Cards are apparently highly interested in Greinke.
Trading him inter-division might drive up the price. Cards have a deep system too. If they could get Shelby Miller and say Oscar Taveras, or maybe if that price is too high, Matt Adams and Shelby Miller, the Brewers would make out like kings.
Still might be able to trade him to a team at a discount that is willing to take a risk. Maybe they can get a PTBNL, pending how long it takes for him to return.
But a team that is gonna make the playoffs and doesn't need to worry about making it, like the Yankees, might take a chance on him.
Cain got 6-years $127.5 million. Greinke on the open market, as the only number one pitcher on the market now with Hamels locked up, will demand at least that.
Plus if the reports of the Dodgers willing to throw money down the toilet for a starter this off-season are true, the Dodgers might offer him a Hamel's like 6-year $144 million deal. Besides, I'd take Greinke over Hamel's anyways.
Greinke will have a lot of suitors with a lot of money.
Greinke is gonna command way more than a hundred million.
He might fetch a decent prospect back. He wont net a draft pick under the new CBA, cause they wont offer him a qualifying offer of $12+ million, so they should trade him. Wont get a Lawrie type prospect that they paid, but maid a decent high risk prospect.
"I still believe there's a chance that Greinke returns to Milwaukee after testing the FA waters"
I don't know what makes you believe that. But either way, this season is lost and he is gonna test free agency. He wont resign before free agency, so trade him. Then in the off-season, try to sign him again. This way, you get the prospects to rebuild the system, and have a chance to keep him or rather bring him back.
If you don't trade Greinke, you get low first round draft picks. Those are often a crap shoot. If they trade him, they will get at least one high end prospect that will have a better chance at one day being a big leaguer, like a Zach Wheeler, plus probably some lower end prospects that can be a crap shoot, but still be a better shot at making it then the draft pick.

Baseball managers are overrated. All they really have to do is set the lineup, which usually doesn't change all that much day-to-day, and manage the bullpen. The bullpen is the toughest part of the job.

Zach Wheeler is much better, in both terms of a higher ceiling and lower risk, than a draft pick in the 16-40 range.
Greinke should demand a package like Zach Wheeler plus some lower prospects.

Trade him.
Trade him.
I also think Bradford should crack the top 15.
