't see that the Rays, Blue Jays, and Yankees have better pitching than the Reds, Cardinals and Brewers (pre-Sabathia), then you haven't been watching very closely.
Posted Friday August 01, 2008, About: Red Sox fleeced in Manny deal?
Major league sciouts have a category known as National league pitcher. With the DH, lots of guys who can get by in the NL get creamed in the AL. All of this is to say that in addition to the huge discrepancy in RISP batting average between Bay and Manny, there is also a sgnicant discrepancy in the quality of the pitching they have faced. Bay is going to long for the days when he could hit 216 in Pittsburgh, because it's going to be a whole lot tougher in the AL.
Posted Friday August 01, 2008, About: Red Sox fleeced in Manny deal?
Jason Bay has a 216 batting average with men on base, roughly 100 points lower than "Bad" Manny's. They now have noone to protect Ortiz, and in July J.D. Drew proved how much easier it is to hit in front of Manny than anywhere else in the Sox line-up. Now teams will be putting Big (Fat) Papi on to clog the bases without fear of the home run ball coming back to bite them. Oh yeah, the Sox got fleeced. Or rather they fleeced themselves. They should have just announced they wetre picking up Manny's option back in May.

Posted Tuesday January 29, 2008, About: Mets, Twins agree on Santana trade
This is the deal everyone wanted. The ?Twins wanted him out of the AL. The Sox and Yanks didn't want the other one to get him, but didn't want to pay the price of acquisition themselves. and the Mets wanted Santana.

Nobody wants Coco Crisp! Major chip, please.
Posted Thursday November 01, 2007, About: A-Rod's big ego doesn't worry Angels
The Angels don't need to be worrying about Arod's ego. They need to be worrying about his gag reflex. In his last 57 ABS in the postseason, he has had 38 men on base and exactly 0 them reached home. That's 2 less than Dice-K Matsusaka, who had never gotten a hit in the major leagues before game 3 of the series.
Posted Wednesday October 31, 2007, About: Mets targeting Yankees' Posada
Posada will not go to the Mets for a number of reasons, the most important of which is there is no DH in the National league. As Posada ages, and he is already 36, he will need to spell himself more and more with DH stints (he did that over 20 times last season). An older catcher with a big bat is always better off in the American League.

Posted Thursday August 30, 2007, About: Back sidelines Manny indefinitely
My bad. It's 28 games. And I wouldn't go counting your chickens against Halladay or Marcum of Toronto, Shields or Kazmir of Tampa Bay, Bedard or Guthrie of Baltimore. Haren or Blanton of Oakland. Without Manny, you can't score runs against good pitching. Put Ortiz on, maybe Lowell or Youk will get a hit. But in the end you need Drew, Crisp, Kielty or Hinske to drive them in, and not one of them is hitting 270. Nah, you could easily lose 9 of those 21games, plus another 3 to the Yankees, plus another 2 to Minnesota. That would put you at 500 for the reat of the season, which is about where you been since late May. It might be enough. Then again, it might not.
Posted Thursday August 30, 2007, About: Yankee unhappy about demotion
Mussina should be too ashamed of the way he's been pitching to be angry that they won't let him do it anymore. And he was never a class guy. He always pouted when errors were made, he always took subtle digs at his teammates when he lost close games. He always whined about the strike zone. the best thing about the last three blow-ups is that he has run out of excuses. Now he needs to sit down, shut his pie hole, and hope they can get him the ring he's never been sable to win on his own. Bring on the young talent!
Posted Thursday August 30, 2007, About: Back sidelines Manny indefinitely
The lead's down to 5 with 25 to play: no problem.

No Manny for the next 10-15 games: no problem.

Put the two together: you've got problems.
Posted Friday August 24, 2007, About: Gagne: No injury, no regrets
Oh in fact Lester is sooo much better than Gabbard that Francona decided to send him back to the minors. Meanwhile Gabbard is 2-0 for a bad team and 6-1 overall.
