Posted Sunday January 06, 2013, About: Adrian Peterson aiming for 2,500 yards in 2013
He should buy rookie tackle Kalil a new car, a new house, and anew yacht. Without the holes opened for him he would be looking at 900 yards and more knee surgery.
Posted Sunday January 06, 2013, About: Browns reportedly out of Chip Kelly chase
Where did you hear that? Sounds like talk radio, but it doesn't sound like Chip Kelly. Oregon's defense has to stay on the field a lot due to the speed with which their offense scores. It is obvious he cares greatly about defense.
Posted Friday January 04, 2013, About: Oregon AD will try to keep Kelly
I think you nailed the problem on the head. We hear of lots of pro players who have to be dragged out of the weight room, but not too many who have to be dragged off the cross country running course. 18 year old wanna-be millionaires will do anything for a chance, even run if they have to; 30 year-olds who are already millionaires aren't going to.

I suspect most teams know that, though, and are interested in Kelly because he dreamed up a different way to win at the college level, so they hope he can dream up another plan for the pro level.
Posted Thursday January 03, 2013, About: Baseball's worst Hall of Famer
I hear what you are saying Moose. The Veteran's committee has taken a lot of flack for choosing Maz, but remember, they chose him because they believed he was the best fielding 2nd baseman ever to play the game. That opinion may be wrong, and may even be indicative of the good ol' boy mentality of the committee, but it isn't ridiculous to include a player in the HOF based on being the best defender ever.

Baseballhas refused to keep meaningful defensive stats; in fact, it is still really people outside MLB who produce the meaningful defensive analyses. At the time the Veteran's Committee chose Maz, all they had to work with was subjective opinions of defensive skill and fading memories of players past.
Posted Saturday December 29, 2012, About: New Browns regime not sold on Brandon Weeden
Weedon is a Holmgren pick. He could walk on water and turn water into wine, and it wouldn't be enough to impress the new ownership. So what if firing everyone and starting over sets the franchise back 3 or 4 years? The owners will get the TV money during those 3 or 4 years, so they don't care. They figure the peasants will be that much more grateful when they finally put a competitive team on the field.

Posted Saturday December 29, 2012, About: Rex Ryan denies reports about his future with the Jets
Any halfway intelligent wombat would have fired Rex a couple of years ago. But he is still here. And the whole dialogue this year has centered on which QB is worse, Sanchez or Tebow, and is it really Sparano's fault they suck so bad...Rex has done a nice job of covering his tracks.

He should be fired, but then he should have been fired long ago. I think it is an IQ test for Woody--can he see through the smoke screen? I'm betting he is too dumb, and Rex gets another year.
Posted Saturday December 29, 2012, About: Smoak stokes O's hot stove fire
Smoak has been a flop so far with the M's, so he might be available cheap (especially after the addition of Morales), and he might yet pan out big time. Low risk, high reward. I think the M's will keep him one more year--it seems like he starts to hit, then something happens--personal tragedy, injury, whatever. Might give it one more year before declaring him snakebit and moving on.

Or maybe they trade him for Justin Upton, straight up. Up and down play, mostly down, for steady average play. "But look at the upside!"
Posted Thursday December 27, 2012, About: Cowboys playoff chase a mirage
I don't see the "mirage" factor. They are in the hunt because if they win their next game they are in the playoffs--that isn't a mirage, it's a contest. They might lose, but there isn't any "mirage" about it.
Posted Thursday December 27, 2012, About: Should Steelers give Week 17 playing time to backups?
The Steelers should be able to win with Batch; he's a better back-up than any of the Brown's back-ups. And I think you are right that BR isn't healthy yet.
Posted Thursday December 27, 2012, About: Ray Edwards expected to sign with Seahawks this week
They want him for his brain? That doesn't seem too likely. The conversation might go like this:

PC: What can you tell me about the Falcon defense?
Edwards: Nothin'--that's why they fired me.
PC: Ok, well consider yourself fired again.
Posted Thursday December 27, 2012, About: Merril Hodge: Tim Tebow is "as phony as a $3 bill"
The phrase is actually "**** as a two dollar bill," and dates from the days before "****" was slang for homosexual, and when two dollar bills were the counterfeiters favorite bill. Today the equivalent would have to be "phony as a fifty dollar bill," since $50's are the current favorite among counterfeiters. (It was the $20 for most of the last half-century, but in the last decade has switched to the $50 because $20's aren't worth enough any more.)

Anyway, Hodge doesn't know what he is talking about.
Posted Thursday December 27, 2012, About: Beanie Wells "auditioning for 31 other teams" on Sunday
Binkie Wells?
Posted Thursday December 27, 2012, About: NFL releases cap, franchise tag values
Nice to see OL creeping up in value; they have been under-appreciated for a while. TE seems to be under-rated, but that may change when Gronk signs a contract.
Posted Thursday December 27, 2012, About: Red Sox name a new closer
Hanrahan is more of a strike-out/walk style pitcher than Melancon, which means he may play better in Fenway. Melancon pitches to contact more; he may do better in Pittsburgh than he did in Fenway. Melancon has a career 2.85 ERA in the NL compared to Hanrahan's 3.74 and is 27 rather than 31. So Pittsburgh got younger and cheaper, while Boston got older and more expensive, but Boston has money to burn while Pittsburgh doesn't. Seems like a reasonable trade.
Posted Wednesday December 26, 2012, About: Biggest storyline of 2013
ESPN is a bit off the mark here, The 2013 Dodgers goal is to sign a good TV contract with Fox, to provide the funds for the next decade. They have made a good start on that.

They also need a nucleus of good players to carry them through the next 4 or 5 years, while they rebuild the farm system; they have done a good job with that, too.

Their spending is a bit of an eye-opener with regard to how much money the McCourts were pulling out of the franchise. I suspect they are spending part of the owners share as well as the players share, but still, it is a huge budget.
Posted Tuesday December 25, 2012, About: Are the Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl contenders?
Seattle will be playing without it's top two cornerbacks (Browning and Sherman--out with PED suspensions) and will be on the road throughout the playoffs--they are much better at home. I have been pleasantly surprised by this team this year, but they can't be considered favorites under these circumstances.
Posted Tuesday December 25, 2012, About: David DeJesus on the move in Chicago?
I don't think the M's are in the market for an aging left-handed hitting OF with no power and a mediocre OBP. Saunders and Carp both need playing time; after a slow start Saunders had 19 HR. Carp's 2012 season was ruined by injuries, but the in 2011 he hit 276 with 12 HR in half a season. These guys need to play more, and there are more lined up behind them in the minors.

Maybe the Braves would give something for him? He could be a cheap version on Michael Bourne, with fewer strikeouts.
Posted Tuesday December 25, 2012, About: Why Smyly deserves Porcello's would-be spot
Yeah, nice position to be in. They can ask for offers, and consider carefully, knowing it would not be a bad thing at all to go into the season with an extra starter.
Posted Sunday December 23, 2012, About: Why Mariners GM desperately wanted Kendrys Morales
I don't get the Ibanez signing at all. It will be his third time with the team, and the fans like him and all, but about the only role for him is pinch hitting. Maybe they think Jaso's big season was a fluke? Or that minor leaguer Zunio will be ready to catch this season, making Jaso good trade bait?
