One thing for people to consider is that other positive results may have been overturned on appeal. The policy is only to announce positive results after an appeal has been denied. In this case the original result was leaked, so the appeal process was public, but that's not the norm.
Excellent work, Grue! I appreciate the work you put in to writing this.
Some Police trivia, for those who enjoy such things: * Before making it in a band, Sting was a high school English teacher. Don't Stand So close To Me is semi-autobiographical.
* Back in the 1970s, rugby shirts were considered fashion-forward. Gordon Sumner used to wear a yellow and black striped one, and looked like a bee. Someone called him Sting, and it stuck.
* I had a chance to see the Police during their Regatta de Blanc tour, when they were still under the radar, with just the quirky Roxanne on the radio. They were playing at a dive bar for something like a $5 cover.
But I was hot for this girl at the time, and she was into disco. So I put on my leisure suit, kidded myself that I looked pretty smooth, and took her to the local disco instead. I hated the crowd, the Saturday Night Fever-esque dance floor, and the fruity drinks made in a blender. She turned out to be built of unobtanium and I think she spent most of the night dancing with some other guy. Monday morning at school, my friends told me about the amazing concert I'd missed and I beat myself up over wasting time on a girl who wasn't my type anyway.
After reading the blog, I'm seeing the irony of missing out hearing the Police and living one of their songs instead.
Stanford beat up on Washington's defense on the ground, but the pass defense did fairly well against Luck--receivers were generally well-covered and I don't think Foles can routinely make the throws into coverage that Luck can.
Since Arizona doesn't have 'hand off' in their playbook, defending against Foles passing is all Washington needs to do to win. I agree that Zona is better than their record, but I think they still lose this game.
Always an excellent read, Grue! "Big Red Combine" is a great phrase.
You were absolutely dead-on with your SCDGLPBCLotW. In hindsight, looks like you should have gone all-in and predicted an outright win for the Red Raiders.
Excellent blog, Orac! Good analysis and well-written. If I didn't know better, I'd think you are a USC grad :)
I'm in line with all your picks, except Clemson; I think they've been playing over their heads lately and it's time for the Tigers to regress to the mean.
Losing Skov for the season is a huge blow for the Cardinal. I really hated to see that, and I'll be interested to find out how much they miss him this first week.
I'm hoping USC can hang half-a-hundred on Arizona, but I'm not sure they have the offensive firepower. I do expect a win though.
Excellent blog, RudeDog. Not too tough a slate for the Big10 this week--things will get much more interesting when conference play starts.
I think SDSU will give Michigan a run for their money and may very well pull of the upset.
Like everyone else, I want to see how Miller handles the starting QB role as a freshman. Pryor stepped up pretty well when he took over the reins from Boeckman; hopefully Miller can do the same. Just a few months ago the kid was 3rd on the depth chart and not likely to see much more than mop up duties. Talk about frying pan to fire.
Glad to see Dwight getting his due, UH. I still like Buck's original version better though. The accordion is a nice touch, but the drums on Yoakam's version seem to be running away from the rest of the band.
Here's my favorite Dwight Yoakam song (yeah, I love me some honky tonk)
Impressive choices, Dfan. Have you considered creating an FM radio station devoted to playing hidden gems like these all day, every day?
Maybe you could have two guys crack jokes on the air during the morning commute, then play one of these songs, do a prank call on some unsuspecting listener, then play another of these songs.
I know it's a bit out there, but I think it might prove popular.
