Posted Friday November 23, 2012, About: Philly ready to act soon on top priority
Seems to me that Upton is the play in Philly. I can't see going after Bourne who is only a year younger than Victorino (who I would have rather kept over Bourne). So that would give us Mayberry (LF), Upton (CF), and Brown (RF). Not bad except that Charlie has had reservations about Mayberry and believes Brown needs seasoning... Not a bad outfield so long as they can hit.

@daqweeed... that is like Jimmy. He has bouts of this every year. Yeah, he is frustrated but lack of hustle, given what he is paid, is Charlie's golden rule.
Posted Monday July 02, 2012, About: Phillies put Hamels on the block
I think Hamels will go to the Dodgers but it will require some serious firepower to make it happen -- perhaps a three way deal with another team (Seattle). Victorino will be next, perhaps to the Reds (they have a stud short-stop in their farm system). These moves would replenish the farm system and give the Phils some kind of future.
Posted Tuesday January 31, 2012, About: Phillies scrambling for a cleanup hitter
Fearful that the best days of the Phils are behind them. Would like to see Mayberry or Brown (come around) and play left -- which would take care of the outfield for a while. Bigger worries at the corners... Planco is great but on the downside too.
Posted Tuesday January 17, 2012, About: Arbitration process set to heat up for Phils
Valdez played well for Rollins when he was hurt. He played well for Utley when he was out last year. He played better than planco at third base for a good number of games. I don't think that versatility comes around very often.
Posted Sunday September 18, 2011, About: Did Cubs miss out on Sandberg?
Charlie will get the Phillies win record (he needs three more to take it over from Gene Mauch). Two more years.... I can see one more but then the Phils nucleus is getting in the mid-thirties. Play should diminish and then major changes. I don't think he is going to want to be there for that second year. I can see one more then Ryno in as mgr.
Posted Tuesday August 09, 2011, About: Yes, the Dodgers are talking playoffs
It sounds like they have been garbling with suntan lotion. Come back to reality Don... the Dodgers aren't going anywhere.
Posted Wednesday July 20, 2011, About: Phillies, Sox chasing Beltran; price going up
Kind of on the fence with this one. Would like to see Beltran as a Phillie. Don't want to give up Brown. Two years from now we will be rebuilding and will need him.
Posted Monday June 27, 2011, About: Rays would love move to NL
Isn't the real issue here that the Rays can't compete with the Sox or the Yanks? Wasn't that long ago (3 months) when the press and the blog groups were deeming the Yankees way over aged and unable to compete. At some point that will be true and the Rays would have been positioned for a strong run against the sox -- basically a two horse race in the AL east.

The problem as I see it is that the Rays could not keep their infrastructure together, losing most of their talent in the off season. Sounds like a front office issue which WONT be addressed by realignment. This issue will follow them whereever they play.
Posted Sunday June 26, 2011, About: Rays would love move to NL
Ok...lets look at this statement. Over the past fifteen years the answer is yes -- but in the last 4 they have been fairly even
1. Each league has two WS victories each
2. All star games wise, the AL wins 3-1 in the last 4 years
3. In inter-league play, the NL has gained tremendous ground on the AL in that same timeframe, jumping by 15 games as of 2010 (up from 2008). Yes the AL still has the majority of victories overall.

I suspect that one more year of these trends and the NL will be at least at parity to the AL if not superior in most. Just food for thought.
Posted Friday May 27, 2011, About: Werth hiding issue with manager in plain sight?
I am on board with your comment about turds. The Nats could have had a bright future but, losing Dunn and Morgan in the off season really set them back. They kind of remind me of the early 70s Phillies -- a great pitcher who pitches with several bright spots in the lineup (think Carlton with a rookie Schmidt, Bowa and Maddox). In their case they have Strasburg... err, on second thought, they should don't have much beyond Nix and an aging Werth.
Posted Friday May 27, 2011, About: Werth hiding issue with manager in plain sight?
Dude... Lighten up. He went for the money. Who wouldn't have? These guys have only so many years to make it then they are working stiffs like the rest of us. What did you expect him to say after signing the deal...

Now that is funny!
Posted Wednesday April 06, 2011, About: Utley not close to running, or jogging
Rehab until he is 100% and position for a trade. At 32 years old, his prime time is behind him. Start with Ibanez (now) and then work on the infield for next year. With any luck, pieces can be changed out over a couple years and the Phillies can navigate to the next generation.
Posted Wednesday April 06, 2011, About: Jeter ditches famous swing changes
"Jeter's first 14 at bats are worthy of serious scrutiny". Really??? Seriously???
4 games worth of at-bats does not a season (or in this case, a career) make. Whoever reported this is ridiculous. Give him a couple of months -- perhaps til allstar break before you stick a fork in him and call him done. He sure as heck has earned that right!
Posted Sunday March 27, 2011, About: Mets losses may top $100M over two seasons
Seems to me that Indianapolis, Nashville, Salt Lake, Carolina (pick a city), or even New Orleans would be top for a relocation. Big fan base for NFL teams -- certainly could support a MLB team. San Antonio would be another but I think it is too close to Dallas and Houston to support them properly (and yes, I already know what you are going to say about their support of an NBA team). Here is a map plotting out the MLB teams: www.allstays.com/Special/sports-mlb-map.htm
Posted Sunday March 20, 2011, About: Eagles: Teams are calling about Kolb
They have been saying this about Vick since he was a rookie. The truth is, no one has figured out how to defend against him.
Posted Sunday March 20, 2011, About: Phillies eyeing Rangers' Young?
Hopefully the Phils can cobble together something until Utley gets back. After this season, hello revamp. With any luck Ruben can address left field NOW either trading or releasing Ibanez (please let them pick up Damon Young from the Twins).

The Phillies opportunity is closing...they will need to address a complete revamp of the infield in the next two years, picking up a bunch of prospects for these aging superstars.
Posted Tuesday February 15, 2011, About: Joba no lock for Yankees roster
I expect to see this guy dealt to a National League team -- the last thing the Yankees will want to do is have this guy flourish with another team in the American, biting them in the **** later on. St. Louis would be the best place for him under Dave Duncan -- a pitching coach who "has a reputation for taking on reclamation projects, spinning wayward veterans and lost talents into successful starters and relievers" (so says Derrick Goold from STLToday.com). If the Yanks don't care about dealing within the AL, the Rangers are the best fit coach wise under Mike Maddux.

At 25 years old, he still has plenty in the tank. Lets hope that whichever coach gets him can work the demons out of his head and get him on the right track. He was dynamite in a bottle in 2007.
Posted Thursday February 10, 2011, About: Brown's swing fixed, drama-free spring to follow?
Funny...perhaps but not likely. The Giants were lightning in a bottle last year. Unfortunately for you, they will be lucky to win the West let alone another series. If Michael Young gets picked up by the Rockies -- it is one and done for the Giants.
