Canadian Hockey fans just don't get it. They will NEVER get the advertising $ needed to be a top league without the American dollar, even in its current declining value state. Also, not to pick on Northern American cities, but the Detroit's and Buffalo's, who have supported hockey, are struggling towns with declining population. Those people are moving south, to Phoenix, Dallas, the NC research triangle, Nashville, and Atlanta. Bettman may have been a few years too early with his move south mission, but he's going where the money is headed. He was just proactive.

Posted Wednesday June 06, 2007, About: NHL to block southern Ontario move
Moving Nashville does nothing to help the NHL. Bettman already has the captive audience of the Southern Ontario market with the Sabres and the Maple Leafs. Lets face it, that league is a money loser without the American revenue and putting a team in Kitchener or Hamilton won't help that one bit. Its a fact that Nashville has more individual season ticket holders than it does corporate, which makes it a unique situation. Bettman may have been a little hasty in moving the NHL southward, but that is where the population is moving to. Areas like Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, the Carolinas, and Arizona are growing like crazy and will probably be in a better situation to support these hockey teams 10-15 years down the road than even a Pittsburgh or Detroit will.

This still doesn't solve the NHL's problem. Moving Nashville just takes whatever interest Americans have in hockey away from one more growing, good weather, American city. Those people in Southern Ontario are already a captive hockey audience and this potential move does nothing to add to their market share. That sport is doomed financially if they decide to concentrate more teams in Canada. There was a reason Quebec and Winnipeg moved. Bettman had the right idea to move into the Sun Belt, he was probably just about ten years early doing it. Plus, with that said, there are 4 to 5 American teams that I would move before Nashville, Phoenix and Florida being chief among the list.
