Having a terrible team around him probably didn't help matters. Heck, he set a record for most Leaf wins in a season by a goaltender despite having that terrible team. If he had been crappier earlier, the Leafs might've had Stamkos or Doughty.

Not sure if that's worse than the fact many Leaf fans (and media types) thought Pogge was going to be better than Rask.

It doesn't compare to the Euros or WC, although some South American countries have been building great squads in the past few years (Chile, Colombia, Uruguay in particular) in addition to the usual duopoly down there.

It amazes me how much that one award 30+ years ago bugs literally everybody I know who was around at the time. Trying to find an equivalent in the past ten years or so and there just isn't a comparable winner, unless you find the recent Norris winners who have won only because of their scoring prowess to be unworthy but there is nowhere near a consensus on that one. Maybe Theodore's Hart...

Copa America. South American (CONMEBOL) continental tournament. Held every 4 years, next one is next summer. It's a decent tournament, but you can usually count on Brazil dominating it.

I'm neutral (I saw far more of Lidstrom than I did of Bourque given my age) but I do know that Detroit had certain advantages that Boston didn't. A lot of Boston's forwards, Neely Poulin and Carpenter in particular, of the era had a very limited shelf life at the peak of their game while Detroit's remained relatively healthy throughout. Also, no Milbury at the Joe, and Detroit certainly didn't have any dynasty remotely as dominant as the Oilers competing with them when they got to the Finals.

Bourque was a lot like Karl Malone and John Stockton and Patrick Ewing and Reggie Miller in basketball, in that it was just unfortunate they were born around the same time Jordan was. Except, unlike all those guys, Bourque did eventually win a Cup.

Third behind Suter and Karlsson.

He's still one of the better d-men out there. He managed a -6 on one of the worst teams in the league. I kept hoping the Leafs would deal for him rather than re-sign Celine.

Sunday's Liverpool-City match was the best of the year, and one of the most emotional games i've ever seen with the Hillsborough anniversary. Although that is definitely more the exception than the rule.

You'd think so, but soccer writers are just terrible. It's like the worst the Sun/Globe hockey scribes have to offer times a thousand.

Huberdeau, Barkov, Kulikov, Campbell, Gudbranson, Pirri...

They need some veterans up front and the kids still need to develop, but the team is on the right track.

More English soccer coverage, I'm guessing?

If they take Ekblad here, they are going to be one scary team in 2015-16.

I would still be shocked if Chicago doesn't take it.
Posted Wednesday April 16, 2014, About: Sens shopping their captain
Ottawa lost their captain and 20 years of NHL experience last summer, and it showed. Now they want to trade their new captain and 12 years of NHL experience and leave an already green team even greener?

Since we're on the subject, Bobby Mac was on TSN Radio last night and he said that the Flames could've had Gustavo and Tatar AND a first round pick for Bouwmeester, but they turned it down and took St. Louis' deal instead. Sorry, HC.
